Could the Republicans go to the convention without someone with a majority?

It's early still. There's a good chance the field will clear up sooner or later.

Is it possible that the Republicans could arrive at the convention without a clear winner? According to wiki, it will take 1,191 delegates to win the nomination. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Republican_National_Convention
The latest polls http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/republican_presidential_nomination-192.html
show no candidate has a clear lead nationally. Giuliani leads the pack by about 3% which is probably well within the margin of error. He is followed by McCain and Huckabee who are tied for second place with 17.6% each and Romney comes in third with 14.4%.

It seems we could be in for a 1950's smoke filled back room deal making convention. Would Giuliani give Romney second place in return for his delegates and the nomination?

Would McCain and Huckabee team up to win the nomination with McCain at the top of the ticket? Or, would Giuliani and Huckabee team up and lead the county to another four years of a Republican presidency?

What think you?

What happens if nobody gets a majority?

They negotiate until someone does.

What happens if nobody gets a majority? A republican-free ballot might be quite good considering the lunatics they've put on offer.

I agree with having the republicans miss the next election, maybe we could have them try and be poor for awhile

After posting the poll, I can voted for other. I can see Guiliani teaming up with Huckabee. That might convince the far right voters to elect a president they see as to far to the left. Giuliani has more liberal views on gun control, birth control, and gay marriage that would be offset by Huckabee's stance on those issues.

I'd guess then it would be Romney.

Back room negotiations at the convention. Lots of cigar smoke filled rooms with lots of whiskey and bourbon bottles.

What think you?I think I'd lose whatever respect I had for McCain should he do something like that.

QFT.
I don't see Giuliani getting the nomination, though. He's upset too many conservatives because he's on his second or third wife.

Much more fun, if they drunkenly nominate Kucinich.

But, who would Romney take as his Vice-president to get their delegates behind him? I don't think either Giuilani or McCain would take second chair as both of them are to old. I very much doubt Huckabee would align himself with Romney although that might not be a bad ticket I doubt it would be the best ticket.

So, you propose he should team up with Romney instead of Huckabee?

My (undoubtedly misinformed) theory would be Romney/Huckabee, as they seem the most closely aligned in terms of outlook and policy, but I suppose that could drive them apart just as much. I guess quite a lot depends on how well candidates like Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter do in the next few primaries. It's perhaps too early after only two Republican primaries.

So, you propose he should team up with Romney instead of Huckabee?Lieberman wouldn't be too bad. McCain is the only Republican I can scrounge some serious respect for. Then again, I'd rather not have a Democrat government, much less a Republican one, so I suppose I couldn't really care less what the Republicans do, so long as they don't win the election.

Ron Paul has a much greater chance to win the presidency than any of you folks seem to be willing to admit.
