New Puppy.

Anti-Social Darwinism
28-12-2007, 08:45
My son has a new puppy in his house - an 8-week old black lab who has been named Mayhem. So, yesterday my son and daughter went to the vet's to pick her up (she had been there for bath, shots, tests, etc - a day-long event). As they were bringing her out of the examining room, a woman (older, white) approached them with usual, obligatory oohing and aahing over the cute puppy. She asked them her name as was told it was Mayhem because, as puppy, that's what she caused. The woman said "I would never name a pet such a horrible name. I would name her something like Halle Berry because she's a black female dog and should be named for a beautiful black woman!"

My kids were appalled at her manners and her suggestion for a name.

What's your take - stupidity, bad manners or just PC beyond rationality? How would you have responded?

PC beyond rationality

How is that PC? You must have a weird definition, anyway, I think it was bad manners/bad taste. I would have shrugged and said I like the name "Mayham" better. It sounds like she was trying to be friendly though, so I would have smiled back and responded nicely.

I'm always inclined to allow the elderly tons of leeway. They've usually earned it. I'd shrug, say "thanks" and be on my merry way without another thought. Besides, am I gonna change that mind? No. Is she gonna change mine? No. There's no need for pointless bickering, then.

I would have just ignored it, she just told her opinion about something trivial as a name, no big deal. The puppy probably couldn't care less about it's name.

stupid, bad manners and NOT pc.

its odd to associate the color of a dog with a human being. suggesting that a dog should be named after a specific person is a bit creepy (well except that i will some day have a dog named mudgett after the chicago serial killer) suggesting that a black dog deserves black pride is ...wrong.

I'd say stupidity and bad manners

"If you don't like the name, too bad. Now Bugger off."
OK, the second part I might not have said, depends on how annoying I found her.

I would've just laughed, probably. If she kept on and was being serious .. I would say whatever struck me at the time, possibly nothing. But if I did .. maybe along the lines of asking her how she figures it would be complimentary to Halle, and that I don't like Halle .. so why would I name my dog after her .. unless I was calling Halle a dog. Or that it's none of her damned business what I name my dog. It would depend on her attitude as to the way I would've handled it.

wait... why is it bad to call a black female dog after a black female human?

saying that the given name was horrible is bad manners.

oh and why are your kids shocked when an old lady says something weird(in their eyes i still dont get it) haven't they experienced any demented or just different people yet? you are overly protective methinks.

most people give dogs doggy names.

a black lab puppy isnt going to grow up to be halle-berry-ish

the suggestion was that a black female dog SHOULD be named after a beautiful black female person. thats kinda creepy. there is no reason why any dog SHOULD be named after any person.

should implies expectancies of normalcy, once you've outgrown the dependance on the concept of normal, then you'll understand why it doesn't matter, the old lady was ssying something you didn't expect, no reason to start thinking badly about her for that. Just rethink the concepts of 'should' and 'normal'

im of the crowd that give old people a pass on any stupid rude and non-pc thing they say.

she gets a pass but that doesnt mean her naming suggesting was appropriate.

Reply "I don't think so... it would get confusing everytime Halle visits us and we have two beings responding to her name..."

then let her stew that one over.

I would have given some sort of nice response in return while in my own head understand that she's elderly but has her own right to her own opinions. No harm was done.

And as for the name Mayhem well with the puppy being a black lab the name will go well throughout it's life. While Black Labs are very friendly, they are very hyper active and extremely playful. I have a black lab who is about 2 yrs old now and he is still extremely playful as well as hyper active. I kid around if whether they make doggie riddlin or not LOL :D

My dog Freeway, he's mostly in the back yard tearing up the yard trying to catch the lizards or bugs in the sand and everytime I walk by or he sees me he immediately lies down as if he's not doing nothing It's funny to actually see him. I'm working on teaching him the area he's allowed to do so and that's in the sand box which does have the biggest holes dug. He's a Black Lab.

It can get hard to seperate PC and stupidy sometimes, so I'd have to say both. I would have told her "You do know that not everything has to be PC right?" Of course that wouldn't be the best response but thats the way I am.

I named my boyfriends dog - Loki ;) Turned out to be a very very accurate name.

As for the lady, I would have smiled and walked off. I'm not going to start an argument in the middle of a vets over something so small.
