These days, alternative/indie/folk/punk cabaret...that sort of stuff. At the moment in my car I've got Dresden Dolls, Regina Spektor and Emma Dean. And now I've just heard of an album I apparently absolutely have to have: The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. So now I've gotta try and find it somewhere.
Rock and heavy metal. The heavier, the better. Can't stand rap or country. One is a horrible instrument of torture use to make people envy the deaf. The other is the result of over a century of inbreeding. Their daddy-uncle-sisters should feel ashamed of themselves.
What I like is better defined by what I don't like: Pop, rap, country, most punk, hair metal and anything that sounds remotely like any of the following bands: Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine or Pearl Jam.
...
Okay fine.
My current favorites are Rammstein, System of a Down (and by extension, Serj Tankian) and Tool (and by extension, A Perfect Circle).

Did you like the times that I promised you
Open wounds on your brow
Little angel in red

Dry your eyes and we'll leave

I prefer classic rock bands, and the singer/songwriters of the late 60s to early 80s. I was raised on the oldies, straight up, and went through many phases (including a fun rap phase). I've grown, now, to be a full blown fanatical fan of Bruce Springsteen (cannot begin to describe), and artists of the sort, including a bit of a soft rock phase at the moment. However, I've been trying to update to contemporary rock (as I should being I'm only in college).
Religious and some rock. My favorite groups are Matisyahu (a Hasidic Jewish reggae singer) and Pillar (a modern rock group).

Irish Traditional, folk, bluegrass, Appalachian folk, fiddle music, traditional bagpipe music (includes uilleann pipes, and pipe and drum bands), and a select few classic rock bands, and Primus.
I avoid country and rap like the plague, same with pop music.
However, I've been known to like the occasional catchy classic like "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors, or "Funky Town" by Lipps Inc. - Because I'm eccentric like that.

Mostly classical. I like the fact that on the radio, it's played by listener-supported stations and very rarely commercial stations (no commercials! And if the piece runs over the hour, nobody gets sacked).
I have some old rock and metal CDs from the good old days but don't listen to them much anymore. When I say "metal," I mean Celtic Frost, Voivod, Testament, Candlemass, Type O Negative.
I also listen to a lot of stuff that can't be categorized, like Dead Can Dance, Crash Worship, Inlakesh, Spike Jones & the City Slickers. Sometimes I'll toss in a CD of gamelan music. It just makes the room brighter and sweeter.

Just about everything.
Not wild about opera, as it tends to be a little over the top.
Also, despite being a guitar player, Im just not a fan of speed metal players that feel that "blisteringly fast" means "good".
Malmsteen, Via, Satriani....none of that kinda stuff.
I'd have to say classical because I was trained as a classical musician (I'm a pianist), but I love Jazz, Rock, Soul, 80's and Metal.

Field recordings mixed with static, drones, feedback loops. CB radio voices fading in and out of white noise. Amplified cymbals. Rusty hinges of doors slowly opening and closing.
glacially arythmic and multi-layered polyrythmic tecno-ambient and filk. occasionally also odd things in languages i don't know from places that i've never been. music, essentially, of 'otherness'. even ram bajans and anime themes.
basicly subtract most, though not even all of any genre, but subtract 'country', 'rap', and anything you're likely to hear on clear channel, and pretty much most of what's left is ok. or to put it another way, almost everything that does NOT have a vocal, or if it does, that vocal is in a language i don't know.
the only vocals i really like are left of center agit folk and 'filk', or those in unfamiliar languages. even religeous music of non western, NON-christo-islamic-judaic beliefs, again in languages i don't know are ok.
but mostly, again, it's the really way out there, a million light years out in space away from the joe sixpack cultural mainstream mundaneness, with really odd rytnmic and tonal sturctures, that let me close my eyes and immagine the kind of world i'd MUCH rather be living in that makes up nearly all of what i prefer, musically to listen to.

....Okay the only reason I'm actually posting is because this is just tragic.
Where is the techno love? D; Seriously. Techno (which is just one genre of what I suppose you mean electronic music) is amazing. Anyway, my favorite genres are eurodance, trance, electronica, hard dance, j-rock, j-pop, punk rock, britpop, latin, "alternative," jazz, some classical, j-rap, funk, rock français. German stuff is amusing too (of course France, Germany, and the Netherlands have the best techno in the world. ;D)
Some American pop is okay. Sometimes. I despise American rap with a burning passion as well as country. Get it off my radio. ;< Religious music does not tickle my fancy either.
........And video game music.
I prefer music with lots of texture, a strong, steady, and sometimes fast beat, and preferably vocals and an interesting tune.
That makes me open for rock, pop, symphonic metal, gothic metal, techno, dance, trance, and a couple others.
I usually dislike rap, r'n'b, country, and schlager.
Symphonic power metal.

Pro Tip: Don't make multiple choice polls.
Mostly Christian variants of rock and hip hop. :)
In no particular order:
Post-rock
'alternative' hip-hop: mainly anticon label, coldcut, dj shadow, kid koala etc.
experimental electronica/IDM/indietronica: stuff from the Morr-label to autechre, boards of Canada, murcof, ryoji ikeda, alva noto, four tet, etc etc
'freak folk': Devendra Banhart, Joanna newsom, CocoRosie, etc.
music for dancing: techno (almost everything as long as it's good, but not to hard), house (I like psychedelic- and electro- but also the funky stuff they play in the cool clubs nowadays, often together with disco), disco (but not to much), and everything as long as it isn't to fast/hard (gabber) or pop-ish or trance
extreme noise: mainly merzbow
'alternative rock': sparklehorse, low, deerhoof, grandaddy, almost everything which isn't to popular or hard and can catch my attention
oters: anything form antony and the johnsons to amon tobin etc
I probably forgot half of the music I listen to, but I'm getting hungry and I could go on for ages.

Let's start with music I don't like:
- Words with music. In short, any of those songs that are all about the lyrics, which try to send a 'message'; if I want prose or poetry, I read books. (Okay. Maybe I'm just bitter because I can't write lyrics, stfu now.)
- Musical clichés -- the five minute drum solo, the weepy strings backing up old love songs, anything that refuses to acknowledge more than two or three chords.
- Refrains, especially if they recur more than two or three times, or if the verses are very short.
- Music in which two or more of the following are disregarded: rhythm, melody, counterpoint, contrast, variation.
- Music with too much rhythm: this means practically all of jazz, blues, rock, pop, metal, et cetera. I just don't like the continual beat, it gets boring after about thirty seconds.
- Minimalism and postminimalism.
- Almost anything written in the 19th century, with the exceptions of bits of Beethoven, Mussorgsky, and Satie.
- Dmitri Shostakovich.
- Country, especially after 1970 or so.
As that excludes most of known musical literature, I don't listen to very much music at all. What I do listen to tends to be either Bach or Stravinsky, with some Prokofiev and Bartók, occasionally Bernstein, Weill, Messiaen. If it's good, I can tolerate hip-hop, electronica, and a few other post-1980s genres; but I don't actively seek them out for listening.

I wouldn't say they're all that similar...ok if you like both, fine (I mean, I do too), but I wouldn't say that liking one means you'll like t'other. I just heard the Puscifer album for the first time today and it's...well, odd. Maybe a grower.
As for me, it would seem that the less vocals feature, the more I like the music. Post/math rock, post/stoner/doom/drone metal FTW. (Pelican, Isis, Rosetta, Boris, Sunn O))), Explosions in the Sky, 65daysofstatic, Mogwai...etc, etc).

I cant stand Christian music, just crappy artist trying to exploit a crowd who wont steal their albums IMO.
I second the Pandora vote, at least recently. I listen to Radiohead a bit, but also Ratatat, Dispatch, The Beautiful Girls and the odd reggae band here and there as my mainstays. I have, however, been getting into classical (I mean classical in the all-encompassing sense...I'm not familiar enough with that type of music to differentiate, really...though I'm not a big fan of Baroche, I don't think). So far my favorite stuff has actually been from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, but for some reason he makes Pandora explode so I've only heard a few pieces of his stuff and things similar to it.
I find myself really enjoying a lot of the Russian (or, well, Slavic, really) composers, though. Might be that I just like violins, though.
Oh, and to any Radiohead fans, I recommend getting your hands on a copy of Corporate Love Breakdown. It's a bluegrass tribute to Radiohead and it's probably one of my favorite albums of all time, though I do wish for vocals sometimes. Best track is their cover of You And Whose Army?, imo.

There are quite a few people here who listen to metal. I also like my music hard: death metal, black metal and thrash are common in my music collection. But that's not all I've got. Grindcore, crustpunk and other intense derivates of punk and hardcore are also to my liking, and noise & heavy alternative as well. Furthermore I'm into dark ambient, industrial, breakcore, glitch and quite a few other electronic music styles. And I shouldn't forget new wave, gothic and post punk, of course. Come to think of it, I like quite a lot of different styles of music. Hybrid and eclectic bands are also interesting, somebody already mentioned Laibach. Great band.

I don't know why, but I find your two examples of classical types amusing, and the fact you didn't provide similar examples in the other sections. Does it need more explaining than other types of music? Surely there are as many, if not more, sub-genres in popular genres than in classical.
Also, where's jazz? And 'Techno' should be replaced by 'Dance' or 'Electronic'.

Why the hell is Heavy Metal hyphenated, and then why isn't 'Metal' capitalised?
And then, why not just say "Metal", as what people usually refer to as "Heavy Metal" is the notoriously (though not always) bad subgenre known as Hair Metal... Which is quite funny, as it's neither heavy nor Metal.
I wouldn't say they're all that similar...ok if you like both, fine (I mean, I do too), but I wouldn't say that liking one means you'll like t'other. I just heard the Puscifer album for the first time today and it's...well, odd. Maybe a grower.
A Perfect Circle has Tool's lead vocalist, Maynard James Keenan as their lead vocals. And that dude's voice kicks ass. So it works for me. But I know what you mean, they do have their differences.
Also. I'm not a huge fan of Progressive Rock, but I heard this Japanese band, KBB, at Nearfest with some friends a few years ago, and they KICKED ASS. I never knew that a violin could rock so hard.

Have you ever seen them live? The atmosphere they produce is probably one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. 45 minutes of one song, played with slow-motion-esque movements while surrounded by dense fog shot through with purple lighting... Just amazing.
As to the OP, I like just about everything. I tend more toward the Metal arena, particularly that with folkish or symphonic elements to it. Favorites include Finntroll, Haggard, Korvus, Falkenbach, Windir, etc. Also a lot of what is termed 'avantgarde' metal I like quite a bit (Arcturus, Age Of Silence, Ved Buen Ende). Lately though I've been really getting into a band called Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and all of the associated bands (Faun Fables, Book Of Knots, Idiot Flesh, etc).
