Chocolate companies accused of fixing prices (http://www.thestar.com/News/Canada/article/288231)

Newly released court documents allege that the Canadian divisions of Nestle, Mars, Hershey and others teamed up in a price-fixing scheme in the multibillion-dollar Canadian chocolate bar market.
...
The alleged collusion is reported to have begun in February, 2002, and continued until a few weeks ago.
...
Canadians buy about $2.3 billion (U.S.) worth of chocolate and candy every year, according to the Confectionery Manufacturers Association of Canada.

Hmmm... perhaps if they indeed fix prices, do you think chocolate prices would go down? And is it possible that they are also doing this in other countries? Do you think I will share my chocolates with you? What is your favorite brand of chocolate? Am I asking too many questions?

Discuss. Chocolate.

Poll coming.

Canadians make Chocolate? Who even knew or cared? The US eats that much chocolate for a snack on a slow afternoon.

Mmm. Chocolate.

And yes, the prices would go down. On the other hand, that would probably lead to suppliers gaining less money too, which is a Bad Thing.

I'd rather not see them go down, and instead see a fair price paid for cocoa to the producers.

Oh yes, I think there was some fear with a chocolate price increase due to a strike...

Ah, here it is (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7128770.stm)...

while that sure is shocking, look at what disaster we escaped.
(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7128770.stm) I wonder how it ended.

Why are they so worried about the price of chocolate? WHat about the price of oil based products? It's costing me $500 a month to warm my fucking house!

of course you could just go and buy some budget chocolate but for some reason that always tastes...wrong

I think its tastes better when it contains stolen childhoods :)

Absolutely agreed.

The question posed in Live Aid of "do they know it's Christmas time" is obviously answered with "yes, as it's the time when they have to work their arses off the most so I can enjoy my chocolate orange".

Anyways, I like all chocolate, but dark chocolate is probably my favorite.

I've never met a chocolate I didn't like or one that was too expensive.
However, my favorites came from Moonstruck Chocolate Cafe in Chicago.

That's because it isn't real chocolate. If you look on the package, somewhere in fine print it will say 'chocolate flavored confection' which pretty much means you're eating suger infused gluton. XD

Cocoa is a drug. It's nice because it gets you bent, and however you are conditioned to it is how you like it.

I should have voted "Dark chocolate" as well as what I did vote, since that's what I like. As much cocoa as possible, with as little unhealthy cane sugar and milk fat as I can bear.

Chocolate price-fixing is insignificant compared with the petrol scam.

Cocoa is a drug. Because it brings pleasure out of proportion to how difficult it is to grow and process, the producer and the consumer get screwed by the intermediaries, whether that be heroin factories and drug dealers, or child labourers and chocolate brands.

Holy crap, that's more than I spend on rent and utilities combined!

Only about $5 more than my average costs, but still...

I voted for every poll option except White Chocolate (since there's no such thing as White Chocolate), just to skew the results. :D

I don't understand why this is called price fixing. Chocolate is a luxury, not a necessity. And I like the Hershey's Symphony, Cadbury Caramello, and a few others.

Fuck that. Buy a well-upholstered armchair and a down-filled jacket.

I am reminded of a gamer friend of mine. I visited his house, and his flatmate made me a cup of tea while I talked to a twitching furry blob, which was him sitting in one armchair, with his monitor on an opposing armchair, the whole microcosmos under a tent of blankets and his PC in there as well. If I remember correctly, he had a hatstand to keep the blankets from getting between his face and the monitor. Under a kilowatt, cosy warm!

On the downside, there wasnt' space in his cucoon for a second person. And the flatmate stole my friendship off him.

My newest favourite-of-the-month chocolate is the new Norwegian Yade chocolate.

It's dark chocolate, white chocolate and milk chocolate mixed together in a fantastic blend :)
