I got this little surprise sprung on me this week - the USPS no longer does surface mail! WTF!!!

Of all the stupid....

Anywho, as usual when I make my return trip back to Osaka I'll have lots of stuff that would have gone in a couple of surface mail packages. Anybody have any suggestions?

Umm, what the heck is 'surface mail'?

I would imagine it means mail shipped by truck to a ship, then by truck once it gets to dry land, as opposed to air mail (which is more expensive).

Not airmail.

For international packages you usually can chose between airmail and the less pricy but slower surface mail that goes by land or ship.

Erm, forgot all about that. <<

In fact, I do. The USPS has (well, had, who knows...) a nifty little thing called Global Priority Mail Flatrate Envelopes. They're cardboard envelopes that come in two sizes. You'd need the bigger one which you get for free at the post office and then you can stuff as much stuff into it as you can possibly fit, no matter the weight, for postage of around $10. And it's airmail (well, obv.).

 Mail that goes by surface rather than air mail....

Indeed. Bloody Postal UnService. My mom told me that when I got here last Sunday, and said no way, that's got to be a misunderstanding. But it's fact. And I'm not the only one peeved off - seems small retailers, Peace Corps members, and armed services personnel are rather unhappy as well.

Usually being the operative here. One more reason to like the Japanese postal service....

As for your suggestion, last year I shipped home two boxes about 6 cubic feet each...

Do you think I could fit one of those in a flat envelope? :D

I found a suggestion of a parcel forwarding company that I'm looking at now...
