Ok! I've got a report I need to finish in a few hours. Does anyone here know of some good sources about the historical/cultural context of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (Shakespeare)??????

Try Wikipedia, and look at the sources in the endnotes (footnotes?) and the External Links.

Honestly, this is the type of essay question that delayed my appreciation of Shakespeare for quite a while - it took leaving school to re-read Shakespeare and truly enjoy it without these kinds of stupid questions.

I could understand this question in terms of Julius Caesar, or the Henry IV duology but MND?

I would go back to your teacher empty-handed and state that it's against your principles to write this essay. If nothing else, you'll get some sleep.

Please let us know the results.

I would, except that I've already partly written it. I love Shakespeare, but the guidelines for this essay are particularly exacting. I can only use scholarly sources-- no independent thought allowed. So she's going to get a paper full of my personal beliefs about what Shakespeare was referring to.
