http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/01/warner-bros-goe.html

Warner Bros will begin producing their movies in Blu-Ray only starting in June, that means that of the "Big Six" Movie Studios 4 support Blu-Ray only and 2 only support HD-DVD...

Blu-Ray
20th Century Fox
Buena vista
Warner Bros (starting in June)
Sony Pictures (well, duh)

HD-DVD
Paramount
Universal

More Info Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_high_definition_optical_disc_formats)...Arm yourselves with knowledge!! Says Blu-Ray has quite a lead on HD-DVD already...

In terms of movies sold, Blu-Ray is ahead everywhere. For players, Blu-Ray is way ahead when you factor in PS3 sales

Anywho...do you have any HD players? Do you watch HD movies? Which Format will come out on top? Do you care?

POLL AHOY!!

I'm staying with regular DVD's until the last possible moment.
Frankly, I dont CARE if you can see (insert famous person here)'s nosehairs. I dont WANT to.
The slightly sharper definition is hardly worth the billion dollars for a blu-ray player and the extra $20 per disc for blu-ray movies.
HD-DVDs are better price-wise, but still hardly worth it for the rather marginal increases.

Now, when they come up with DVD players that beam the movies directly into your mind in full 3D and let you walk around in them, I'll pay extra.

Assassins Creed kicks ass in SD, let alone HD.

Wait wait wait wait...are those capital letters I see?

I thought Blu-Ray did itself in when they passed on porn. I don't know if that will have a delayed effect or not. Porn has driven most formats.

Three words.

Big...friggin'...whoop...

I really couldn't care less about "high-definition". They said the same damn thing about DVD when it first came out. How much more "high-def" do you want.

And all this "disk speed" and "laser aperture diameter" and whatnot means jack shit to me. All I know is what I keep hearing: Blu-Ray is SLIGHTLY better than HD-DVD but is more expensive.

I'm sorry, but a few pixels difference between the two won't convince me to plop down extra money. Sell it to me.

And no, I'm not an HD-DVD fanboy either. I just don't care.

And don't these companies know how costly a format war is for both consumers and the industry.

Anyway. It doesn't matter to me. I'll keep buying DVDs for the time being, at least until one format has won this war, and the price has dropped to a level that the common man can afford.

Meh, as long as I can afford to buy which ever one eventually wins and the appropriate player then I don't care. In the mean time I'll stick with DVDs until they stop making them.

If so, I applaud them for throwing a wrench in this damned format upfuckery.

Well, a scout-about says they're proposing $799.

I can really see those selling like hotcakes.

EDIT: It's Samsung, apparently. DB-UP5000.

Remember, a PS3 is what, $400? And a HD-player $200? Hmm. Difficult choice.

People still can't decide between "less filling" and "tastes good". I wouldn't expect them to agree on media formats. :p

Not worth getting an HD player yet. Its still not the big thing like the swutch from VHS to DVD. It will take a while for one to die out and the other to eventually phase out regular DVDs. Whowill be the next BetaMax(Which was made by Sony!)But anyone who has a 360 or PS3 really sees the difference in games. But I(and I don't think a lot of others) want to go out and get a whole new, huge, expensive HDTV and Blu Ray and/or HDDVD player.
Besides smarter to get a PS3 than a BluRay player. And 360s play HDDVDs. So if you have one or are planning on getting one don't bother getting a Blu Ray or HDDVD player.
Pan-Arab Barronia

I didn't really get the 360 for the HD-DVD thing though. I just heard Assassin's Creed was awesome on it, rather than the PS3. That and I got a HDTV for my bedroom wall, and needed something that was black to go with it, preferably that played DVDs.

I don't see either of them replacing DVD any time soon. Blu-ray has an apparent lead because of PS3 sales, but most people who own the PS3 still aren't going to shell out the $30+ for blu-ray DVD's.

When the price comes down, then maybe one will replace DVD.

I dont know every person I know that owns the PS3 is shelling out for the movies.

Along with the Xbox360 and HDDVD's for that matter.

Though most of them are running a setup you can see the difference in quality between regular DVD's and HD programming

I'm far more interested in their potential uses for data storage. At fifty gigabytes a disc, I could easily store huge amounts of stuff I don't want to keep on my computer on either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, depending on which one wins.

So let me know when Blu-Ray or HD-DVD writers for computers come out. (As well as write and rewriteable discs, preferably rewriteable.)
The Infinite Dunes

Meh, I'll probably just end up downloading the films instead. Don't have to worry about formats then.

Plus, once solid state media takes off disk drives will become dirt cheap and you won't even bother to consider using them as storage.

So let me know when Blu-Ray or HD-DVD writers for computers come out. (As well as write and rewriteable discs, preferably rewriteable.)They are. They start at around $450 and are backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs. Of course you can have Dell install one for only $500 more than a DVD drive.

Note: all prices are in Canadian dollars, at the sale price in Canada. You will probably find them cheaper in the US since you pricks have been gouging us since our dollar reached parity.

I won't care about either of them until Blu-Ray is inevitably standing over HD-DVD's mangled corpse with holding up it's severed head and letting out a war cry. Even then I won't care too much though.

Because they exist to make money.

Plus, both technologies have merit. Blu-Ray is technologically better, no question, but it's also more expensive to produce due to the blue laser. So it's a question of whether you'd have technological superiority or cheaper-but-less-effective.

Personally, I favor technological superiority.

But If you ask me what Video player I want right now:

This is a must have for me:
any USB Avi/Dvix/Xvid/Mp3/Jpeg capable. with a hard Drive. ~$50 + 100 for Harddrive.
http://cw3.wallashops.co.il/mall_product_images/auction_product/RWDVDRV09.jpg

Now I guess they will soon be selling LCD/Plamas TVs with a multimedia USB port (Dvix/Mp3/Jpeg capable port). 300-2000$
That works for me too :D

Seriously, I watch standard DVDs on my 360 which is hooked up to my HDTV via the Yb\Pb\R (is that the right name?) component cables, and they look just fine. Yeah, HD movies look BETTER, but it's nowhere NEAR the contrast between, say, VHS and DVD. So until one format wins, screw both of 'em; I'll just rent HD flicks via Live or watch standard DVDs with no issue.

You know, I initially thought that porn was enough fo HD-DVD to win it, however, after talking with a friend of mine, I have come to the conclusion that it will probably be blu-ray.

Blu-ray is actually a better technology, which means we won't need a different better system for longer. (I guess HD-DVD is just ultra-layered regular DVD?)

Yes, blu-ray is more expensive, but prices are dopping faster for PS3 than they are for Xbox 360, and those platforms IMO are a bigger account than the individual players themselves....
