Anyone tried Nike+?

I'm thinking about getting the system in the next few months and am wondering what people's thoughts on it are. I've been trying to run regularly but, because I'm really a very lazy person, it is a struggle to stay motivated so soon as it warms up again I'll be looking for ways to maintain motivation. Now, I'd have to get the sportskit, nano and shoes for it if I ended up getting the system but I need to replace my missing (and probably gone) iPod and really need new sports shoes anyway since my current ones are literally falling apart as I walk in them. The community aspect seems pretty neat, actually. I like the idea of participating in online challenges and the general tracking info. would be really useful. So, any thoughts or reviews? Mind you, it'll be a couple months before I can afford all this (seems to be in the range of ~250-280 dollars) so I'm not completely against waiting for better systems to come out or waiting on a specific hardware release/software update, either.

What is this thing? Does it connect your iPod with your shoes?

I already bought myself a pair of Nike Vandals,... so I guess, it'll be sometime till I buy another new pair.

It's a thing you slip into your shoe that tracks various statistics and broadcasts them to a thing you hook up to your iPod nano as well as being able to sync with your computer. Nike+ line shoes apparently are designed specifically for the tracking device with a little crevice in the heel. There's some software stuff it does with your nano, too, I guess like hitting select plays a "PowerSong" instead of bringing up a menu (which it normally does for the nano, I think?).

I know our tour guide at Tulum, for one, won't be buying one anytime soon.

Indeed, but what does said device actually do? I can't seem to work it out from the posts.

I think it's essentially a step-counter that digitally displays number of steps taken, distance run, etc.

But instead of costing £2/$4 as they normally do it costs £150/$300 because you put it in your shoes and has the word 'Nike' plastered all over it.

Sounds like a fantastic waste of money.

Ah, right.

Sod that, you can get 'em free with some breakfast cereals.

It's a step counter that tracks your progress along a route and interfaces with an iPod...so essentially, it is a 30 dollar stepcounter, yea, but it's the software that comes with it that I'm interested in getting an opinion on.

Like I said, I'm looking for opinions. Do you know of a product that's similar and cheaper? I'd love to hear about it, especially the cheaper part of that. =p

Like I said, it isn't a question of being motivated to run. I hate running, I always have and I suspect I always will, but unfortunately it's good and easy exercise so I'm looking for ways to maintain motivation while I'm doing it instead of cutting my run short. Community challenges and public trackers seem like a good way, but I'm not against finding something cheaper.

The reason I said it'd cost me around 250 dollars is because I'd need to get an iPod nano and new running shoes, but I need to do that anyway so really the cost comes down to about 30 dollars. Maybe 50 or 60 dollars if you factor in that I'd otherwise buy a slightly cheaper mp3 player/running shoe.

Oh, god, no. Not that I'm some strange misanthropic hermit or anything, though it doesn't always sound so bad, but I really dislike running with other people. Two reasons for this, first is that running is my exercise time away from people; I do Tae Kwon Do and Capoeira, both of which require a lot of interaction with people which is fine but sometimes I want to work out and just zonk out mentally, which requires me to not have people I'm paying any particular attention to. Second reason is that I can't stand matching another person's pace but I also am too competitive to let someone outpace me and feel like too much of a jackass if I noticeably start out pacing my running partner.

And, yes, I realize I'm being difficult. But this is why I'm posting for advice. =p

It is. And Nike's running shoes are crap really. And Adidas's too for that matter. Mizuno and Asics make the best running shoes.

I love Asics, especially because there is a sport shop near where I live that sells them reasonably cheaply. Excellent running shoes.

Uh, Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66's and Kill Bills are too over hyped... oh yeah, they're not contemporary running shoes.

I'm looking at the Asics and Mizuno websites...I didn't realize Japan was especially adept at making running shoes. Weird.

Aye. I had Asics before and loved them, but now I need more heel support and I've gotten Mizuno Wave Rider 10's a couple of times.

Well, I enjoy TKD and capo. On the other hand, I hate running but I need the endurance training so, in this case, I consider myself lazy.

What about swimming?

Cheaper and more all-round exercise.

As to Nike+, it really does sound like a swindle if you need to buy a certain mp3 player and a certain kind of running shoes just to find out how many steps you've taken.

You know that guy who invented the clockwork radio? He invented shoe that could charge your phone as you walked in it.....somehow. Anyway, he never went into production because 9/11 happened and he figured people who had wires and things coming from their shoes would be assumed to be bombers. My point: In b4 that happens with Nike+

If its a good quality device, it should last longer than the shoes, $30 is not expensive to help your health.

Motivation is priceless.

The only thing that motivates me to keep running more than 10 minutes is football (I can jog/run for 2 hours).
And it costs me way more than $30/ year.

===================
on a side note, my -overwiegth- uncle has spent $1000 last months in Training lessons and miracle Diets.. to shape up.
apparently he has enough money but not enough motivation.
Now he is going to expend way more for a special weigh loss program in Hawaii.. apparently his marriage is now on the line.. I say he still got not enough motivation.
