Twins separated at birth marry each other WITHOUT knowing they are brother and sister

The siblings had no idea they were related
Twins separated at birth have married each other without realising they were brother and sister, it has been revealed.

The British couple have now been granted an annulment after a special High Court hearing. Judges ruled the marriage had never validly existed.

Full details of how the brother and sister fell in love and married have been kept secret, along with their identities.

But the Evening Standard has learned that they were separated soon after birth.

Each was then adopted by different families but neither was told they had a twin.

The couple had no idea they were blood relatives until after their wedding.

The case was heard recently in the High Court's Family Division.

Experts warn that it highlights the need for the rights of children to know the identity of their parents to be strengthened.

Professor Lord Alton, who uncovered the case, said new reforms drawn up by ministers threatened to undermine existing rights

The changes, now being debated in the House of Lords, would also relax rules on who can have fertility treatment.

Critics say they will weaken further the link between children and their biological parents - and even effectively end the need for fathers.

Lord Alton said: "The right for children to know the identity of their biological parents is a human right.

"There will be more cases like this if children are not given access to the truth. The needs of the child must always be paramount."

The Government has been facing fierce opposition over sweeping changes to fertility laws in the Human Embryology and Tissues Bill.

Under the proposed law, fertility clinics will not be able to bar single women and same sex couples from treatment.

Instead, doctors must ensure that patients can offer "supportive parenting".

Ministers have already been forced to rewrite the bill following objections by peers to the original wording.

It had stated that children born through fertility treatment needed a "social network", not a father and mother.

The Lords will vote on the revised bill on Tuesday.

Those pushing for the role of fathers to be recognised as vital include Baroness Ruth Deech, a former head of the Government's fertility watchdog, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).

However fertility treatment pioneer Lord Winston said that the call for a such a "father clause" would discriminate against career women.

He said: "This is prejudiced against women who have paid their taxes, been well educated and delayed motherhood because they are working hard.

"If they are left without a partner and still want a baby [with a donor], this would prejudice their treatment and ask doctors to make a value judgment about them."

Lawyer Natalie Gamble, an expert on fertility regulations, said: "Equality rules mean clinics have to give treatment to single women and same sex couples anyway. The Government doesn't need to enshrine this in new laws."

Annulments are usually heard at county court, but can go to the High Court if cases are particularly complex.

Marriages can be annulled if one of the parties was under 16 at the time of the wedding, if it was a bigamous union, or if the couple are closely related.

The latest figures, for 2005, show 251 marriages were annulled that year.

There is no breakdown of how many cases fell into each category.

Just imagine, you wake up unknowing next to your wife/hubby, have a morning quickie and later that day you find out its your brother/sister

Surprise incest,... a person's horror is another's fetish.

Agreed though on the right to know "who's your daddy"; it's better than the therapy bills of the twins.

Geez, I wonder how they feel... the shock, the horror,... the kinkiness.

They probably won't for a while. The icky feeling might compensate though.

What I wonder is what they will do now. Divorce and stay friends ? What do you tell the neighbours ?

I thought the article said that the courts annulled it because it never had legal validity?

God, can you imagine, everyone whoo was at your wedding, all your friends and coworkers. They will find out about you leaving the other. And then you have to explain your wife/hubby is now your sister/brother....

Id pass through a solid concrete floor out of shame probably ;)

I think once they're married you do everything you can to keep them from finding out. Unless there's a trait for some genetic disorder like cystic fibrosis or something, incestuous unions aren't any more unhealthy than any other. The taboo is mostly a social one, and if they weren't raised together and don't know they are related then the taboo is irrelevant. But finding out you've been having sex with your sister... Ugh!

Of course, if they're just starting to flirt and you know better, please pipe up.

If a couple in Kentucky get an annulment, are they still cousins?

This is so sad. I really do hope they can put this behind them and start a romantic relationship once again.

As far as I am concerned, they obviously loved each other, and I really don't see how they can ever just casually shrug off those feelings, and turn their relationship into a purely platonic one.

I say that biology shouldn't really be considered as important a factor when defining a "wrong" incestous relationship, as the emotional relationship between the two persons preceding the romantic relations.

For instance, in this case, neither were or could possibly be aware of being brother and sister before being married etc. Thier relationship was never a sibling-sibling type. In that regard, all that connects them as brother and sister is that they came out of the same womb. Incestous? Biologically, yes. Emotionally, no.

I don't consider thier relationship as truly incestous and wrong unless the sibling-sibling relationship was there before, as this is what truly defines a person as a brother or a sister.

My question is, if they fell in love without knowing, how do they shake those feelings?

I don't think they do, and nor should they have to.

Forgive me, but the romantic affiliation came first and was strong enough to act on with a marriage, right? Now, suddenly, because of an arbitrary revelation about genetics, they can't be in love anymore? I mean sure, legally, they can't be married, but if all you've ever known your lover as is your lover, what's the problem? Sure, genetics would make procreation dicey, but that's why adoption exists (plenty of babies out there, unwanted and unloved, wouldn't care a fig about the genetic compatibility of two loving parents).

So revoke the marriage license and annul the marriage, fine. But why shred a union that was built of over time with trust, honesty, love...just because something neither of them knew suddenly crops up? Seems kinda stupid to me.

Exactly -- nature vs. nurture. By nature, they were born twins, but by nurture -- upbringing -- they were total strangers. They fell in love, and as the old saying goes, that conquers all. Okay, I'm not that much of a sap, but still.

Apparently this is untrue:

Assuming your brain is still functioning like the well-oiled piece of precision engineering it is, your response would, I trust, be: "That's a wind-up if ever I heard one. Think about it for a minute - you mean these two meet by accident, discover not only that they were both adopted but were born on exactly the same day in exactly the same town, and still never pause to wonder whether they might be related? Pull the other one. What did it say on their birth certificates?"

Here's the thing: it all came from a single remark more than a month ago by the vehemently anti-abortion Roman Catholic peer and father of four, Lord Alton, in favour of all children having the right to know the identity of their biological parents.

Although...

Still, stranger things have happened.

As in she's going out with some guy (who suffers from bipolar disorder probably due to being stabbed in the back defending some other guy while drunk, and often takes various drugs, hence my disliking of them), he's a nasty man too does photography (the dodgy sort), she's taken in by his lies, she suffered from manic depression (probably due to her boyfriend isolating her from familiy and friends), now she works as a carer i think. She first started going out with him ohh 4 years ago.

That's really just a caricature of the story, but it's the main parts. Yeah it's not pretty.
