The Consumer Electronics Show is set to start rolling next week in Las Vegas, but details of the show tend to be a bit leaky each year. This year's first leak comes from Sony's CES 2008 page, which mentions a PSP feature -- Skype support -- not seen before, reports Videogamer.

In the PlayStation Portable page, the site mentions the ability to "call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances via Skype for PSP system." For those not familiar with Skype, the popular Web service allows free PC-to-PC calling. It's also starting to be picked up by cell phone manufacturers to appeal to tech-savvy owners who want free and low-cost calls near WiFi hot spots. Giving this functionality to the PSP makes it one step closer to the oft-rumored PlayStation Phone, without quite dipping into disastrous territory.

If the announcement is going to be made, CES is the place, so we'll be keeping a close eye on the house of Kutaragi next week.

That's actually pretty freaking cool but isn't the PSP's battery life abysmal?

That would be... well, I'm not sure whether it would be the worst punishment ever or the greatest gift ever.

A punishment as Sony consoles are devilspawn, a gift because, hey, it's a load of free Sony stuff to smash.

Unfortunately, yes.
However, the DS still outsells it by miles, IIRC.

I wonder if it's possible anymore for someone to like something without it going hand in hand with hate...

Quite possible and, with many things for me, it does apply.
However, I've had a rather irrational resentment of Sony ever since the days of the PS and N64.

Its a cool little feature, but will it be supported on the PSP fat? No question on the skinny but Im sure they will want people to switch so that would be a smart move although a bit bothersome for us fat users...

I sort of have a phobia of skype at the moment in that I just don't like the thing

however this does look interesting because a PSP is rather cheaper than an iPhone ;)

I can usually get through a few days on a full battery

Its also a lot bigger than the iphone... Anyways Im pretty sure this currently available in the Homebrew communities and never reached much publicity. Just Sony trying to cash in on a realy bad console in my opinion.

You know that VGCharts just make up their numbers every month, and then compensate for the error the month afterward right?

I didn't, no.
However, if that is the case, then simply discount the last month of data. ;)
It's all the same in the long run.

VGChartz themselves would disagree with you:

http://www.vgchartz.com/methodology.php

How VG Chartz comes up with its figures

Sales figures are determined through two important methods

Data Sampling – VG Chartz gathers random data from a sample of the total number of retailers.
Shipment information – VG Chartz has contacts with publishers who give their best estimates on number of products shipped.

Because the number of retailers selling videogames is quite large, it is possible to attain statistically valid results from a small sample.

It then becomes a matter of working backwards by having:
The approximate number of retailers.
Historical sales figures.
Data from sales tracking agencies as reference points in accuracy.

There are obvious limiting factors as well – few games have above a 40% attach rate, a game will never sell more than the console user base, publishers do not ship significantly more or less than they expect to be sold

Also, from Nintendo for the DS (up to Sept 07):
53,640,000

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2007/071025e.pdf#page=22

And Sony for the PSP:

FY2006
9,770,000

FY2007
Q1 2,140,000
Q2 2,580,000

Total: 14,490,000

It doesn't appear to have been updated for Q3 yet, but even so that's a pretty miniscule figure. Its sales would have to be pretty high in Q3 to match even half of DS sales.

Apparently the NPD get really annoyed at them for using their numbers to correct and extrapolate theirs. It's a pretty funny thought really.
