The government of China executes the former head of its State Food and Drug Administration.
Good, ol' China, always with the executions...
The wording is a bit unclear - does this mean that they fired him or killed him?

Yeah. Not as good as the old days, though. That whole 'death by a thousand cuts' method, in public... can't think of anything quite that gruesome. Hats off to the Chinese. :p

Hey, give some credit to us Europeans too! The Italians were pretty creative, I hear.

They killed him.
If it's the case I'm thinking of, I arrived in China the day after. Those nice people at the hotel had put an English language version of the People's Daily in my room, and it was the top headline. Apparently, he had turned a blind eye on lax application of security standards, which resulted in eleven deaths. If I remember correctly.

Redefines 'fired' eh?
"Look Bob, It's just not working out. There have been a nunber of complaints about your work."
"I can do better. I've just had some personal issues to work through."
*shifts uncomforably* "Well, we've decided to move in another direction. Sorry, Bob."
"But I--"
*BLAM!*

that's pretty much the case, but one can't help but feel sorry for him. He was basically a scapegoat. Safety standards are notoriously bad in China, and a lot of the problem lies at the feet of the government who expect and force producers to sell at set levels. Rising commodity prices and/or just plain greed result in producers using cheap fakes and cutting corners in their food productions. the PRC pretty much doesn't give a toss as long as the food stays cheap.
With people dying (and it was a lot more than the officiall 11 btw) and - more importantly - overseas finding fault and recalling, the PRC had to show they were serious about their Health standards. In their mind, the best way to do this was to blame someone for it and execute them.
Problem 'solved'.

Whoa. The fuckers. It's bad enough if you're the "alibi guy fired" while the rest of government down to local honchos is corrupt and happy to accept or even further the death of thousands of people in things like workplace accidents because of non-existent workplace safety, but to be the "alibi guy executed" really takes things to a whole new level.
China needs to grow the fuck up.

Yes, exactly. There's nothing like killing a scapegoat to say "This issue has now been resolved. We can forget about it and move on." While maintaining the root causes of the problem. :(

Actually the execution was due to foreign pressure to do something about it. The fact is right now china is in the middle of forming its own version of an FDA, remember it didnt HAVE one until recently. Right now they are going through the same kinds of things all us industrialised nations went through. Of course the fact is, this is china...you commit a crime expect nasty punishments. One thing always remains constant. No matter the government china always remains the same. The current administration can be compared to the Tong period of Warlords ruling the country. This lasted for around a hundred and fifty years, then fell apart under its own corruption.
This then resulted in the formation of the ming/qing dynasties, which stand as testaments of good government and civilisation. Our own standards and regulations for health and safety, as well as government exams are all borrowed from heavily by the example we had from those dynasties. With china, rather then going on with reactionary ways to deal with them, its best to simply wait and watch. After all if history shows anything its highly unlikely they will come pouring forth from their borders to conquer vaste tracks of land anytime soon. So if they want to kill a few corrupt officials i say, let them. In my opinion we should kill corrupt politicians and officials in our nations too, off hand. That might actually give us some honesty in government.
