Stepping back from NSG

The time has come, my gentle friends, to speak of other things;
Of posts and other cabbages; of politics and kings...

Yep, I'm going to try that which is reputed impossible: to leave NSG.

I've simply been too busy lately, and trying to cram NSG into too little spare time is, ultimately, not a good idea. So I'm going to see whether I can break the addiction, overcome the withdrawal symptoms, resist the urge to post news threads whenever I come across something interesting that I want to share with you (no more threads on "obscure" countries!)... and basically just do without it.

I've been on NSG a heck of a long time. I was here for the first move to Jolt; my join date is listed here as April 2003. Maybe it's time to step back.

It's certainly been interesting. Reading posts on NSG has often been a depressing matter, causing me to continuously downgrade my appreciation of humanity... but not only. Many times, NSG has reminded me that the world is full of bigoted, ignorant, uneducated, narrow-minded people who cling to their ignorance and derive great pride from it, asserting it aggressively... as though shouting out one's ignorance and stupidity to the world were somehow the epitome of human achievement. NSG has caused me to become profoundly wary of democracy, that interesting doctrine which states that power should be placed in the hands of the ignorant, the prejudiced, the closed-minded and the stupid. Not that I oppose democracy; hopefully I've made my views on that issue clear in the past.

Having been here for so long, I would like to think I'm not completely anonymous by the time I fade away. Most of you are probably too "new" to remember the NationStates General Elections, perhaps my one tangible contribution to the general fun and debate in this part of the fora. But still, I've ambled my way into a variety of topics.

Which brings me to the matter of thanking you. Amidst the loud masses of braying fools, there have been some people here whom it has been a pleasure to exchange ideas with. Some of you -and I hope you know who you all are- have struck me as intelligent, open-minded, well-informed, curious about the world around you, and capable of objective and critical analyses despite your own strongly held views. You help redeem the human species. In some cases, you hold views which I strongly disagree with, but your intelligence and capacity for rational and well-informed debate are not in question. And this is one good thing that NSG (or rather, you) has done for me: it has encouraged me to constantly step back and take a critical look at my own views, to nuance them, to embrace complexity to a greater extent than ever, to understand the reasons why someone may hold a view opposed to my own. For all that, I thank you with the utmost sincerity.

Now, I'm going to try and avoid NSG completely - and see how long I can do that. I hope that announcing it will help force me to do so. I may still post occasionally in the main NationStates forum.

I wish you all a very merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!

See you later! These kind of games are addictive, and the communities are hard to tear yourself from.

You could just do what a lot of other people do and kill your nation.
Do the whole phoenix thing.
But no worries ... you should live life as it was meant to be lived.
...however that might be.

Well, it was nice knowing you. I hate to say it, but I hope you come back. :D

This is it. This is the drug that holds so many in thrall. The chance of meeting and interacting with - or at the least the chance to observe the comments from - minds whose views contradict your own, and yet whose rational opposition demands respect, if not actual agreement.

I must confess that I also hang around here because the gut-instinct comments of the "bigoted, ignorant, uneducated, narrow-minded people who cling to their ignorance and derive great pride from it, asserting it aggressively" regularly serve to remind me just how bad things can get if you let them slide. It's a gruesome fascination, akin to stopping to view a car crash or the like, but it's good to do from time to time just to remind yourself of what some of the rest of your fellow humans can be like.

Rather than disappearing, why not just stop "trying to cram NSG into too little spare time" and simply treat it as something to pass a few otherwise idle minutes when you have the time? Browse some threads as you drink a coffee, comment only as and when you feel that you have something that you would like to add, and even then only if you have time to spare. It works for me. :)

Bye, it's always sad to see someone go :(

It's even sadder when they tarnish my memories of them with a stupid goodbye thread.

Byee! I'll miss your threads on the politics of countries I've virtually never heard of, ya know.

And come back when the workload's a bit less!

Well, they say cold turkey is best. But, the rate of recovery from addictions is low. Good luck. See you soon.

As long as he doesn't come back a week later with a new nation and trash the people he used to pretend to like.

Not that anyone else in recent memory has done that. Nope. No one I can think of.

Au revoir...

We'll see if you manage it. You'll still come here to have a look, then one post will make you reply...and 45 minutes later you'll surface from a frenzied debate on whatever and think "Oh, bugger..."

See you around.

You were the one who kept editing French Wikipedia, right? Well, its never good to see someone go. But actually evn though so called stupidity has its plus points by simply introducing a new idea. Theres a lot great stuff here. I hope you come back. So, I bid you adieu.

It's been fun. But then, you know you're not actually leaving. Every time someone leaves, they end up bored when they've suddenly got those extra spare minutes. And you'll be lurking, until one day I say something that makes you want to explode and you'll be back.

So until then...namaste. :D

How adorable. Thinks he can leave, just like that. Don't be surprised if you find a horse's head when you wake up. (Actually, it's more likely you'll find a mess of mud and tacos. That's almost as bad.)

You were fun to talk to, I hope you find success in the real world. If you already are successful in the real world, I hope your success continues.

EDIT: While I'm here, I'd like to propose a by-law to be put in the Forum Charter. Any user who leaves must first videotape himself singing "My Way," post it on YouTube, and provide a link here. I think it will provide much needed closure.

There's one problem with making a goodbye thread when you're leaving: You sometimes get the urge to check on it.

Up and disappearing from one day to the next is better, particularly because then no one can say "I told you you'd be coming back!"
