Latest Gen Console

So I'm almost ready to go out and buy my latest console for gaming, but, unlike some, I can only afford one.

I've pretty much settled on the XBox 360 because I want to play Halo 3 as well as Mass Effect and CoD4. I'll probably get the extra accessory that allows it to play HD-DVDs.

What have you guys chosen?

I recently, out of the blue, was given quite a bit of money, so I've decided to get a 360. It's the by far best choice at the moment, unless there's something on another console that you just can't be without.

Things may very well change a lot in only a year or two though, so I don't dare to try to predict which console will be the one with the most and best games at the end of this generation. It could be any of the three, really.

We still have a fully functional and in-use PS2 and XBox as well.

I have basically ever game system of the last 10 years. I have a ps2, xbox, ps3 and 360 and even a ps1 in storage.

So far the 360 is outdoing the ps3 in my opinion. By the way, if you get CoD4 and halo3 lemme know, I'll give ya some multiplayer.

And Mass Effect rules.

That is all.

I'm looking at a target date of mid January for my purchase... The anticipation is killing me. The people I work with have regular Halo 3 sessions and each week I get to see screenshots from the shenanigans.

Until Gran Turismo 5 comes out I don't have a reason to get a new system, though Forza 2 is tempting me to get a 360. Luckily I don't really make enough money to go out and buy those kinds of things right now.

if you need a next generation console go for the Wii though I personally have just stuck with my PS2 and brought all the games that broke half way through in my childhood (digimon world, FFVIII)

I have a PS3 and a Wii...it pretty much covers my spectrum of gaming interests. Plus, the Blu-Ray player and Folding@Home are nice bonuses. Now, if you're more of a FPS fan, the 360 might be a better bet, but since I'm more of a platformer/puzzle fan (along with a few good PS3 FPS titles), the Wii/PS3 combo was perfect. Super Mario Galaxy, the Orange Box, and Ratchet and Clank have eaten up most of my time over the past week.

There was a segment on GT5 Prologue on the 1UP Show a few weeks back, not looking so good.

Isn't Portal great :D (Playing it on the PC). Also the chapters in HL2 with the Antlions scared the crap out of me at times.

Also do you have all [GALAXY SPOILERS] 242 Stars in yet? I only have 123 [/SPOILERS]

I could...I could fret over each individual piece and plug in, and spend time pouring through readme files configuring everything, carefully reading the small print on the side of boxes or hidden in download pages matching up all those little components up and seeing if my RAD#249o2pXP/201 will work, futzing with the controls so that 'wasd' is my control, or buying another thing to add and hoping it works with all my other things and then configuring that controller with the games and hoping that will work, and then installing all the programs and...

Or I could look on top of the box-if it says "Playstation 2" I'm in business. A minute after getting home, I'm enjoying my new game.

I don't want my gaming to appear too much like work.

At this instant for individual gaming 360 is best. PS3 will I believe surpass it in the longer term, but might take a year or two. Wii is best for casual and multiplayer (especially home-party) gaming. PC is best all round and most versatile, but I'm guesing you're looking for a console rather than a PC.

Yeah, see, console gamers like CToaN here seem to think that computers are far too hard to mess with, when they're not. Sure, sometimes it's not just plug and play, but for fuck's sake, it's not that much more complicated most of the time, and when it is the problem is much more easily solved than he would have people believe, especially since hardware almost never factors into problems anyway except in not being powerful enough, and it's not that hard to learn how powerful hardware is.

In essence, he's whining about not being able to be completely lazy.

Which you can easily do on a computer too. If anything, playing games on a computer is better because you have far more control over everything, from the way the graphics are shown, to the control schemes, to the sound volume(don't you dare tell me you've never wished you could turn down the music volume in some console game only to find out that's impossible for the most part because there is no option for it) and so forth. Most of the time it's just a quick and easy install and then start playing. Trust me on this. I've gamed on a PC my entire life. It's not complicated.

Uh, what? No they don't, not unless you're running some sort of dial-up modem and the file is large. Even then patches are usually rare, and when they are there it doesn't take that long to download them.

You seem to be missing something. You don't have to configure things if you don't want to. Having the control does not mean you are required to exercise it. With a few games, yeah, you have to, but most of the time you don't.

The simple fact is PC gaming is superior to console gaming in terms of the availability of games, the amount of control one has, and the simple fact that every advantage of a console can be duplicated and upstaged EASILY.

Oh, I see.

On a completely different note, for the record I'm not an elitist when it comes to playing games. I own a couple of consoles. I simply recognize that the PC is superior. (Not to mention I can emulate most systems on it, thus saving me the trouble of owning those systems anymore. Since I had a large catalogue of PS1 games before mine was destroyed in a hilariously ironic way, this is a good thing.)

Emulation is good, and most PC stores sell PC controllers these days that match the control schemes of the more popular consoles. The problem is getting the emulators these days. I used to have a PS2 emulator, but the damn thing had a ton of configuration and game compatibility problems and I eventually gave up.

Hence my crack about PS2 emulators earlier. Most emulators, though, are pretty easy to set up. Yes, it takes a little bit of work, but it's not actually hard. My problem is when people act like that little bit of work is somehow something dreadfully horrible to avoid and that as such it ruins the experience or something, which is entirely wrong.

But I don't use controllers. I use my keyboard. I prefer my keyboard to a controller anyway.

I take that back. Most emulators have no set-up at ALL apart from defining a control scheme real quick. The only emulator I've ever had to really set up in that sense was the PS1 emulator, and that was super easy.
