Age Old Question...

We'll keep this question simple. Do you like Sushi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sushi)*?

Nice simple question.

For those of you who haven't tried it, would you ever try it?
For those of you who have, what do you like/hate about it?
-- and if you like it, what is your favourite type?

* Link provided so I don't have to list every variation

EDIT - poll added.

Never had it, but I hear it's really good. Though, I'm not a huge fan of seafood. Then again it might taste different when it hasn't been cooked.

Yeah, I like sushi.

I like pretty much all of it, 'though if I have the choice I'll tend to avoid any California rolls, or similar items, since I'm not overly keen on sesame seeds for some reason. :)

As a vegetarian who's always hated fish even when he did eat meat, I can say categorically that it's rubbish.

There are non-fish versions. There are versions that use just vegetables, like Cucumber and California rolls... of course, it's not as good. ;)

I love sushi. Last year, when I was on the University meal plan, one of the dining halls had sushi. Combine that with the ability to get in free, whenever you want... I miss that meal plan. I kinda wish I still on campus so it'd be a worthwhile buy. :(

I like some sushi. I'm one of those freaks who doesn't particularly like raw tuna, but I'm extremely fond of yellowtail and salmon and several others. Eel can be tasty. Sea urchin is like eating broken glass that is on fire. I will not eat octopus because I worship them as gods.

I also like the fancy Americanized rolls (like California rolls and Dragon Rolls and such), but I think those belong in their own category since they aren't usually "sushi" in the traditional sense.

Well i think someones happy.
Personally i've never had sushi, some people i know say it tastes horrible, others like it.
my favourite fishy food however is probably muscles (i don't know why, but i suspect it's because my dad will eat anything, it sort of passed on to me, in fact he's more an eating machine, and will complain at no food ever. even if it's burnt, cos he grew up a poor kid and was taught if you don't eat what's in front of you you don't eat lol.)

If you like the taste of fish, then you will like sushi. Heh I totaly get your dad. My wife often beams with happiness when discusiing her hubbies eating habits, and says thingfs like 'he'll eat any thing I put in front of him'

Sushi is really tasty, yet strangely... normal.

I don’t know if it’s just that I’ve always eaten a lot of fish, but the first time I tried sushi I was expecting (rather naively, perhaps) some incredibly different taste experience.

But it’s ‘just’ fish with rice.

Lovely stuff. No-one should be afraid to try it.

I love it. Not a big fan of the Americanized rolls (avocado WTF?). I prefer nigiri style or sashimi (yes, I know sashimi isn't sushi). Freshwater eel is by far my favorite followed by a salmon roe roll with a quail egg on top. I also like salmon, tuna, sea eel, red snapper and squid. I'll pretty much eat any of it except octopus.

Yes, I like sushi. generally speaking. I had these tuna thingies once that had an unappealing texture, but for the most part, I've enjoyed it. *nod*

I've never tried sushi, though I would like to. I'd probably want to try it on the West Coast, though; I live in North Dakota and the only fish we get fresh around here is walleye. Even that can be a couple of days old, depending on where you go.

Sushi's OK, but I prefer sashimi.

1) I'm not a big fan of most cooked fish. Not only is the taste different, the texture is as well.

2) Not all fish sushi is raw. Eel, octopus, and shrimp are usually cooked.

3) Not all raw sushi or sashimi is fish. One of my favorite kinds of sashimi is chicken. (Nope never been sick on it. YMMV, do NOT try at home.)

Heh. Sounds almost like my reverse list. Eel is about the only sushi I really do not like at all, but I love octopus. One of my favorite tachinomiya does an awesome avacado sashimi.

i love em all, everysingle damned roll out there

one of my personal favorites is the octopus roll, sounds horrible, but tastes great!

tempura fried are some of the best you can get, but not nearly as good for you as the ones that aren't fried

to those that haven't ever tried sushi, its a must, even if you don't like cooked sea food, it tastes so much different

P.S. never get sushi at a buffet, usually they have lower quality sushi thats horrible for a new comer to try

I've tried it a couple of times, and the only way I like it is when I virtually soak it in wasabi.

I mean, from what I've tried, it all tastes like bland rice, wrapped around a bland bit of vegetable matter, and a bland bit of something chewy. Maybe this is because I've only ever had shitty sushi, but there's a place on campus that some people rave about, and I can't stand it.

I love the vegetarian versions, but some of it is freaky. I ordered a tofu dish at a japanese restaurant, thinking surely it would be vegetarian, but it came with a garnish of still-squirming fish skin. freaky. the fried vegetables and artichoke rolls, sweet potato rolls, and cucumber rolls rock, though.

I can empathize (look to the left at my location -- where are you in NoDak?). I moved here from Seattle, and I miss decent Asian food of all kinds, but especially sushi. You can get it here, but the prices it takes to support fresh fish in Bismarck are ridiculous...and this being a state capitol and rife with politicians and state offices, there are just enough fat cats who can afford to have the lovely stuff once a week, when the local fancy-shmancy restaurants offer it up.

I love sushi, especially anything with salmon in it. Salmon and avocado rolls are a particular favorite.

Poli, I just noticed your location...so is it you who watches over me? Is your name Blue Canary, one note spelled L-I-T-E?

AFAIK, salmon + avocado = Seattle roll. I LOVE me some salmon in any guise, but sushi is a favorite. I dig the scallop, shrimp, eel, and other flaking fish rolls as well. It's a texture thing, along with a bit of soy and easy on the wasabi (a little goes a long way...toward clearing your sinuses). In 1990, I spent five weeks of the summer in Kobe, Japan. In addition to (naturally) the best sushi ever, I got to sample Kobe beef from the source as my group toured a "ranch" where the stuff is crafted. Best. Steak. Ever. It was only $10 then, as we were guests. If only it were that inexpensive in the US.

Is it? I sort of thought Seattle rolls had something else in them, too, but I could completely be making that up. I really only get to have sushi when I'm traveling (the Midwest not exactly being known for its great selection of fresh seafood), so I may well be forgetting what's what.

In my own experience, the only decent part of sushi was the wasabi. Then I discovered at Henry's that you can just buy these beans infused with wasabi and I was able to cut out the necessary fish and rice part of the dish.

Part of it is probably my own fault. Most of the times I've had sushi was from some place in Tucson, breaking the rule I normally hold about not eating seafood unless I can see the ocean from the restaurant (you get spoiled growing up by the coast).

Speaking of avocados, by the way, they are pretty much the best thing ever. I used to get California rolls when someone would drag me off for sushi and just eat the avocado portion. I've been very blessed with where I live -- we're just now getting into the season where you can't give avocados away in northern San Diego county.

*doorbell rings*
"Oh, hello."
"Hi. I just wanted to stop by and give you this bag of avocados."
"Gee, what a coincidence! I was just putting all my extra avocados in bags to try and shove them off on my neighbors!"
"...dammit."

Absofrigninglutely correct. The only time I've seen sushi on a buffet was at a weird "Chinese" place in Des Moines that my Sister-in-law suggested when I was visiting with a Japanese lady friend. My lady friend was aghast...

Maybe this is because I've only ever had shitty sushi, but there's a place on campus that some people rave about, and I can't stand it.

I expect it is indeed the case that yoiu haven't had decent sushi. Especially if you're eating on campus.

I love the vegetarian versions, but some of it is freaky. I ordered a tofu dish at a japanese restaurant, thinking surely it would be vegetarian, but it came with a garnish of still-squirming fish skin. freaky.

That would be "hiyayakko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiyayakko)", or cold tofu. (Not a type of sushi, if you weren't clear on that, BTW. ;)) The usual condiments are soy sauce and katsuobushi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katsuobushi). Katsuobushi are shavings of dried smoked bonito, not skin. They are well known for "dancing".)

As for vegitarian cuisine in Japan, you may be rather surprised to find how difficult it is to eat veg. in Japan.

I got to sample Kobe beef from the source as my group toured a "ranch" where the stuff is crafted. Best. Steak. Ever. It was only $10 then, as we were guests. If only it were that inexpensive in the US.

If only it were that cheap in Japan. ;)

Why aren't they sushi?

Many of the western "innovations" in sushi are considered weird in Japan. (The same goes for western foods in Japan - the corn, potato, and mayo pizza or the Curry doughnut thet looks like a jelly doughnut to a poor unsuspecting westerner.)

i think the question is a bit too general.

all sushi are not created equal.

there are definately some i like a whole lot better then others.

wrapping a bunch of stickey rice arround something and then wrapping nori arround that and cutting the resault into cute little slices doesn't automaticly make everything in it wonderful.

raw fish treated that way is mostly good. as are raw or pickled vegies as there are many variety of vegi rolls in the stores here in california in the u.s. where i live.

i don't think i've ever had a sushi i didn't like, but it almost goes without saying there probably is some that i wouldn't. i really haven't all that many of the different kinds with the raw fish in them.

i just know that i do like the kinds that i've had.
