Humour linked to testosterone?

Actually, come to think about it this might not be so surprising. Isn't LG always going around and giving kicks to the groin. Perhaps we should neuter LG in the interests of world peace.

... anyway, what would you say if you saw a doctor unicycling down the street?

Seems like he just found that testosterone is linked to aggression and the humour is just a vehicle for the aggression

It could be that humour is an alternate outlet for aggression.

Young teen gets aggressive and rebels against society. Society crushes his spirit. Young broken man now resorts to snide humour to release pent up aggression.

I seem to remember reading somewhere years ago that in general a good comedian or comedienne usually has suffered or suffers from depression. Meh.

It's not a brilliantly put-together article, and what D-F said sounds quite possible to be the case, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to find out that the link is true.

Meh, most funny men I know are not aggressive in the least. The aggressive men (albeit very few) I know aren't funny. And what about the types of humor that doesn't include making fun of others (like puns etc). Most people I know, including myself, would probably cheer if a professor of ours started unicycling (although we would also think that he was trying to hard to be "cool", but only a little bit).

also:

He suggested men might respond aggressively because they see the other unicycling man as a threat, attracting female attention away from themselves.

wtf?

Seems to make sense, but he forgets, some women can be just as snide and irritating, and not all men with good sense of humour are aggressive.
Seems to group you into, good humour=aggressive.
no humour=weak.
Which is of course wrong, but it does make a few interesting points.

I missed the part where he defined humor, established that unicycling was funny, and proved conclusively that snide comments are in fact jokes.

Maybe he demonstrated anecdotally that being mean is linked to testosterone?

I'd believe that. Especially since it seems that there is a trend of comedians suddenly offing themselves.

I think the humor shows that his spirit has not been crushed. It's still active. Crushed spirit sounds, to me, like you're talking about someone who just gets depressed and drinks until he falls asleep.

He addresses the fact that female comedians are hugely outnumbered by male ones.

And women who are snide and mocking tend to become placed as leaders in their cliques. It's part of how they control their social network. And leadership in women is linked to testosterone too.

You seem to be limiting your definition of aggression to physical displays or angry outbursts.

The scientist is using the word more broadly as the urge to establish oneself in the social heirarchy. He's saying that men tend to use it to bring others down and elevate themselves. Which would mean that men who are funny are just as aggressive as men who use braun, they just channel their aggression into a form that plays to their strengths.

It also explains why women so consistently rate "sense of humor" as their number one attractive trait in men. It demonstrates virility without them having to be so crass as to admit things like "nice body" or "fat wallet,"

Yeah, that's about accurate. It takes a certain kind of person to laugh at everything.

Edit: Also, it's pretty universal for art. There's a saying that says something like "You must suffer for your art".

Well, since the article was talking about aggression being channelled into humor, perhaps it has something to do with your aggression being channelled into posts like this one.

I've got two words for you: FUCK. YOU...
...you stupid fuckwad...

...Yes, that's right. I called you a fuckwad. Deal with it. You seem to be happy to tell others to do the same.
