Pro Sport Greatness... Take your Pick

If you could be the best ever in one sport, what sport would you pick and why?

As for me, it would be baseball... Pitcher to be exact, since it was a dream of mine since I was a kid. Even though it's not as popular as it once was, great baseball players are still legendary in America, although they don't have the global impact of a soccer player.

I would love to be the best QB in the NFL, I'd play for the Panthers and finally have them win the Super Bowl.

Hockey. With out question. I'm hoping this influx of amazing young players, headed by Crosby, will bring in new fans and a skill level that hasn't been seen since the 60's and 70's

When I was little, it was always a question of NFL safety, or NBA guard.

Neither panned out. :p

Hockey, definitely. Of course this would require me to be able to skate first....

No they wouldn't. You'd always be compared to him, no matter how good you became.
At the start of your career you'd be called, "the next Wayne Gretsky" (or perhaps even more condescending, "Wayne Gretsky jnr").
Later on you'd get given the title, "The Wayne Gretsky of the 21st Century".
Then of course there'd be the endless (and needless) comparisons between you and him. Comparing ages/games to hit certain hockey milestones, who's the best between you and him, who would win, etc etc etc.
At the end of your career you'd prob end up with the label, "The only man who beat Wayne Gretsky's records".

Just becoming better than them doesn't mean the public/media/fans will forget them.

As for me, I'd go for rowing. Beat Steve Redgrave's record (5 golds in 5 Olympics). Either that or decathlon, cause it's so hardcore.

If you beat them at their national sport, they'll prob hand you over to their women's swim team or weightlifting squad to get spanked:

I'd be the best race car driver ever. There'd be legends about my exploits. And hundreds (if not thousands) would find out they're not as great as me, just before they hit that tree. ;)

I'd have to pick baseball. When I was a kid (about 12), I was an outfielder with a decent arm, and I was pretty good with a bat too. I'd love to be an outfielder (even just a utility outfielder) for the Yankees.

Other, golf.

Not for fame or fortune, or for any transient satisfaction that would come of winning more often (the handicapping system works well enough for that anyway), but because I am, frankly, rubbish at it.

I've been rubbish at it since the first time I played, almost 30 years ago, and I remain rubbish now. I still enjoy it though and that, they tell me, is all that matters :p

No longer can anyone tell me that the Chinese are opponents o human equality! I mean look, in the Unites States someone with down's syndrome would be relegated to "The Special Olympics" and be running half laps on a half rate race track to the amusement of others... the Chinese allow them the oppurtunity to lift weights in the actual Olympic Games!

Note: Yes I realize that they don't actually have Down's Syndrome... but they certainly look like it!

Probably soccer. Firstly I'd make at least equal best amounts of money of any sport, and secondly I'd be able to retire without any of the injury problems you'd end up with from the NFL etc.

I'd go with Football, because you get paid millions for kicking a little ball around a small area of grass. i don't understand the whole oh it's great to support big teams who don't give a flying...pig about you.
but it is fun to play.
what about rock-climbing? or sky-diving?

I was a WR on the my HS Football team. I also have met Jerry Rice(very cool guy) and realize what a legend the guy is. So to be the best WR in Football would have been my sports dream.

nah, they go more for Pressure points. after all, you break a man's legs, then you'll have to carry him away.

you temporarly shock a nerve cluster, then he can walk himself to jail.

and Bone Breaking Massages? I'd rather a nice deep tissue massage from a nice Asian girl. ;)
