Flying: carry-on music stand?

Hm, so, I'm wondering if it's okay to have a carry-on music stand for flying passenger airlines.

I mean, I've seen people with Guitar Hero guitars in their carry-on; granted it's not exactly the same thing. I suppose a metal folding pole with sharp points could be construed (and used) as a weapon...but I'm packing light and plan on having carry-on luggage only.

It looks KIND OF like this:

Not exactly, but it's a wire folding music stand (you get the idea anyway)...

Has anyone done this recently, know if it's okay?

You should be good...I'd be surprised if they didn't let you carry it on...

Okay, cool.

It doesn't fit in my suitcase so I'll probably just carry it in its own case, which might look like cause for alarm, so I wanted to make sure.

It's not on the TSA list of prohibited items, but then, circuit boards weren't, either.

Why not call and ask? If you show up at the airport and they decide they don't want you carrying a metal pole with potentially sharp thingies, they'll toss it in the hold and crush it, or confiscate it. You might want to ship it whereever you're going, instead.

Ask a musician friend who carries these things around regularly. They could tell you.

How dare you even suggest anything, I prefer not to be stabbed in the chest with a music stand by a muslim thankyou.

The chance of them letting you carry that on is between slim and none. Unless the whole thing folds up into a small rod that fits in a handbag.

well i have had occasion to look at the list of banned items recently and there was no "folding music stand" on the list that i recall.

it still would have to fit the size requirements for any carry-on. that means that folded up it cant be longer than.... 22"... (youd have to look online to be sure)

better to put it inside a carry-on than to carry it bare

better yet to put it into checked luggage

Just a question out of curiosity: do you really need it where you're going? I have no idea where you're going or for how long you're going for, but assuming it's somewhere w/in the US and not for too long (no 6 month trips to Bora Bora I presume), will you really miss practicing from a real stand as opposed to a makeshift one?

I don't know about his exact model, but a normal music stand will fold up to a size of less than one foot long.
