Tourism in Norway...

I'm thinking about a late spring vacation to Europe. While in the area, I'd like to visit my wife's ancestral homeland of Norway.

What's better? Drive up through Denmark and Sweden -- probably much more sightseeing, or is there a ferry direct to Oslo, or some other coastal Norwegian city?

What's to see, once we get to the "big city" of Oslo? Her relatives are from near Lillehammer and I guess we owe ourselves a trip up there, too.

I wouldn't know, but from what I've heard the alcohol is very expensive and I also believe there were a lot of mosquito's in spring (although that could be just in Finland, because they have more lakes there.)

There's a ferry going from Copenhagen to Oslo. It's about 100 dollars for the trip, not including food and other expenses on the ferry. It takes about a day. I don't recall how long it takes to drive, but there's bridge expenses and the like, so it might end up being equally expensive, if money is an issue.

If you just want to see the keypoints of Oslo, you could probably do it in three days. Then again, I've been there a few times (since I got family there), so I might not be the best person to tell you how long to spend there :p

$100 isn't bad. There's probably some pretty good scenery along the way, too.

Any places we should see that aren't mentioned in the tour guides? I figure after the first Viking museum, we might be saturated with that. Although, going to see the Kon-Tiki would be pretty cool.

You've never 'bonked' on holiday?

I outright refuse to spend all day in the hotel room when I had to sit on a plane to get there

I will however settle for drunken mess at early hours of morning

You've never bonked outside on holiday?

I thought that was one of the main reasons people went on holiday to sunny places

Tourism in Norway? A phenomenon the Norwegians seem to like to kill by pricing themselves out of the market. More seriously; Bergen (http://www.campelen.no/common/images/bergen_bryggen.jpg), A whore on a break (http://girlwhoknits.blogspirit.com/album/2006_finished_objects/norwegian_stockings_finished.3.jpg),Norwegian culture in Texas (http://www.achp.gov/2005PreserveAmericaPresAwards/TX-HeritageTrails-NorwegianWomenandChurch.jpg)

Or take the much acclaimed Hurtigruten sail (http://www.gonorway.no/norway/sidevisning.php?id=94).

10 days seems a bit much for you, though.

Just go hiking in the Fjäll, like the locals do. I do not know where you are from, but pure nature is a wonderful experience.

In Lillehammer you could take your lady to see the ice rink in which the Team USA came and took the ice hockey 8th place in the Olympics of 1994. Glory days...

EDIT: There's A bridge (http://www.highways.dk/danmark/broer/images/bro_oresund_hojbro_fjern_500x375.jpg) fom Denmark to Sweden.... but it's like muddy Keys highway. Take the boat.

Wow! A dead ringer for my mother-in-law on the far right...

I'm starting to get the idea that Norway is expensive :)

And the only really good year for American ice hockey was 1980... I've almost forgotten the details following the game against the USSR, but I believe Finland was the last victim on the trail to the Gold Medal.

I actually love the nature in Sweden and Norway. You'd love it backpacking too. Driving through it... or with a car involved, not so grand...

But you only have so much time. Do all the touristy things now. After one visit you will come back... and then you'll gradually catch all the nuances.

Hiking and camping is something we've done since... well for as long as I can remember. The kids are not as fond of it as we are, but they're not invited on this trip.

I've got a couple friends in Sweden that want me to visit them in Kiruna. It's tempting because the fishing is great. I doubt I have the time. We're trying to keep the vacation at about 3 weeks and some of it has to be in Italy and Switzerland -- my ancestral homelands.

You could take a plane to England, take the boat from Scotland to Bergen, Norway, take the train over the mountains to Oslo, see the royal palace and the Monolith and such things, then continue up to Lillehammer by train or Bus. Or rental car. Crossing Norway like that gives you some nice views :)
