Which countries would you like to visit?
Countries I've already been to: France (country of birth), England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Vatican, Sweden, China, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Cuba.
I'm seriously thinking of going to North Korea this summer. Having been to the South, it would be interesting to compare. To visit a country which is (fortunately) unique, and where few tourists go.
Other than that, countries I'd like to visit include
* Bhutan (just as closed to the outside as North Korea, but it gets far less media attention)
* Tuvalu (or other Pacific Island nations other than Fiji, where I've already been)
* somewhere in Central Asia, probably Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan or Kyrgyzstan (countries which rarely get media attention, and where few tourists go)
* somewhere in sub-Saharan Africa, possibly Mali, Senegal or Kenya.
The country I'm least likely to visit is Somalia, for rather obvious reasons. (Although, astonishingly, there are hotels in Mogadishu (http://www.hnasah.com/), and an international airline that flies there (http://www.daallo.com/). The Economist has a brief article on tourism in Somalia (http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=2482161).)

* Bhutan (just as closed to the outside as North Korea, but it gets far less media attention)
I remember seeing a couple of stories about Bhutan in the British press during the last year or so_
1/ The king promised his people greater democracy, but apparently there were public demonstrations against that suggestion by people who trusted him (on the basis of his behaviour so far, and that of his ancestors since the kingdom was established during the 19th century) a lot more than they felt they would be able to trust a bunch of elected -- and, they suspected, probably opportunistic -- politicians.
2/ The king (or some government that he'd set up) banned the sale & use of tobacco, but smugglers continued bringing it in from India anyway.
(And yes, before you ask, I do know about the Nepalese-descended minority who have been denied full citizenship there...)
The elections in Bhutan will be on December 26th, apparently, paving the way in theory for a constitutional monarchy. The Nepalese-descended minority probably won't get a say. We'll see what happens in a couple of weeks.

Of those listed in the poll, I would love to visit Malawi. The locals are said to be among the friendliest people on the continent, hence the country's nickname "the Warm Heart of Africa." Plus, the national parks have lots of cool wildlife to see.
Most of all, I want to visit the Philippines, because my g.f. lives there. With any luck, I'll be able to go there within the next few months.

Not so much, but you can only travel through a government-owned tourist agency (with a compulsory guide, IIRC), at the price of $200 a day.
* somewhere in Central Asia, probably Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan or Kyrgyzstan (countries which rarely get media attention, and where few tourists go)
Most of those countries, barring Uzbekistan, have little to see. Although, it might be fun to see all the Niyazov statues in Turkmenistan before they're taken down.
* somewhere in sub-Saharan Africa, possibly Mali, Senegal or Kenya.

Unfortunately, the list of countries I would never consider visiting is far longer than the list I would want to see. And I'm not just counting the war-torn Afircan countries and the whack-job-run Islamic countries, either.
After seeing "Brokedown Palace," I vowed never to visit Thailand. The rest of southeast Asia is pretty unlikely as well.
I don't understand the allure of France, to be honest, and after they disinvited my brother's graduating class from visiting for a theater performance, I decided it was off the list of places to go. They went to Scotland instead, and frankly, I'd go there.
From what I read about the Philippines, it's a little dirty, and men who walk the streets without significant others are constantly petitioned to hook up with prostitutes. I'll pass.
I've wanted to visit Japan for a while now, but the expense and the fact that it seems like everyone in Japan smokes (I have never picked up a cigarette, and my wife is allergic to cigarette smoke) is a bit discouraging. The less populated areas of the country are more encouraging, although I'd have to bone up a lot more on my Japanese.
The truth of the matter is, though, that I'll probably never leave the country again, or even my own crummy home state. Not for lack of desire, but for lack of a chance to do so. Arg.

Yes, and they only allow a few thousand tourists a year into the country. Sounds a lot like North Korea in that way.
I'm sure it would be fascinating, but the expense would be a problem. :(

I do seem to recall coming across a web page once by a man from Hong Kong who had visited Somalia as a tourist in the late 1990s. He said the hotel provided armed bodyguards (for a fee, of course).

They do, but I wouldn't visit Myanmar, since I don't want my tourist dollars going to the junta. And definitely not Laos, which has an absolutely barbaric, genocidal government. Viet Nam definitely, Thailand most likely, Cambodia possibly.

I'm sure it does. Unfortunately, I'm told, by folks who have been there, that Thailand is exceedingly dirty and that the local shop owners charge foreigners higher prices for goods than natives (i.e. putting a price in Arabic numerals and then a lower one in Thai numerals.) Throw in the AIDS rate, the drug trade, and the fact that the country's government was recently overthrown, and it's a no thanks from me.
I live here, and I don't think I'd ever want to live anywhere else.
In any case, we're the world's n°1 tourist destination, so we can afford a few people not having us on their list. ;)
Again, I'm sure it is very high up on the tourist destination list (though I can't imagine why, say, Italy isn't higher. Then again, I'm partial to Italian food.)
In 2002-03, the U.S. got pissed off at the French government for not supporting the Iraq war. That's all well and good, and it has nothing to do with why I'm sour on France. It was the French response that upset me. They took their frustrations out on American high schoolers who were visiting and told them they couldn't come. Because we all know that the right way to get back at a government (or, more accurately, a bunch of right-wing assholes who throw around names like "Freedom fries" and "Cheese-eating surrender monkeys" and pour perfectly good French wine into sewers) is to take it out on high school kids who had nothing to do with it. That's a little immature.

I've actually never been to Denmark but totally would like to. Have been to Bolivia and it was brilliant. Very much want to go again.

I'd love to see Kazakhstan's steppe.
And while I'm there I'd just keep going, see the Taklamakan and the Gobi Desert and Mongolia.
Other places I would love to go:
The Ennedi Pleateau and the Tibesti Mountains in Chad/Libya.
New Zealand would be nice.
Iceland.
Easter Islands.
Definitely Death Valley again, as well as Canyonlands & Arches Nationalparks in the Southwestern US.
And, as mentioned above, back to the Southwestern Bolivian Altiplano, and this time over the border into the Atacama.

Not in your poll, but it's in your OP, so I'd say Bhutan.
So far, the only foreign countries I've seen are Italy and Greece. It's funny that Canada is only a few miles away from my home and I've never set foot there. I've been in Canadian waters though. I've done a lot of traveling in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and a little bit of Kentucky. I've been to Florida and Nevada as well.
I really have a strong desire to see more European countries, especially France, Spain, England, and the Netherlands. I don't really think I'll have the money to return to Europe anytime soon though. I'd love to see it all. Iceland has some special allure for me as well.
I want to visit China, South Korea, and Japan really badly. I especially want to see Hong Kong and Tokyo. I want to visit Singapore and Thailand as well. New Zealand is also on the list.
Really, I think I would jump at the opportunity to visit most places that have stable governments in place. There are some places I would avoid though; I have a disinterest in Africa and I don't think I would feel comfortable visiting the Middle East as an American. Sadly, I'll probably never get to visit the places I want to see most so I can't really waste my time and money on places that don't interest me or have a recent history of instability. There needs to be at least one McDonald's too in case I wimp out and need some good, old-fashioned, artery-clogging goodness.
I'd go to all the countries in the poll.

The closest I've come to that is flying over the Gobi Desert (during a flight from Paris to Beijing). It was the second most amazing thing I've ever seen from a plane. (The first was the Fiji Islands from above.)

If you go to St. Vincent and the Grenadines (which I highly recommend) I'd avoid the hotels or resorts. The best way to travel the islands is by hiring a sailboat out of St. Vincent. You can then sail between the islands, shop at the little stores and eat locally (or you can opt to go to the hotel restaurants, if you're more comfortable being a tourist.) Not a good place for recreational drug use, if you're into that kind of thing, but wonderful sailing, snorkeling and people.

Try Gabon - lovely people, nice landscape, it's French-speaking, and not too expensive!
You're joking, right? Gabon is extremely expensive. Libreville is among the most expensive cities in the world.

Cuba.
I'm sorry man, but your poll is lacking. A bunch of third world nations with Denmark thrown in?
10 poll options. Over 192 countries. I selected 10 at random from all parts of the world. Every continent, every region.

Been to many countries outside my home nation. Canada and Mexico for starters and All over Europe. Lived in the UK for a period of time, Germany and the desert of Saudi Arabia. Been to a large part of the Caribbean and a few Central American nations with a stop in Colombia. Been to Morocco(enough to count as a couple years.) Algeria, Tunisia, Malta, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Egypt, Kenya and South Africa. Been to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq and Bahrain. Japan, china, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. This has all been done over 25 years time.
The area I would really like to explore is South America. Want to spend a few months just going to different places. Maybe even take the cruise to Antarctica.
I have been to:
US (place of birth/residence)
Canada*
Australia
UK (England, Scotland, and Wales - lived in Cambridge for 2 years)
Ireland
France
Italy
Vatican City
Germany
Austria
Czech Republic
Switzerland
Greece
Spain
Denmark
Sweden
Estonia
Russia
Finland
Mexico
Belize
Japan
Israel
West Bank*
*- simply cut through to get somewhere else. For Canada, we found that it was cheaper to fly from Vancouver to San Francisco to Sydney than it was to include Seattle (place of residence) on our itinerary. For West Bank, my Israel tour cut through the West Bank en route from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea.
And I'm only 19.
I'd like to visit Canada for real, Jordan, New Zealand, Iceland (specifically, the EVE Fanfest), Egypt, and any South American country, just so I can add South America to my list of continents.
To tell the truth, actually visiting every continent within my lifetime is looking like a reasonable goal for me. Slightly less reasonable is my goal to get off this rock and check out Mars.

Gawd! The poll sucks hard.
I'd rather visit some REAL country, like Germany, Belgium (maybe soon 'Walloon region' and 'Flemish region'), Sweden, Italia, France and Switzerland.

And there were the people in El Salvador, Denmark and Nauru -who, after all, each have a government, citizenship, a defined territory, history and an interesting culture- thinking that their country was in fact a "real country". They never realised that the sole criterion for a "real country" is judgement by some random person in the Internet so ignorant that he would probably struggle to find Malawi on a map.
I'm not sure I should even bother, but, for your information, WYTYG has been to Bolivia, and loved it. Someone else was saying they had been to St Vincent & the Grenadines, and highly recommended it. All countries receive tourists - generally people who are intelligent and educated enough to recognise their appeal.
Oh, look! "Unreal" countries! Surely nobody could ever want to go here...

Clever. ;)
It's in Ethiopia, a country I'd very much love to visit.
Oh, I admire that in you. A travelling man, nice!
I envy that you've been to Holland, Norway and Monaco!
:D
You do get around yourself, it seems...
I'm going back to Amsterdam next year, and I might be dropping in on Turkey too. And hopefully Japan soon :)

As to where I've been
http://www.world66.com/myworld66/visitedCountries/worldmap?visited=CAUSCZFRDEITLUNLESCHIQKWQA
Out of those places I've lived in Michigan, Germany, France and Colorado, in order of time lived there. I was in Iraq for a year, but I don't consider that having "lived" there.
I'd really like to visit Turkey someday. I've heard lots of good things. Beyond that I really want to go back to France, possibly permanently.

I'd happily go to all of them and some 150 other countries too. But on the top of my countries-i-want-to-visit list are Argentina and Japan.
I've been in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, UK (Wales, England, Scotland), Estonia, Lattvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republik, Germany, Netherlands, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Spain and Portugal. And Finland of course.

And that's one of the things I like about France. Not once did I feel unwelcome there, even after people learned of my history, such as being in Iraq.
Oh, and I'd really like to visit Japan and China at some point. I have several friends who live in Saitama, Japan and several who live in Shanghai whom I'm still in contact with (we went to school together in France) and I'd really like to get the sort of tours that locals could provide.

[QUOTE=Ariddia;13288248]Countries I've already been to: France (country of birth), England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Vatican, Sweden, China, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Cuba.
Humph...a bit of a cheat really. Counting England, Scotland and Wales as 3 separate countries as opposed to the 1 UK. And Italy AND the Vatican? Come on! That's 1 as well....
Are you very young or in need of impressing others equally young?

Oh darn, Ariddia has only visited 11 countries on four continents...that's still way more than the vast majority of people on NS, let alone the rest of the population.
