It's more than 11 hours since 2008 here, but I bet 2007 will last longer.
I am one of those people who keep lagging behind year changes. I kept on writing the year "2006" on several instances well into October 2007.

Considering Japan's ban on anything even remotely dangerous that involves gunpowder or explosives, that's not surprising.
But seriously, what're the typical Japanese New Years celebrations like?

Well, it's not that I don't like people so much as that I'm rather private and I tend to try to interact only with those I really know well. With others, I find myself lost and unable to figure out how to respond to the situation, especially since I try to avoid being rude and often end up being rude anyway. :headbang:

5 hours & 58 minutes to go here. I'm about to catch the tram up to Victoria St for some Vietnamese & then plenty beers at the pub. It's bloody hot here - 41C (over 105F), so the beers will go down a treat tonight. There's a total fire ban in most of Victoria, but they've got special permission to allow the fireworks to go ahead. :)

The Japanese view New Year's like Westerners view Christmas, it's a family holiday that is supposed to be spent with your family at home with a trip to the local shrine and temple to literally ring in the New Year (All the Buddhist temples in Japan will ring their bells 108 times to drive away the 108 devils said to inhabit men at midnight). So tonight my wife is making soba (Buckwheat noodles) that we'll eat for long life and we'll have more special foods tomorrow morning and enjoy a very quite day. The whole of the country shuts down for two or three days.
So, nope, no fireworks, no crackers, no loud parties, they're all done and over with. Japan quietly awaits the dawn of 2008.

How was the reception?
*hopes it was open bar*
I don't like parties. Too many people...it makes me uncomfortable.
Well, the last New Year party was me, my wife, my daughter (almost 5 months old at the time... she stayed awake well past mifnight, loved the firecrackers) and my best friend. We ROCKED. :D
So not all good parties have to be large.
And Happy New Year to all! There's just 12 h 39 min of 2007 left where I live, and in Kiribati much less!
parties are boring. humans are boring. making a big deal out of things is boring.
strainge and interesting, learning, creating, exploring, fitting things togather with interlocking joinery, wandering arround on forest paths and fantastical caverns and organic architecture and little people sized trains to ride through gardens and forrests, these are the things that are fun. meeting little furry creatures that like you, all good.
loud noise and big deals are just a lot of annoying crap, and being expected and expecting about big deals is just stressful.
a new year, a new chunk of time to explore. that is good thing yes.
hopefully itself will be good thing, not like crap making policies screwing up everything we've had for six years now. only six? long years of messed up crap.
a new year, a new chance for something to be different in a good way.
maybe a world more friendly to walk arround in instead of having to worship cars and putting money ahead of how things are like to actually experience.
=^^=

I have that same exact problem.
Meh, I'm in the middle of exams, tomorrow I take a day off though, so I can do a little bit partying, but not as much as I would have done otherwise, I'll probably don't see the sunrise and I'll probably won't drink a lot, but I'm sure I won't miss that much and we're having a little coming together with friends with drinks and fondue before we go to the bigger party. That will be cool because I haven't spoken to anyone for about a week now.

As NERVUN said, New Years in Japan is more like Xmas in the west, although some New Years type parties have come up.
As for the fireworks, Japan is actually much less restricted than where I grew up in Texas. You can buy some seriously good fireworks an the local corner convenience store, but only in the summer (fireworks tend to be seasonal).
None whatsoever.

so this is going to be my last post for 2007. sorry for the BLOGginess of this post, but I do use this time to reflect on the things that happened to me in 2007.
I've had many wonderful discussions here on NSG with many people. some were heated, others laughable, and many were heated and laughable but all were memorable... if my own memory wasn't faulty.
many posters left, and many posters arrived. and the cycle of making new cyber friends will continue well into 2008 and beyond.
to all of you out there, both into the new year and those still lingering in this old year...
Raise a glass for me, Have a drink for me and for God's sake, be safe out there.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o' auld lang syne
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup !
And surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
We twa hae run about the braes,

But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin’ auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin’ auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !
And gies a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willie-waught,
