Proton MD Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said in November 2007 that the Islamic car would have a compass to find Mecca and a compartment to house a copy of the Koran.

Odd... but meh. Much more sane and practical than most things adapted to suit religion...

Doesn't seem that much more involved than dashboard Jesus or the Rosary or whatever.
Seems like just political ass kissing to me.

How do you rig a compass to always point toward Mecca? Can you make a gyroscopic compass that points somewhere besides North? Seems like the islamobile would take some islamoengineering. I suppose you could always cheat and use GPS.

Well many cars come with compasses now anyway, at least my mom's 2004 Camry did. so I guess to figure out which way Mecca is you just find where east/west (depending on your location) is. But you can just get GPS....

Seems like someone found a gimmick and wants to make a buck (or dinar) to me.

Thanks, that's very interesting!
Such a compass wouldn't work at close range, I suppose, but if you were actually in Mecca, you could just lean out the window of your islamobile and ask the first person you saw where the Kaaba was and they'd tell you.

Yeah, this is just a classic case of exploitation. Although these extra features would come in handy I'm sure, are they really... necessary? I think the most telling thing will be the price of a car with these add-ons as opposed to a normal car.
