"Underground" music thread

On Wednesday night I saw Amanda Palmer perform at a club in Brisbane (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=amanda+palmer+brisbane). Best music experience of my life, made even better by her coming out afterwards and everyone hanging out together outside on the sidewalk, signing shirts and stuff, hugging people and everyone being happy.
Now, Amanda's certainly not underground anymore, but her support acts were. The Red Paintings (http://www.myspace.com/theredpaintings) are fairly well known in Australia by now, but probably not overseas (though they did the support for the Dresden Dolls Tour). They paint a painting on stage during a gig and tonight they're doing a Dr. Seuss-inspired Christmas Show that I should really be at if I wasn't tired and broke.
Even better, in my opinion, was Emma Dean (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=42941286). She did a great show, and I got her two EPs..it looks like she doesn't have a proper record deal yet.
So what sort of underground music do you know of and want to share with the world? Try and include myspace pages or some other samples.

Eugene Mcdaniels - like a black Bob Dylan...very political...he got chucked off his label in the 60s when he wrote a song called parasite which was about the settlers genocide of the american indians...it upset the president at the time and he stepped in to get his record banned
anything northern soul...here's a couple you can listen to but there is thousands
Frank Wilson - Do I love you (indeed I do)
Nolan Porter - If I could only be sure
Luther Ingram - If its all the same to you babe
Al Wilson - The snake
The MVPs - turning my heartbeat up
coming up to modern music...try out some of these
Music Soul Child - Religious
Amp Fiddler - Eye to Eye
Troubleman feat Steve Spacek - Without you
Anything by Cody Chestnutt...the guy who sang on the Roots track "The Seed" but if you want another taste try "Dream"
and finally one of my good friends from manchester...he's gonna be big this year...check him out on myspace

Most of my list is black metal or other underground metal.
Emperor (http://www.myspace.com/emperorhorde)
Tvangeste (http://www.myspace.com/tvangesteband) (amazing, epic, and almost unheard of)
Primordial (http://www.myspace.com/fallentoruin) (Irish band with strong folk influence that no one knows about)
Windir
Ulver (specifically their first three albums)
Borknagar (listen to "Colossus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L75EgBXWfuU), it's awesome)
Anaal Nathrakh (http://www.myspace.com/anaalnathrakh)
Ludicra (http://www.myspace.com/ludicra)
Sigh (http://www.myspace.com/sighjapan)
Successor (http://www.myspace.com/successor)
The Porno Pandas (http://www.myspace.com/pornopandas)
Professor Fate (http://www.myspace.com/professorfate1)
Enslaved (http://www.myspace.com/enslavedmusic)
Jotunspor (http://www.myspace.com/jotunspor)
Battlefield Band (http://www.myspace.com/thebattlefieldband) (celtic folk music)
Immortal (http://www.myspace.com/immortalofficial) (awesome cheesy cold black metal)
Apocalyptica (http://www.myspace.com/apocalyptica) (metal on the Cello)
Aes Dana (http://www.myspace.com/trueaesdana)
Wardruna (http://www.myspace.com/wardruna) (Not sure what to call this... it's not metal, but calling it folk would be misleading as well... quite misleading)
Mayhem (http://www.myspace.com/officialmayhem) The one and only... noisy black metal at its quintessence.
Bards of Fangorn (http://www.myspace.com/bardsoffangorn) (I'm actually in this one, it's folk music)
Hallowed Earth (http://www.myspace.com/hallowedearthband) (I'm in this one as well, though it's melodic epic black metal with folk and experimental influences, despite the fact that the only song up there right now is acoustic... yeah, recording takes a long time, it's frustrating work)
Hope that's satisfactory.

Burning Brides (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=11094326) Their first album reminds me of what the Stooges might sound like had they debuted in 2000.
Local H (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=6709423) Used to be on a major, but were dropped and now go from label to label making good music for the masses.
Some local punk bands I can link to:
Caustic Christ (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=15106949)
The Vacancy (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=684935)
And a couple metal bands:
Dream Death (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=7310365) Doom/sludge
Icarus Witch (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=5252863) Power

Jazz fans should check out The Love Substitutes (http://www.thelovesubstitutes.com/), a sometimes improvisational jazz-rock-thingy band. Excellent fun.
If we're talking underground bands here, then a plug for one of my mate's bands, Taking Chase (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=54657465) should slide right in there. Taking Chase are a skacore band who'll be playing at a Scottish venue near you soon. Or not near you, as the case may be.
On a perhaps more professional level (and perhaps they're too big now to be classed as 'underground'), everyone and their Auntie Mabel should listen to a bit of cLOUDDEAD (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=52396639), everyone's favourite avant-garde Jewish hip-hop MC's Dose One and Why?, and their mate Odd Nosdam, DJ and sampling god. cLOUDDEAD have pretty much disbanded now, but their albums truly redefine hip-hop while splitting fans down the middle. If your interested, check out their mother label, Anticon (http://www.anticon.com/).
Also on the hipitty-hopitty fron, Dälek (http://www.deadverse.com/) is one of the best things to hit the scene in some time.
Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-check it out.
I host shows for high school metal/hardcore/whatever bands. I'm pretty much as underground as you can get.

Nope, I'm lazy and therefore allow others to sift through the shit to find the diamonds. Smallest band I've seen (and liked) were Bedouin Soundclash back in 2005 (cos that was the first time they toured in England) and the Arctic Monkeys in the same year at Leeds, when they still hadn't come close to releasing anything and i had no idea who they were. Enjoyed both thoroughly.
Letters From London (http://www.myspace.com/lettersfromlondon) Great band. I believe they may be releasing theri first single next year. I'm hoping it's Cold Light of Morning
3bobnation (http://www.myspace.com/3bobnation)

It would obviously have to be my one-man band, Death Tweet Banana Swahili Lamppost (click) Movie, which has written and performed its own songs in such established underground venues as My Basement and My Living Room. DTBSL!M is currently pioneering its equally unique genre of Folk Japanese twelve-tone metal.
Yeah. I really don't listen to music much, and almost never go to any kind of performance -- underground or mainstream.

Recently I've been all about the black metal, so I've been listening to Open Grave, Gromm, Be Persecuted, Thorns(who aren't that underground, they gotta split with Emperor...), Black Murder, Vlad Tepes and Grim Forest.
And then there's my normal mix of skramz and grindcore and crust punk, but I gotta save some name dropping for page 2.

What qualifies as "underground"?
Good question. My local college radio station has an underground hour each day. It seems that underground is sort of experimental/pop/electro-pop in the opinion of our local DJs.
In fact, the station's playing Underground right now. Here's the playlist so far:

Anyone can listen online if they like. Odd stuff, I think, but often pretty good. :)

Rice Radio here in Houston plays some punk, metal, and local bands but its hard to pin down the name and artist. Meanwhile...I'm still looking for a Hellbent soundtrack. Mainly becuase of Nick Name, Texas Terri, and Pansy Division which are near impossible to get my hands on here. Not to mention the sheer rareity of "Queer" Punk; I so want to hear Nick Name's "I F*** Your Boyfriend." Any help out there?

Man, there's so many great Canadian acts right now. One I love for its funness and catchiness and just great canadian indie pop-iness is Two Hours Traffic from Charlottwon, PEI. Great stuff. http://radio3.cbc.ca/play/band/Two-Hours-Traffic/Heroes-of-the-Sidewalk/
Here's one song - there's lots more on that website on the Two Hours Traffic page.
Jill Barber is one of those recent crop of country-is pop-is folk-ish singer songwriters (there's many! Basia Bulat, Neko case, Sarah Harmer all Canadian nightengales in a similar vein). I have to say that I love this style of singing. Here's a nice song.
http://radio3.cbc.ca/play/band/JILL-BARBER/In-Perfect-Time/. Her bother mattew Barber is also a really good artist.
Also, I want to register my dismay that people think it's useful to post 50 of their favorite bands. Come on. We all like to try new stuff, but the whole point of recommendations is to choose carefully, not to overload.
