Fijians help feed Washington's hungry

FIJI's embassy staff in Washington, in the spirit of Christmas, have helped feed some 633,000 residents through funds raised by them.

They also helped pack more than 3000 kg of food for distribution to some 700 agencies that serve more than 275,000 residents in Washington D.c and who are risk of hunger every year.

Explaining the donation, Charge d Affaires Peni Lomaloma said at this time of celebration and merriment it was important to take time out to remember the less fortunate who may be going hungry during this time of feasting.

''The Embassy through its donation wants to show the people of Washington and America that Fiji and its Embassy in Washington care and want to help,'' Mr Lomaloma said.

''The Embassy plans to do more outreach activities in future as a way to build bridges between the US and Fiji and promote greater understanding between the two nations.''

The story lacks details. It says they "helped" do all this. If I donate $20 and a couple hours to a program like this then I helped too. I mean where did the funds come from? Other Americans or actually from Fiji? I don't want to sound to much like a pessimist here but really what did they do?

Good point. They may simply have coordinated efforts. It's not clear.

Having said that, I would assume the Fiji embassy would turn first and foremost to people in Fiji, and maybe to Fijian-Americans. I don't know, though.

It bothers me that Fiji needs to help take care of our hungry.

How much would it really cost to ensure every American gets enough food to live? We're the United f*cking States, we've got the money. It's time we started taking care of our people.

Well, Washington is pretty much America's Third World...considering the city proper has a population around 600,000 and the metro area 5.3 million, having 275,000 people facing hunger is pretty messed up. Not to mention they have the highest infant mortality rate in the Western world.

Let's not turn this into a pride issue. We needn't act ungrateful if a little country helps us out now and then. We're simply the most powerful, not the overseeing lord.

But yes, we should feed our entire populace.

If we do that the communists/terrorists/borg win.
Mindless rhetoric spouted by those fooled into believing those that want them to say it have their interests at heart.

My question: so why hasn't any major news source picked this up? BBC? CNN? Canadian sources? French? German? Why is it only Fiji Online and a couple of blogs?

The same reason CNN barely--if at all--acknowledged the bombing in Pakistan the other day, that the BBC ignored the Lakota secession...politics. It's all about politics.

BBC is too busy with Bishops trying to turn us into the bible belt

or maybe Tony Blair joining the catholic church

though the fact this is a charity event in the US seems to also cover the idea that this is news

We cannot. We have to accumulate debt so we can get Americans killed thousands of miles away. Anything left-over goes to Africa.

If you think it is bad now, just wait untill Hillary gets into office.

She'll be spending money on:

"Vigorous engagements" in South America.

Seeing to it that we keep the Cuban-embargo up, and prevent Americans from visiting the evil Cubans.

And making sure that any who support "terrorists" will "pay".

After all, she gets more contributions from military contractors then any other candidate running. She also has fought the Bush administration to get more money put into military research.

The worst part is, she also intends to use it. Military research itself is great (they usually have the balls to pursue things at which the civilian sector would balk), but it's always most useful to all of us when it's not used in combat and is instead released to the commercial market.

I mean, I'm all for upping R&D funding for DARPA, but the last thing we need is another idiot treating the world like a Risk board. Hillary would probably be one of the most warmongering presidents in recent history.

DARPA? I don't know...do we really want a Shadow Moses on our hands?

And Canada or any other nation would, just to make the US look good, fail to report such news? Because, we like, control their newspapers. And the BBC. And the entire universe.

Doesn't seem logical.

What credible candidate gets the least contributions from corporations?

right?

Let me guess: I am going to say I would like to see more than the one source before I decide whether it has any credence.

See, when people spoke of the Lakota secession, there was more than just one source....
