It is the National Enquirer, so grain of salt and so on, but they're set to run a front page expose on presidential candidate John Edwards claiminmg he's been having an affair for 18 months and the woman is pregnant. Even if it proves false, this could be the first derailment of the campaign. :(

How can you derail the Edwards' campaign?

You can only derail a campaign if the candidate might somehow win.

Man - I hope this is a false accusation, not that I care for John Edwards' campaign but because it would really cement my low opinion of politicians.

I have no qualms with affairs, they happen, but to run for President while having one, though not unprecedented, is simply monumental stupidity.

To think that such a high ratio of stupidity resides in politics distresses me.

My theory is that to be in politics takes an inordinate amount of ego and that this ego blinds politicians to such stupidity, while also making them prone to having affairs with anyone who strokes that enormous ego.

It's inherent in politics I feel.

I concure. I don't think it's limited to affairs of the heart either - affairs of state are also prone to ego blindness. Most mistakes, in fact, are rooted in the ego.

Wow, another inane right-wing non-issue to try and derail the campaign from the real issues.

I have thoughts on competitiveness/ego/leadership and their effects on society whereby a small percentage of ultra-competitive people dictate to the majority and that this is where all forms of politics, no matter the ideal, fail because we have no system for keeping ultra-competitive, essentially ego-driven, people in check.

No matter the political ideology, its leader is most likely highly competitive and this makes all political leaders essentially the same.

Their view might be right for the times, and we call them successful, or wrong for the times, and thus unsuccessful, but that view is rigid rather than flexible due to their inability to deviate from their own opinion, due to their ultra-competitiveness.

This is not well-expressed but remains a central problem I feel humans are both equipped and required to overcome.

True equality won't be possible until we do, nor will war, environmental damage or other.

Be the Tao :)

Over Thanksgiving, Bush ordered all the military-reserved airlanes opened for civilian traffic to clear congestion, and one of my lefty friends pointed out in an e-mail, "Wait a minute: aren't we still on 'Yellow Threat' for terrorist attacks?"

AF, honorable mention for cross-thread joke. The others are quotable quality.

I feel honoured to have my little joke among such company. I retire with a warm sense of comradeship and the makings of a hangover.

I find it funny how the headline is that a scandal that may or not be happening could wreck his campaign. Not that he's allegedly having an affair, but that allegedly having an affair can wreck his campaign.

When I was really little, I'd see the Weekly World News in supermarket news racks and not realize it was fake.

I spent so many nights crying about the end of the world or having nightmares about Satan appearing in smoke.

The National Enquirer?

I'd sooner trust Fox News.

You should trust FNC. It's infinitely more reliable than, say, the New York Times or the Washington Post, let alone CBSNBCABCCNNMSNBC.

And the Enquirer has a pretty good track record for not being successfully sued for printing incorrect stories.

We'll see how this works out, but the Breck Girl may be heading for Gary Hart's penalty box :D
