Most are forgettable at best, painful at worst. But every now and then, there are those covers of classic songs that somehow manage to live up to (or even surpass) the original.
What are some of your favorites? Least favorites? If possible, include a sample and original artist.
Personal favorites:
Quietdrive - Time After Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvmumINKapg) (Cover of Cyndi Lauper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZYxsUDZQ4Q))
Tina Turner - Proud Mary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1uPhj_T0X4) (Cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7052IDTFuFQ))
Edit: Gotta add this
Tufts Beelzebubs - Umbrella (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFvQJOspJLY&feature=related) (Cover of Rihanna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4X7eFbP3u4))

How about that group of students who covered The Vestibules' "Bulbous Bouffant"?
Didn't catch the name. :p
And I think it was The Flying Picketts redoing "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Also, a version i really like (which i covered last weekend at my gig), Chris Cornell doing "Billie Jean".

I like Aerosmith's cover of Come Together (originally from the Beatles, although I like their version too), Disturbed's version of Land of Confusion (originally from Genesis), Metallica's cover of Turn the PagE (originally from Bob Seger, although I like his version too), Rascal Flatts version of Life is a Highway (originally from Tom Cochrane), and others.

Love the Chris Cornell cover...that song always came on at work, and one day I threw my ipod on instead (during opening), and everyone could suddenly deal with the song
Haven't heard the other two...atleast not yet ;)

I'm even more curious why I chose to admit that here, of all places...

Hmm... I'm not sure I could say which is my favourite - generally the original is better (note only generally) and while many covers are as good, it's hard to say... well suffice to say I can't choose a favourite.
Least favourites are, however, a while other story. My pet hate at the moment is Amy Winehouse. Just her in general, but as far as covers go, Valerie. As if her irritating, whiny voice ruining this song wasn't bad enough already, it's now all over the fucking radio! I can't get away from it! I want her to die so much. I wish I could hate her to death.
For more least favourites please refer to any covers of Queen songs. Why try? You are going to fail. It's written in the stars.

That's another great one. I have several friends who "hate" the Beatles, and claimed they would hate the movie because they couldn't stand the music. I've yet to find a single person who didn't enjoy it at least a little.
Favorites are Let It Be, Across The Universe, I Want To Hold Your Hand, and Dear Prudence

Ha ha, it's an automatic reaction every time I hear that song now - destroyed - and it seems to be the basic opinion of everyone since it's first on the list in Youtube - so I never got past your first link.
There should be laws - it's not even that I hold the original in huge regard but to just totally destroy a song is inhumane.
As a link to Mike Myers, I can never hear Foxy Lady without having the urge to do the fox ears nor Bohemian Rhapsody without going into head banging - more destroyed songs.

My favourite covers are:
Johnny Cash - Mercy Seat, One Love, and Hurt
Kirsty McColl - Days, New England
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence
The worst I can think of is Madonna's special rendition of American Pie.
William Shatner's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was fairly cringe-worthy... and for sheer rubbishness I'l say Pantera's cover of Planet Caravan... it just sounds like they turned up the bass and swithced the overdrive on over the old song. :/

Boots of Spanish Leather - Martin Simpson covering Bob D
Redemption Song - Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash covering Marley
The Weight - Travis covering The Band
And many many more
"Daylight in your Eyes" covered by Audiosmog was nice. Unfortunately, it was only an MTV Germany publicity stunt =(
"Enjoy the Silence" by Lacuna Coil is pretty nice, particularly because the original has become tainted to me by emotional association.
"Diamonds are Forever" covered by Kanye West deserves an honorable mention. I didn't love it, but it was one of the great Bond songs, and I was afraid he'd really butcher it. So in the end, I was really glad when he turned it into a decent song.

And you can't beat the jazz-waltz version of Stairway to Heaven by Pat Boone.
Favorite covers, let's see...I would have put Quiet Drive's cover of Time After Time first, but it was taken in the OP!
I like:
- "Song For A Future Generation" by Chicks on Speed (originally B52s)
- "Leaving On a Jet Plane" by Chantal Kreviazuk
- "Heaven" by DJ Sammy (originally Bryan Adams)
- "Hot In Here" by DJ Tiga and Kicks (originally Nelly)

The Sex Pistols' cover of "My Way" by The Who always sticks out in my mind as a great cover song. However, the best cover song ever? I know that this whole thing is subjective, but you can't deny what Husker Du did to "Eight Miles High", originally by The Byrds.

- anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
- "Glory of Love" by New Found Glory (originally Chicago)
- "Time Won't Let Me Go" by The Bravery
- anything by The Hippos
- "We Will Become Silhouettes" by Iron and Wine (originally The Postal Service)

I think my favourite cover has to be the entire Dub Side of the Moon LP by the Easy Star All-Stars, a dub version of, obviously, Dark Side of the Moon. The All-Stars recreated the whole album, using no samples of the original piece. It’s a great collection of covers, and a fantastic record in its own right.
Here’s my favourite off of the album: Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz7OFW3p1C8&feature=related).
Honourable mentions have to go to Me First & the Gimme Gimmes, especially with I Believe I Can Fly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV3XQcCyyPc), and Johnny Cash with Personal Jesus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvmDgNxlrkU&feature=related) or Solitary Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5rVmXyZP5s).

I don't know if ever of you have heard of BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge? Basically bands come in to this national radio station in the UK, and perform normally their latest single and a cover version. Some from this have been brilliant, even if you don't like the artist. Will Youngs version of Hey Ya by Outkast was particularly good, as was the cover of Maneater, a Nelly Furtado song, by Boy Kill Boy.

Holy crap...and I thought that was a Soft Cell song (though without that list I wouldn't have been able to come up with the name...) Well, you learn something new and pointless every day...
[edit]Dude, the video is hilarious (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEh5pWjcWCg). It's a dude dressed like Caligula bitching out some kid. Fuck the 80s were weird. I mean, I knew at the time, but I didn't really know...

Rammstein covers of "Shtil" by Aria and "Pet Sematary" by the Ramones
Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of "Just Like Heaven"
Spiderbaits version of Black Betty I like very much.
I once heard a gothic metal cover of an entire Brittany Spears album.. sounded MUCH better than the original. (Badass guitar riff, Oops I did it again!)
Mettalica's version of Turn the Page
Korn's cover versions of the songs Word Up, and One I really dug, but I don't think they are better than the original.
OK.. I once listend to symphonic versions of Pantera songs played entirely on the cello... those were... different...
Johnny Cash's cover version of Hurt.. I like it much much better than the original NIN version.

Every single one. Maybe.
Nah, Marilyn Manson's version sucked.
I quite liked it. Not as good as the Soft Cell version, but interesting in its own way.
