what's yours?
now, i don't mean a general "why are we here" sort of thing, such big questions seem a bit mastabatory to me. i'm interested in your own sense of personal purpose, your wishes, your intentions, your goals, your place as you have found it or hope to find it.
i've recently had a revelation on this front, all i need is a giggle. life is a giggle and any other perspective is likely to drive me up the wall. and by that i mean, my life has to be fun and enjoyable or there's really no point to it. one day i'll be an archaeologist, but right now i'm having a riot as a bartender/waiter so i'm not gunna move on til it pales and i don't see any good reason why i should.

Overall?
Making this world a better place with me in it, than it would have been if I hadn't been around.
That means generally being awesome to people and trying to make a difference.

I want to, ultimately, cure people of mental disorders and make their lives more stable and functional, or at least make their lives more tolerable than they are now if I can't cure whatever the problem is.

Why are we here? What's life all about?
Is God really real, or is there some doubt?
Well, tonight, we're going to sort it all out,
For, tonight, it's The Meaning of Life.
That's my meaning of life.

Success is the meaning of life
I've always maintained that the "Meaning of Life" is life itself. More specifically, to live life to the fullest, whatever one's definition of "fulfillment" may be.
For me, my ultimate goal is to have a good career, be financially secure, healthy and happy. Period. Right now my path is that of a nurse, but who knows? That may change. Right now I don't see myself as a father. But hell, I can be flexible.
To reproduce.
End of story.
The whole point of life is to pass on one's unique genetic finger print.

Success is the meaning of life
Seconded.
You define for yourself what material shape your success takes, but succeeding when overcoming challenges is what human beings do, and which can therefore be called the meaning of our lives.
The rest is up to you. In my case it's to earn many, many millions of dollars doing something challenging and enjoyable (financial markets), living in many places around the world, buying fancy cars and houses and helping people in the Third World overcome their challenges by sponsoring their rise to greatness.

I think of that as a "Biological" Meaning of Life. But I like to think that humans have evolved beyond simply defining themselves through passing on their genes. Hence the concept of goals.

That's my meaning of life.
It's all about that last little chocolate.
For me, it's that i have an insatiable curiosity about most things, and i don't see "most things" running out of existence any time soon, so i'm liable to be busy 'til i'm outta time.
Other than that, catching up my faculty to said curiosity/intellect, and a little ditty from Gandhi about "being the change you want to see in the world".
Meaning in life?
...
Helping people. Helping the world. Making it a better place, a kinder place, a gentler place for all. That's my meaning. http://generalitemafia.ipbfree.com/uploads/ipbfree.com/generalitemafia/emo-Hug_emoticon.gif

I think that what makes life worth living is not really achieve our goals, whether personal or altruistic (if one succeeds, however, is better :-) but the very fact of struggle to achieve them.
I think of that as a "Biological" Meaning of Life. But I like to think that humans have evolved beyond simply defining themselves through passing on their genes. Hence the concept of goals.
The question is "What is the meaning of Life", not, "what is the point of sentient beings"
My answer is correct for all life; be it bacteria, Plant, or Animal (and such other things)

I don't think that's an age thing... I'm happy when I giggle. And I think deep down, the main goal any person has is to be happy in life. Everything else follows from that goal.

Naaa your stretching in the wrong direction. I asked because I am more interested in this sudden shift and want to ascertain whether it is the youthful mind that caused this.

your "place" doesn't have to be where you stagnate and it need not have any geographical bounds. for myself i really hope i never get tied down to any place too permanently, one of the reasons why i refuse to return to jersey where i grew up even though the money and quality of life is better than what i can make for myself here. i'll stay in edinburgh maybe a year or two more, then i'm off to wherever. basically if anywhere stops being fun it's pointles staying.

Shift from whatever your meaning of life used to be to this:

I just wondered if this shift was an age thing(23 it might be) or something else.

oh, ha, well in part i guess. more of a "finished university and getting extremely irritated by being pressured into getting a 'proper job'" type of thing. i don't think i really thought of any 'meaning of life' before now, never really thought of what makes me tick.

To improve the world, and to do so while, as much as possible, achieving happiness, freedom, and understanding for myself.
I essentially want to get by. Love people, try to make the world a better place for those who come after me.
Also I try to experience everything I can.

To kill each other in glorious and amazing ways, then wonder who the idiot was that took it seriously and started killing people better than others.
But seriously i don't know, maybe it's really just a sort of hell, you cultivate a little heaven later or something.
Maybe it's to give other people a purpose is to exist, then become very very bored.
Or it could be like the computer chip idea of why we are here (assuming that you people do actually exist).
I suppose this sort of question could lead to the determinism or free will debate but i'll leave that out for now.

Perhaps everyone else knew that 42 is not "the meaning of life", it is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything. No-one knows what the question is.

I just one to be that person that people know to be happy and easily approachable. I also want to be a journalist who gets to the truth, no matter what. The world has become addcited to celebrity that it is often forgotten about the journalists that have sacrificed their lives to make sure a story gets out or something changes. I want to make people aware of their causes because I feel their is so much unbased hate against journalists.
Currently 183 journalists are known to be imprisoned in many countries. However this number could be much higher.
I don't think that's an age thing... I'm happy when I giggle. And I think deep down, the main goal any person has is to be happy in life. Everything else follows from that goal.
I think the OP was really asking: "how do you want to attain happiness in life?". If "making the world a better place", "success", "earning a lot of money" wouldn't make us happy we wouldn't say it's our goal in life. Just pursuing happiness probably won't work, you need to have something to be happy about.
