Well the WTO has spoke on online gambling. Was a bit ago the fed's banned online gambling. Seems to me that the WTO says otherwise. Now I agree that it was a dumb law. However where do they get the balls to penalize the government for laws it passes?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7156394.stmThe WTO doesn't penalize governments, it allows its member states to do so.

EDIT:
Whoah! It even says so in the first paragraph:
Antigua and Barbuda was awarded the right to impose sanctions that target US services, copyrights and trademarks.

True. It would be odd for us Americans to be on the other end of sanctions. And yes, it is a stupid law. Actually, a lot of the federal Gov't is stupid laws...

At least the Feds aren't getting away with this stupid law. It was only made to benefit the mortar-and-pestle casinos against internet competition, after all, and to decry this law is to decry their monopoly (legal barrier to entry.)

the pressure that the WTO can bring to bear is in sanctions such as allowing antigua/barbuda to overlook US copyright laws without facing international sanctions (just an example, i dont think antigua has any such plan.) or denying the US its own suits against other countries like china.

if the US gives the back of its hand to trade agreements that they agreed to a decade or 2 ago, the WTO can allow other countries to give the US the back of their hands.

on balance i think the US has gotten more than its given under the WTO and should stick to its agreements now.

Not really, Vegas (Which would be the major corporation casinos) stayed out of it for the most part, probably because a few of them were running the online games or were thinking of going that route.

well, if you look at the history of the "law", which i put in quotes because it was rejected by congress and tacked onto the end of the port security bill at the last minute, bill frist, who was singlehandedly responsible for its passing, received very large contributions from the brick and mortar casinos--primarily harrahs i think.

it would be very much to the US and the US gaming industry to have legal online gambling. it would bring in virtually ALL the online gaming business in the world, provide tax money, and allow the US to regulate the industry so as to protect US citizens from being taken advantage of.

it would be fabulous to be able to play poker at harrah's online site and use player points at its brick and mortar casinos.

sigh

Forbes says otherwise.

U.S. gambling resorts and casinos like MGM Mirage and Harrah's Entertainment — which is reportedly being eyed by a private-equity consortium — may be the few to profit from the new law, along with the horse-racing industry, lotteries and fantasy sports operators, who have all been carved out of the new law.

Why shouldn't international organizations have that power?

The ban on online gambling is retarded. This country needs to wake up and smell the napalm in the morning.
