Late Night talk shows...your thoughts?

What are your thoughts on the return of 3 late night talk shows (The Tonight Show, Late Night, and the Late Show)?

I thought that Jay Leno's monologue was hilarious (better than usual). Conan was OK, but it wasn't as funny. I didn't watch Letterman. The beards threw me off, though.

And if this thread has already been created, then too bad. I looked through 3 pages and didn't see anything so I'm just posting a new thread.

I like Leno. his tet-a-tet with John and kevin sound more natural and the ribbing when he screws up flows better.

Hmm... I heard Leno changed writers, or something of the sort.

Conan O'Brien & particularly David Letterman are way too far up their own arses to be funny. Jay Leno is OK, but it's not really my thing.

Are you a writer?

Anyways, Conan rocks my socks and I only watch the beginning of the Leno show (in my opinion the only nearly funny part of the show.) Letterman is definitely my second favorite, and I never really got into the Daily Show although the Colbert show is hysterical.

Isnt it funny how similar all of these shows are?

I was a bit skeptical of Oliver Pocher at first, but he is a sincere, albeit politically incorrect, soul and a lot funnier than I thought he would be.

Arrogant & completely in love with themselves. They think they're fantastic, but I think they're unfunny wankers.

Hacks, especially Stewart and Colbert. They all need a team of writers to be funny.

I don't claim to be a comedian. I just find it so hilarious that people finally got to realize that Colbert and Stewart just read from a script and have a team of writers come up with their famous wit.

I notice Bill O'Reilly, loathsome creature that he is, doesn't need a team or writers, or a crowd of sycophants cheering him on to run a show.

are you sure about that? its not easy to write a whole show by oneself every freaking day. (he is on daily isnt he?)

You think people were under the impression they ad-libbed for 20 minutes? You think Kevin Spacey is less of an actor because he didn't write his scripts?

And O'Reilly has writers.

No. You just claim to understand how comedy works, which you plainly don't. The joke isn't on us. It's on you, the only person ignorant enough to actually think that comedians don't rely on teams of writers.

Leno is instant funny, you never need to have watched a show and you can tune in and you'll probably laugh at some point.

The thing is that I don't find that it's sustainable for me, I can watch or not watch.

Letterman takes some time to enjoy and the more you watch the more you enjoy it as you pick up the style of the show. I find him far better than Leno overall and tend to watch when I can.

I do find Conan a bit too...actually, Pickleoo has put it right, he seems to try too hard to be funny.

Actually lightweight, the entire point I am making is that a lot of people seem to have thought that Stewart and Colbert just got on TV and talked and were all naturally funny. I was the one that always pointed out that they were just talking heads who read from scripts. Actors if you wish.

Well, you seem to think that that would be surprising, so my point still stands. All comedians do that. Only someone completely ignorant of how comedy works would A: think that they didn't use writers and B: think that most people think that they didn't use writers.

Oh, and C: think that it's what's said that matters is comedy. It's not. It's delivery.

And his point is that nobody thought that they "just got on TV and talked". And Stewart is naturally funny, as you can see from his stand up and his interviews etc.
