Huckabee sailing against Republican elite.

Sat Dec 22, 2:31 PM ET-- WASHINGTON (AFP) - The spectacular rise of Baptist preacher and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, now a lead contender for the Republican presidential nomination, runs counter to the wishes of the party's conservative elite.

The Republican intelligentsia has also been assailing Huckabee, even calling him a "false conservative" and a "radical" whose ideas run counter to Republican ideals.

"Huckabee's campaign actually is a comprehensive apostasy against core Republican beliefs," said the prominent conservative columnist George Will said.

"Huckabee's radical candidacy broadly repudiates core Republican policies such as free trade, low taxes, the essential legitimacy of America's corporate entities and the market system allocating wealth and opportunity," he said.

I was wondering why Corporations have not been likely to "contribute" to his Campaign.

Welcome to America Brand Democracy, where you can only win when you have more money than anyone else. And guess how that happens? You side with corporations.

I love this. It's like corporations have a strangle-hold on the presidency and yet nobody recognizes it at all. Hahahaha...

Which just shows how in touch he is with conservative core principles.

It's almost funny how the Republicans sold their souls to those in the business of condemning souls to hell, and now they're wondering why it all turned out so badly for them.

I'd laugh, but every time things go badly for conservatives, they just turn around and make it worse for everyone else.

America really needs to discover the concept of the public good.

They have. It's defined as "that which costs me money."

Go Mike Gravel! He shows that you don't need money to be the best candidate.

You do, however, need money to win.

You can keep your brand of public good and stuff it where the sun don't shine.

He seems to favor environmental conservation, though it doesn't mention his stand on ANWAR oil drilling. Other than that, he's... well, a Southern Baptist Minister. That pretty much says it all. :p

All I know is that Huckabee has several pages on FSTDT.com.

I hope he never gets close to winning.

Him and the person who quoted
"Moreover, there is ample evidence that most of our Founders were deeply religious men who never imagined a rigid separation between religious beliefs and governance.".

Which by the way, was Ron Paul.

The candidates bash whoever is in the lead. I don't know why the party as a whole is, though.

Ooh ooh! I know this one!

It's a common marketing technique. A mediocre change can look drastic if the units are altered (say, from tens to hundredths). On the political spectrum most of the Republican candidates occupy the same region (as do the Democratic candidates, actually); but if you zoom in really, really close, they look pretty different from one another. In one or two matters Huckabee is slightly to the left of other Republicans. Inflate the graph and he's a proper pinko-commie.

As for Huckabee's rise, it's probably due to the false image of the plainspoken "average guy". Most other presidential candidates are career politicians or lawyers; people distrust both groups. Your friendly neighbourhood minister on the other hand.
