What would you do if didnt need to work?

Wanna knows
17-12-2007, 13:12
When i think about my own goals in life and where I'm heading, and the reason why?
It makes me wonder what would i do if i didn't need to work, if all my needs where cared for, what would i do then?

I know i would want to learn more and seek answers to all questions i got and probably helping out if someone/somethings needed it...

What would you do?

I would do exactly what I'm currently doing - wasting my time on the 'net.
With my intertubes I don't need a purpose in life.

I put up a poll to see the trends, you can submit multiple answers.

I probably forgot some relevant alternative, but, here it goes anyways.

So would I, except I'd spend even less time wondering whether I should be doing something else.

I'd go batshit insane in about two weeks. I hate taking vacations because I get bored and have to work. Can't just sit around, I've got a vacation to take and about a month's worth of PTO time here at work waiting.

I enjoy the occasional bouts of laziness, but that could never be a way of life for me.

I would find a way to entertain myself; which means entertaining others. I might try to start my own television show. YOu know, local cable access and internet television and build from there. It certainly wouldn't be easy. I'd have to get over some of my own fears and allay some of my wife's(she's a very private person). But I would LOVE a more stable audience for my antics. Like I have here.

I always wanted to build my own fun house. It'd be practically a theme park, and have a lot in common with the old fun houses of the early 20th century before insurance companies and litigation killed them. If money were no expense, I would renovate one of the old mill buildings that sit empty and virtually forgotten in this and (I'm assuming) other parts of the country. They're monstrous brick buildings the size of several football fields and five or more stories tall that are almost completely unused. That offends me. I imagine the sort of things I could do with such a building if I had the money.

I would definitely need something to do. A bored goofball is a dangerous thing. :)

Masturbate constantly.

And an entertained one isn't?

An entertained one has probably just finished wreaking havoc in some way, and thus isn't dangerous anymore. At least, not until it's bored again.

I'd love it. I'd study EVERYTHING starting with art history, history and at least 2 new languages (Russian and French +enhance all those I've studied before). I'd paint, take and develop bw photos, shoot and edit videos. I'd build a car shed and garden (our house project is not quite finished yet.) I'd spend a lot more time with my friends and especially with my brother's two kids.

And if I'd still have some time left I'd consider buying a horse.

We're tiny, we're toony,
We're all a little looney,
And in this cartoony,
We're invading your TV!
We're comic dispensers,
We crack up all the censors,
On tiny toon adventures
Get a dose of comedy!

So here's Acme Acres,
It's a whole wide world apart,
Our home sweet home,
It stands alone,
A cartoon work of art!
The scripts were rejected,
Expect the unexpected
On tiny toon adventures
It's about to start!

They're furry, they're funny,
They're Babs and Buster Bunny,
Montana Max has money,
Elmyra is a pain!
Here's Hamton and Plucky,
Dizzy Devil's yucky,
Furrball's unlucky,
And Gogo is insane!

At Acme Looniversity we earn our toon degree,
The teaching staff's been getting laughs since 1933!
We're tiny, we're toony,
We're all a little looney,
It's tiny toon adventures,
Come and join the fun!

And now our song is done!

My top 3 options would be:
1. Start a business around the most crazy yet potentially profitable idea I can come up with. Act eccentric to make people think I'm a mad business genius that can pull off anything with a profit. (If the scenario includes a fortune.)
2. Try to get my name remembered like Watt, Ohm, Ampere and all the other scientists who got something named after them. (I'd have to study a bit more first but I'd have plenty of time for that.)
3. Volunteer work for some charity to make kind of a career out of helping some good cause.

I used to think I could spend a whole life wasting time if given the chance but a period of unemployment taught me that after a while it is depressing to not do anything useful, it makes you feel useless and worthless.

As I have actually experienced this, I would apparently sit on my ass all day playing video games, going on the internet, and laughing and becoming fat.

I would also completely lose my meaning in life because I'd not be doing anything to help people. That's why I'm going into the Navy(I'll be talking to the recruiter at the end of March 2008) to get started on that.

If I didn't have to work:

I'd throw extravagant parties and then refuse to attend them.
I'd travel the world, meet all the greatest political figures currently alive, and then I'd punch them in the face, because someone really should do it. Then I'd urinate on the graves of those who are deceased, because someone really should have punched them in the face while they were alive.
I'd write a 1,000 page epic about someone who writes a 100 page novel about someone who writes a 10 page short story about someone who writes a 1-page poem about the first man to commit a word to the paper.
I'd live in the wilderness, grow out my hair and tear my clothes. After many years, I'd return, right down all the visions I'd had, and then have the work published postmortem.
I'd think of more things to do.

I don't know, probably do for fun the stuff I'd normally be doing at my job.

That and go to the opera/theatre, host parties, build a nice collection of tailored suits, maybe travel, cook, read, learn a language or two, collect wine, art and antiquities...pretty much do all of the things I'm interested in now but need the money from a job to actually enjoy.

If I didn't need to work I would continue to work and make money, though I might choose to work in a field based on enjoyment of the job rather than how much it pays.

The meaning to my life is to make money though, even if I don't intend to spend any of it, I am a savings whore so I would definitly keep working.

Same thing I'm doing now -- work. But, you know, career work, not job work.

I'm an artist. That's my career -- what I am, what matters to me. I exhibit work, get press now and then, and sell a few pieces a year, but I don't make enough off it to pay rent. So I get "day jobs" (musician-speak for jobs they did when they weren't playing gigs in clubs). When I get enough money in the bank, I quit the day job and just do art for as long as I can, until the money runs out. Then I get another job. I haven't had to work for, oh, a bit over a year now. It's great!!!! :) I've been doing nothing but work!! ;)

Recently, I came up with an idea that might let me commercialize my work enough to generate income enough to need only part time day jobs from now on. If that works, I will be very happy. But I will mostly likely have to get another job of some kind next summer, which will suck, but only be temporary.

I retired 6 years ago at the age of 34. I substitute teach a few days a month just for kicks. I play alot of video games and buy alot of electronic gadgets. My current favorite is the Roomba. I can not work and STILL not vacuum. I have friends over almost every day. I wake up when i like and go to sleep when i like. Every day is like a Saturday. I sometimes even lose track of what day of the week it is because it just doesnt matter. Life is good.

i don't believe anyone, in their very most inner root true self, ever wants to not be creative. bypassing gratuitous uncreative productivity that often interferes with and impeeds doing so would be, as i see it, the best of all possible things.

even those who don't yet realize it, we'd all become 'artists' of some sort. simply out of the bordem of not doing so, partially, and partially because that's our intrinsic nature, what makes the 'human' species what it is.

i mean a lot of people will deny this at first, largely because there's the inertia of a history of coercing each other into doing so.

but the freedom to not kiss hierarchal ass is the freedom to create, and all but the very very few, would sooner or later, find themselves in some way doing so.
