Just asking people here whether they know it or not...

And political disscussion can be here too!
I will propose some issues)

"Know Indonesia"? It's not a person, I can't "know it".

I am aware of its geographical conditions, know a few encyclopaedic facts about it and have probably an innumerable amount of prejudices, but other than that, it's not that much a country that affects mine and it's almost as far away from us as one can get, so...

What do ya mean? We men stand higher than women here, thank you very much.

(Yea, be come my ancestors. The Javanese men really consider themself higher than women)
That sort of worldview is not likely to win you many friends ;)

Oop, just imitating my ancestor here. Just look at the Javanese emperors profile, or their nobles, - and I have noble blood, so I may sway to their way- LOL-.:gundge:

Know where it is, know a bit about its geography and ecology, know a bit about its pre-colonial & colonial-era history (including the temporary periods of British rule over Java & parts of Sumatra) and its post-colonial history (including the 'Borneo Confrontation' of the early 1960s, when Britain objected to the Indonesian government trying to annex Brunei, Sarawak and Sabah) too, and about its main problems today: Wouldn't describe myself as an expert on the subject...

And, M. Amin once said (when we still fighting againts the cozy nederlander) that we should have lands from southern Thailand (and include Philipphines) and of course Northern Kalimantan too. Hell, if this is was the case we would have fighting all the allies too!!

Issues: Soekarno, a dictator elected by majority. He was a good civil leader, and in his later years he made a world-class organization that rivaled the UN and nearly become communist himself.
Question: What do you think about him?

I lived in Java before moving to Malaysia and then the UK. Sukarno, dictator or not, was a damn sight better than Suharto.

Corruption. Tackle corruption and the other problems will be tackled as well. Low wages for government workers is the problem, making petty bribe taking rife. Pay the workers well and treat them well. Then make it damn clear that those wages will go south damn fast, and you'll be off to Biak island and get taught a lesson you'll never forget if your found to be taking any kickbacks... Carrot and stick. Corruption is the NUMBER ONEissue.

Logging. Killing everyone, it's simply not sustainable and is degrading the soil so much that one day Kalimantan will make the Kalahari look like an agricultural paradise, by the time the wind and water has done it's work. However it's a symptom of corruption, not the problem itself.
Transmigrasi, good idea, badly done.

Religion, shouldn't be an issue, but getting made into one, and the government is making it worse by pandering to it. Government should grow some balls and stamp down on groups indoctrinating people. It's going to come back and bite the whole nation. Indonesia does not want fundies but the government is too gutless to do what's necessary.

Infrastructure and working conditions. Force up the minimum wage and force the factories to stick to it and basic working conditions. Once wages rise, taxes can be paid and that can go into to providing some decent infrastructure, particularly healthcare, power generation, mains water and the railways.

I don't know much about Indonesia. North of Australia, located on many islands, some of which it shares with other countries. There was a big ruckus over in East Timor not long ago. Very large population and the biggest country with a majority of muslims. Seem to have always been fairly secular, though from what I hear islamism seems to be growing. Used to be run by a guy called Suharto, but I don't know anything about the guy except that Suharto was his only name, which struck me as rather odd. Has those nice orangutans, but it doesn't seem to be looking too good for the critters.

I consider my knowledge of world geography fairly sound. I can list most countries off the top of my head, all but the island nations in the south pacific and carribean.

I know a reasonable amount about Indonesia. Australia's had a very up & down relationship with our Northern neighbour over the last 10 years.

Admittedly I don't really know much about the country even though I have family in Jakarta and Bandung (Chinese Indonesians). I've been to Jakarta a few times, and let me tell you, my Aunt's personal driver is the greatest, skillfully swerving in and out of sidewalks to beat the traffic, good times...You haven't seen nightmarish traffic till you've set foot in Jakarta.

I am not supposed to know much about Dinamarca, unless...

#They are an economic powerhouse.
#They are about to have nukes.
#Their Leader name is Hugo Chavez :D
#Their tiny pathetic boats are playing chicken with our imperial Warships :p
#They recently made a blockbuster movie about your Country.

lets see; i know where it is on the map. i know bali and east temore are there. i know for decades it has had something like some kind of quasi-military government that the u.s. has supported because it was started by someone who was an enimy of its enimies in wwii.

i think ther pretty much sums it up what i 'know' about the place.

oh also it's a group of islands in south east asia, south of most of the rest of south east asia and north of p/ng which is north of oz.

that the people who live on the islands large and small that make it up are not culturally homoginous and that the ubergovernment, or at least the origens of it, as mentioned, came from someplace else, refugees from maoism or something.

of course most governments, and their dominant cultures, in todays world seem to have come from someplace other then where they are and are too powerful and mutually supported of each other for the people who actually live any place and who'se cultures predate them to dislodge.

but i'm not a believer in dominance equaling morality, only in acknowleding the fate accompli of its presence, and not liking the idea of THAT one damd bit.

even in supposedly 'free' and 'democratic' america. which is where i'm more or less embarrassed to live, and which has had its own problems, not the least of which being bullying places like indonesia and just about every place else one way or time or another.

I -usually- avoid asking your personal opinion or.. the Indonesian Gov input at Wikipedia.. because they are very likely to be biased.

From what I know about it (which is not that much), I think Soekarno was not such a bad chap. Soeharto was quite evil though.

I have heard that Indonesia and Malaysia are not on very good terms and are hardly allies...

btw, do people still name kids with sanskrit roots? Megawati is a lovely name. Had a few Indonesian students in my school. Nice guys. All of them had vedic deity based surnames (Indra, Vayoo etc).

Some use them,
Some use the Islamic name,
And some use Western name (duh)

And I agree with you, Vandal-Unknown.
I myself is a very intellectually honest person. And I see smart people become poor, the stupid become rich, just because the smarts have their egos high enough so they don't want to work to a corrupt person. The Stupids? They didn't even know the meaning of Lobby and Corrupt! They only know the practice...
