Collecting

I have observed that people like to collect things. Some people just accumulate stuff. Some, like me, are more organized in their acquisition and collect specialized stuff. I collect teapots, cookie cutters, knives and books. My daughter collects tarantulas, comic books, bayonets, and antique books. My son collects art (no, not that kind!).
What do you collect? Do you just accumulate stuff or does it have a specific aim?

Books, comic books, good recipes and lovers.

I had a stamp collection when I was (very) young... it's probably still in my Mum's loft somewhere.
Nowadays, I suppose that you could say that I collect books since I never throw any of them away. They're not well organised, or indeed even all in the same house, but I still have them all and I add to them all the time.
It could also be said that I collect digital files... I save all the interesting stuff that I come across whilst wandering the world of the 'net and it's all still lying around on the many hard drives connected to the various bits of my network at home. Like my books, it's all horrifically disorganised. I should really sort it all out one day but I might just wait a little longer and then pay some poor unsuspecting Information Systems undergraduate to do it for me :p

I've been collecting coins since I was in grade school, though the vast majority of what I have I found rummaging through loose change. It's not a very valuable collection, but I enjoy working on it.
I also collect knitting patterns, though I will be writing my own from now on because I am disillusioned by what I found on the internet. It's so inaccurate sometimes.

Why do I still have random notes and pieces of paper? Because I've had bad experiences with throwing stuff away, and wanting to read/use it again six months later. So I just keep everything, hoarding FTW!

I collect people who are pleasant to be around, helpful when needed, and intellectually stimulating.
I'm still missing in your collection :p

I don't think I collect anything, not consciously though. :( I'm so boring.

Why don't your start collecting problems? I'll give you mine ;)
I don't collect. I just happen to come by things such as traffic cones, for sale signs and otherrandom junk. Some advice for you lot: Never buy a house near a university because objects that lie outside your house become fair game :)

I collect coins. I accumulate books.
I had started a business card collection once, but I lost that.
I collect soda cans and bottles. I have over a hundred.
I sorta collect every personal thing ever written and handed to me. Yes, that means that I still have every postcard ever sent to me since I was, say, 13, and I also possess several boxes of those little scraps of paper with messages on it that we sent around the classroom in high school, and there's not a single written notice from my flatmates I've knowingly thrown away (yes, even those bearing such crucial messages as "will clean monday - hope that's okay"). Hey, at least when I move house, the majority of my boxes are lightweight.

Yes, but think how many fewer boxes you'd have if you didn't collect all those scraps of paper? :p
I collected coins when I was a kid, and I'm collecting the US Statehood Quarters now. As someone said, I also acquire books.
This made me think, I ought to maybe start collecting coins or something again, it was fun.

I guess CDs, I have a little over 2000, maybe 2500. But that's because I was a buyer at a record store and labels gave them to me, plus my store discount allowed me to buy albums I wouldn't normally. I quit that job over 5 years ago and there are still CDs I haven't even opened yet.

If you're still interested in that sort of thing, I can hook you up with some blank records. I can't do anything with them, maybe you can.

Pharmaceutical promotional items (pens, clocks, notepads, mugs, etc.)
also, old cookbooks, especially like church cookbooks or family cookbooks, I get them from garage sales.
I used to collect cows, but I got up to like 1500 of them and didn't have room for anymore and got tired of every present I ever got being a cow thing so I quit.

That would be freaking awesome. Except my record player doesn't work and I've never even seen something that will record onto them.
Though I do have a lot of DJ friends...
hmmm...let me think about it.

Somehow I managed to avoid people overdoing walrus gifts, so it's still cool when I get one.

I collect model cars, but not seriously.
Both me and my brother use my nephew as a surrogate for our Hot Wheels and model car collecting. It reached it's greatest level of silliness when I gave him a model of The Car from the movie, The Car...not even his dad knew that one...

Yeah, but think how the box industry would suffer. It's all for the good of the nation!

Gee, you remind me, I also have a thing for LittleThings*, which I "collect" insofar as that I take them when I can get them, and am by now even occasionally presented with them by friends - but I don't, you know, go out of my way to buy them or anything.
*LittleThings are all those items, preferably relating to either food or bathroom articles, that you get from promotion people, in hotels, glued into magazines etc., like mini bars of soap, wee little shampoo flasks, those hilarious mini deodorant bottles about as big as my thumb; I even have a mini razor plus thumb-sized shaving cream container and a collapsible toothbrush- oh, and a collapsible spoon! That last one was a real find. Oh, and most recently, I acquired this absolutely awesome soap thingie box- anyone know those dispenser of Listerine sheets (http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:edOx1S5UawKMUM:http://www.creativemag.com/images2000%255CListerinePocketPak24%27s.jpg)? Sorta like that, only it dispenses soap sheets, and you take one and put it in your hands with water, it dissolves, et voilá! The perfect soaping experience.
.... yes, I'm fascinated and easily amused. So?

1500 cows? Wow, and I thought the 30-something cows I got over about three years and still have sitting around was a lot...
Other then that, I guess I sort of collect old computers, I have something like 7 computers in the house, including a still-working Windows 95 desktop.
tinbugs bite (refrence the magic duplicator, circa 1940+ something or other)
my wife damnably accumulates, which i think is a game of being conned, unless its stuff you find for free, like lugnuts and tire weights by the side of the road.
i'd rather create and explore, (and not have piles of accumulated crap in the way of doing so)
although i do like industrial fiddly bits and industrial fiddly bit catalogues, preferably current ones, but outdated ones are sources of inspiration too.

Im a record collector...its the only thing im anal about really...im abit of a vinyl nerd...have over 30,000 records ranging from soul to punk and everything inbetween...been collecting half my life...though its not a totally useless collection...I am a DJ after all...my record collection means more to me than anything...I have relatively few pictures of me throughout my late teens and 20s...but my records are my memories...only have to put a certain tune on and im transported back in time to a certain memory
I also collect old 2000ad comics...I have a few thousand dating back to the 1970s
