That doesn't even come close to "Climate catastrophe", which is Germany's word of the year, and neither can touch Switzerland's "Death tourism."

Not that I in any way support this. Tssk.

"Death tourism"? What on Earth is that? Going to Switzerland to end it all?

You're actually right. Sterbetourismus, "death tourism" is the practice of going to Switzerland to be euthanized.

Not much of a laughing matter, and quite serious (and widespread) a discussion here in Germany: Assisting someone in their suicide (e.g. by supplying them with a deadly pill) is legal in Switzerland, unlike in any of its surrounding countries, and there's one organization in particular who makes it their purpose to aid people from all those countries to come and cross the border into Switzerland and be administered their "relief" there. "Death tourism" is a moniker for that practice usually employed by people who oppose this.

The organization who's most known for this in Germany is EXIT (link here (http://www.exitinternational.net/)).

ETA: Oh, lol. I've always only been to their German website and I've never realized what was on the international version I just linked to (bold mine):

Based in Darwin, Exit International operates internationally

Ah. I see. That would indeed be controversial.

The term "death tourism" is particularly misleading and trivialising, then.

"Death tourism"? What on Earth is that? Going to Switzerland to end it all?Yup. Dignitas, a Swiss organization that helps with mercy killing and euthanasia (voluntary) organized meetings with Germans that wanted to put an end to their suffering. Since it's illegal in Germany, and not in Switzerland, a new type of tourism was spawned. I was thinking about calling it "dying tourism", but it appears "death tourism" simply works better at getting the meaning across.

Jeez, I forgot about Dignitas/Dignitate. Let's link to them, too (http://www.dignitas.ch/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=117&Itemid=166).

And the English language is dealt a crippling blow. I'm all for leetspeak, but I'm not for leetspeak being officially recognized as actual English. I can't wait until some obnoxious little shit argues with his English teacher over this. *sigh*

Alls teh English T-chrz think we r ebil cause now w00t is teh word of the year, and we will tell them 2 check teh Wiki! ZOMG!!!!

But in all seriousness,it's not a real word with the zeroes.Woot is a interjection. w00t is not. If I was an English teacher, I wouldn't accept OMG,WTF?!? in my papers unless in a dialouge between two characters. SO I guess they did it more for fun. But if you think about it I doubt RAM and harddrive would have been accepted 20 years ago, so you know, langyage evolves.

Read the second sentence of the article. Winning "word of the year" means nothing to the actual status of the word in Standard Edited American English

Dictionaries record meaning; they do not define or approve it. If a word is being widely used, it should go in the dictionary. Inclusion does not confer legitimacy.
