Best Songs Ever?
Hey NSG!
I was thinking about songs I really like, and started wondering what songs other people loved. So, what songs (considering all genres) do you consider the best of the best? Please provide a link if possible.

A Quick One While He's Away is a personal favourite, especially the part where they all just start singing 'cello cello cello cello' in place of an actual cello. Awesome song. Starts off pretty crude and ends up with one of the best ending of any song, ever. Best listened to as the Live At Leeds recording or from The Rolling Stones Rock'n'Roll Circus, I think.

First, a short disclaimer. I'm only 20, and the stuff I like doesn't really go back any further than the nineties. So I'm probably going to make myself look slightly silly if I suggest my favourites are the best stuff ever because obviously theres a whole lot of musical history I know zilch about. Though, generally I don't like older music, a generation thing maybe. Hmm.
Well, heres my personal favourite songs I've ever heard (don't be too harsh :p)
Cave In- Big Riff
Fuck Buttons- Sweet Love For Planet Earth
Genghis Tron- Arms
Green Day- Redundant
Howling Bells- In The Woods
The Mars Volta- L'Via L'Viaquez
Oceansize- Ornament/The Last Wrongs
Radiohead- Paranoid Android
Sigur Ros- Glosoli
Silverchair- Emotion Sickness
Unexpect- Meet Me at the Carrousel
And yes, I've chosen loads. I'm indecisive. Or maybe I'm not. I'll have to think that one over for a little while longer.
You really are irritatingly cheerful aren't you? Really, which self-respecting poster starts a thread with "Hey NSG!"?
Purely at first thought, I would have to say "There is a light that never goes out" by the Smiths. There are many songs I like, many I adore for a time, but "There is a light..." is simply brilliant.

I am rather fond of the song "I Don't Work for a Living" in its country yodeling rendition.
But it has been performed in various ways with slight changes of verses and things.
Two of my favorite songs would be "Peace Train" and "The First Cut is the Deepest" both by Cat Stevens.
There's plenty more of course...

"The Ballad" by thrash metal band Testament is a wonderful and under appreciated song.
"The Heretic (The Lost Child)" by formerly glam metal band W.A.S.P. is another well composed and well written song, perhaps one of the best I've ever heard.
Of course, no one can forget "All Along the Watchtower" as re imagined by Jimi Hendrix. Though originally written by Bob Dylan, Jim Hendrix takes everything to 11. :p
"Rooster" by Alice in Chains is a thoughtful and haunting classic too
"Hallowed be Thy Name" by heavy metal legend Iron Maiden is perhaps the definitive heavy metal song, as well as a powerfully composed and well written statement, regardless of musical style
"Land of Confusion" by Genesis. Nothing more need be said.
"Cult of Personality" by Living Colour is perhaps one of the most thought provoking and intelligent songs that I've ever listened to.
The genius of the instrumental "Orion" by Metallica is second to none as well.
"Wake Up" by Rage Against the Machine sucessfully melds hip hop, funk, jazz, punk and heavy metal into a potent jab at "the Man"
and finally, "Eyes of Stranger" by Queensryche. This is the brilliant climax to their concept album "Operation Mindcrime".
Well, there are some of the songs that i think are the greatest and the reasons why I like em.

That was me. :)
I'm not a big fan of Moonchild, but Number of the Beast is a definite classic. But I also must say that songs made during the Blaze Bayley years such as "Lord of the Flies", "Sign of the Cross" and "Futureal" are at least on par with Maiden's previous work, even though Blaze is not as good of a singer as Bruce. Indeed, few people are.
