Terry Pratchett has announced that he is suffering from early onset Alzheimers. Very sad news for anyone who has read any of his books. Hopefully in someway this will lead to increased funding for research in the disease.

"I know it's a very human thing to say 'Is there anything I can do?' but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry."

Haha, this reminds me of being trapped under a sidecar motorbike and my friend hopping around frantically asking what he could do.

'You could get this thing off me' I replied.

Best wishes to him and glad to see he retains a sense of humour about it,

Good thing that he found it early.

... on a side note, I'm surprised he didn't say "I aten't dead".

He's the creator/writer of Discworld (among other less popular stuff). I'd probably say the Douglas Adams of fantasy (... or was Douglas Adams, The Terry Pratchett of sci-fi?)

Comedy fantasy stuff.

It is sad, but he does seem to be taking it well. The note to his fans was entitled "An Embuggerance" (a most excellent word) and he said he was even possibly optimistic about it all. Anyone who could think of Discworld couldn't help be so, I think.

Man...this is awful. Aside from losing a great author and one of the few people on this planet with a sense of humor, the UK is surely going to suffer badly from the loss of exports.

Maybe there will be something available for him before it turns in to anything more severe...one can only hope. I'd definitely pay more for his books in exchange for a donation to Alzheimer's research.

MILLENNIUM HAND AND SHRIMP!!

He's my favourite author - I hope he finishes 10 more books at least, and lives a long and clear life.

I've never said that I hate Bush. That's completely unfounded. I don't like what the guy's done, I wouldn't have voted for him were I living in the US and able to vote at that time, but I've never said that.

Figures of speech tend to be hard to work out across the internet. You could have been clearer.

Anyway, why are you trying to make a confrontation about the news that a popular and world-renowned author has a (likely) terminal disease?

Red wine and coffee might be a good idea; even if he slows down its progression, that's all the more time for potential treatments. I really hope there's something for him, because I wouldn't want to lose Terry to this.

Not to mention he's got an entire world in his mind, mental exercises slows the progress of the disease.

That is tough! :(

Probably the only thing worst than that was a coworker whose mom has it.

She would always hit on him. He said you don't know whats disturbing until your mother flirts with you.....

So far my families have not been hit with it. We get the fun stuff like CF, Hodgekins, and Huchinsons.......

Hold fast, Mr. Pratchett. Help is coming in the form of new medical research. Just try not to lose your memories before it's too late.

Yes, Terry's rich imagination will really help. If anything, he needs to keep writing and furiously to really put up a good fight; he's indicated that he's going to keep writing, so I think that will help slow the onset of the disease even further.

Wow. He manages to make light of his own disease, and WELL!

Someone should tell him that regardless of what happens, he will always be remembered as a genius.

A very sad day. On the other hand, I don't think Terry would want us to wallow in sorrow, as he himself jokes about it.

When he dies (due to Alzheimer's or not) I'd suggest his casket having several small legs and being shaped like an ark.

And before anyone criticizes me for bad taste, he seems like the kind of guy that would want just that.

I was kinda thinking it'd be a regular casket, because ... IT'S THE RULES.

Terry received a lot of fan letters from dying persons that said, when they meet Death, they sure hope that Death will be as pleasant as the one he wrote about. Those letters made him stare at his wall.
