Too cool for school

Trollgaard

Well, I have officially decided that I a too cool for school (meaning I am fucking sick of it), and I'm going to take a semester off to work and save up some money. After that semester, maybe back to school, maybe the Navy, maybe the French Foreign Legion. Who knows? Not me, not yet!

Anyone else take a break from school, currently or in the past? Do you regret the decision? Do you stand by it?

On the weekends I don't physically go, but it haunts me still.

Little over 6 years in no breaks, I even worked on campus so I was there all 40 hours a week minimum and through breaks so no summer or winter breaks.

My advice is to stick it through and get it done.

If you think you hate school now, wait until you have had six months off and suddenly have to go back...THEN you'll hate school.

Considering the grammar mistakes in your OP and general poor usage of English & sentence structure, perhaps you should reconsider your decision to leave.

Wow, weird. I read that and just realized I have never, in my entire life, not been taking some class or another for that long a time period. Bleh.

Second year.

I would recommending sticking it out, I know I had a rough time with that second year and there would be no way in hell I would have came back even though it would have been the right move if I had

Same here. 14 or so years in school. I need a damned break.

I'm already out of school. Thanks for your advice though. I've heard the same from some people, and just the opposite from others. Oh well. I'll find out if it was a good choice in the fall.

That second year is just a bitch ... hard but not yet interesting cause you are not really into your major yet.

Personally my worst year of either my under grand or post grad school career

I think so too. Last I heard, the situation in Algeria wasn't looking too good - the French could probably use a few enthusiastic recruits. :)

My dislike of you, Trollgaard, aside, you should stick it out. My 2nd year pretty much blew until the end.

Plus, pretty much everyone I've met who has been out of college for a while wishes they were back in their college years.

Dont do it, people dont usualy return to school, I have several freinds who are like that. Then they join the Military and hate it. Just go to school.

Yep yep I was I had an extra 4 years or so at school.

If you're going to enlist, Navy's the way to go. Assuming you're not too tall. Drastically reduces your chances of getting killed or horribly maimed. Plus Iraq has almost no coastline! I think that's the Navy's new slogan.

excellent idea

dont live with your parents. get your own place and pay your own bills. no mooching.

it will help clear your mind and let you know whether or not you are the kind of person who needs the kind of job you might get with a degree.

I've been "taking a break" from it since spring 2006. I don't plan on returning.

It all depends what your longer term plans are. You have none, so there's no great urgency to leave. It also means that the more options you leave open, the better - and cutting short your education closes of quite a lot of options that are hard to reopen later on. Of course, you could end up doing something that requires little formal education, in which case sticking out your course will feel like a bit of a waste of time.

It's a bit of a gamble either way: a possible wasted year of study on one side, against a possible lifetime of wishing you had better qualifications on the other. (That said, my academic qualifications are totally unnecessary to the career I've chosen, but I still don't regard my 3 years at university wasted.)

Anyone who's "too cool for school".... isn't.

I'm taking two years off because I graduated HS at 16 and didn't feel I was mature enough to go to college, let alone psychologically sound. I'm not sure if I'd stand by my decision, as I have no idea how things would have turned out had I gone on to college immediately; but I am starting to get bored of the domestic lifestyle. (Work is interesting, but irregular.)

I came away with a decent degree about 4 years ago now. I'm sick of working life already. It's my dream to go back into academia permanently, but I don't (and will probably never) have the funds to do it.

You should have enjoyed it while you could because, as has been pointed out, when people leave mid-way through, they rarely ever go back.

If you can't be arsed with education, you will get very fucking sick of the French Foreign Legion, since it's very much about repeated drill.

Incidentally, you'll fail the motivation-based bit of the test.

If you think you are fed up with school , just think how you'll feel at 5 am being shouted at by a NCO, or what 20 yrs of work at mac'ds feels like when you could have stuck school out for another 18 months and got a decent high paying job...:headbang:

The Navy is looking mighty fine right now. I just got back from talking to a recruiter, and took practice version of the ASVAB (I think that is what it is called), and got a 94 out of 99. The average on the test is a 35. So, needless to say the recruiter gave me some info on some advanced programs, including the nuclear program. I'll have to give this some serious thought!

Yeah, so? I can leave for boot camp several months after I sign up and train for boot camp, if I'm really out of shape. I'd probably need to cut down on smoking, start jogging, and lifting a few months beforehand, but it won't be bad. Its the Navy-not the Marines or the Army. We are sailors first and foremost, not rifleman. But yeah, boot camp won't be loads of fun, but nor will it blow total ass.

I took a quarter off my first year of undergrad because I had a nervous breakdown. My parents wanted me to stay home until the next fall (I left at the end of Feb.) but I went back for Spring Quarter because I was afraid if I didn't go then, I'd never go back again. I don't regret going back.

I did last semester. Kind of. I was on co-op, and I will be honest with you: I missed structured classes. I missed seeing my friends. I am so glad to be back on campus (even though classes don't start until Tuesday, I have my room key on faith from my hall director, I haven't technically checked in yet, I have only seen one of my friends since getting back, and I haven't met my roommate yet).

I wouldn't go so far as saying it'll be that easy, but it's not as hard as it's made out to be. It will, however, be quite tough, and I can say with certainty the thing that will bother me the most is the inability to speak my mind.

Well, that and the gassing...
