No, dear, "Europe" is not a country...
I suppose it's better to laugh at these things (http://www.wat.tv/playlist/689334/video/740941/blonde-americaine-geographie.html) rather than find them depressing...
So as to give a little more substance to this thread, how many countries can you name from memory, without cheating? One simple rule: There are 192 countries which are members of the UN. (193 countries are recognised by the UN, but the Holy See is not a member.) How many of those can you list from memory?

I always find these clips funny. Shows there are dumb people everywhere. I bet though that that woman can do her hair and makeup much better then you or I.
As for your question I bet I can name 95%-100% on a good night sleep.

Don't mean to get all technical, but if you include England then you have to include Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland too. But like the countries I've just listed, England isn't a country recognised by the U.N, so you should say U.K
The U.S, Germany, France, England, Scotland, Ireland,( Is Wales still a country?), Norway, Japan, Eruguay, Finland, Russia, China, Bobland, Panama, Brazil, Venezuala, Canadia, Mexica, Veitnam, N and S Korea, Ethiopia, Singapore, Peru, Argentina and finally Phantasmagoria, to name a few.

Wales is classed as a country within the U.K (as are England, Scotland etc.) it has it's own language, anthem, flag etc. but all three make up the U.K (along with Northern Ireland) which is recognised by the U.N

Ahh ok thanks, I thought the english had conquered and incorperated them into england a thousand years back, but I was not sure. Thanks for the answer.
Edit: I skimmed the wiki link, nice country you have for yourself. I am speaking of the landscape of course, I couldnt say any thing else about it as I have not been there.

Bloody hell, I forgot Sri Lanka!
Glancing at other lists reminds me I also forgot Ethiopia, Eritrea, Benin, Guatemala, St Kitts & Nevis and Cameroon. I am deeply, deeply contrite. :(
<SNIP>
Well done! Just a few mistakes. Kosovo, Northern Cyprus and Western Sahara are not internationally recognised, and are not among the 192 UN members. Neither is the Republic of China.
Khadgar, French Guiana is an overseas department of France (and is considered to be part of France, rather than a French dependency). It's not a member of the UN.
I forgot Costa Rica, Ghana, Burundi and Liberia, but everyone seems to have forgotten them. :p
And there are still 6 that are completely unaccounted for.
*get pointer*
You so know whats coming (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IDtdQ8bTvRc) :D
He mentions England and Scotland, but not Wales!
Polynesia
Is Polynesia a country?
Still, you beat me at my known weakness (Africa and island nations). Can't believe I missed San Marino.
ugh...too tedious. I got 118.
117. ;) Aruba isn't independent.
I just noticed Taiwan in someone's list. Is it represented at the U.N as Taiwan, Rep. of China, or even at all?
Not at all. The UN recognises only one China, and considers Taiwan to be a province of the PRC.

Nope. Polynesia is a region which includes Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, French Polynesia, New Zealand, Tuvalu, Hawaii, the Cook Islands and several other countries and territories.
117. ;) Aruba isn't independent.
Not at all. The UN recognises only one China, and considers Taiwan to be a province of the PRC.
Only because the People's Republic has a veto. There's no credible reason not to count the Republic of China as a country (though it naturally isn't among the 193).

You must have a weak accent to get mistaken for English. My family's from Llandudno - there's no way anyone would take them for English (twp, maybe, but not English).

Did anyone remember Luxembourg or Monaco?
<SNIP>
Not bad. ;) Serbia and Montenegro are now two seperate countries, though. Malta is indeed an independent country, and a member of the EU as well as the UN.
Those that shouldn't be in your list: Chechnya (considered by the UN to be part of Russia), Tibet (considered to be part of China), Cook Islands (self-governing territory under New Zealand sovereignty), Tokelau (colony of New Zealand), Aruba (territory of... uhm, the Netherlands, I think), French Guyana (part of France), West Sahara (considered by the UN to be part of Morocco, although recognised by the African Union), "The other Yemen" (there is only one Yemen now), Dubai (part of the UAE, indeed).
On the other hand, you thought of a few that I forgot, including Trinidad & Tobago and the Seychelles. ;) (Which, if I've counted correctly, still leaves four that nobody has thought of and that I can't remember.)

Not entirely accurate (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IDtdQ8bTvRc), but a friend of mine is trying to memorise the list.
Also, it's not the UK but its parts? Because I totally had those and then thought "Nah..." and changed it. *mopes*
No, it's the UK. The UK is composed of four constituent countries, three of which have devolved governments, but only the UK as a whole has sovereignty and is a member of the UN.
Did anyone remember Luxembourg or Monaco?
Yes, me. :p The country I live in borders both of them.
Imagine how annoying it is for me when abroad!
Them: "Oh, you're English?"
Me: "No, actually, I'm Welsh"

I sympathise.
Here in France most people say "England" when they mean "the UK". Consequently, they think Scotland and Wales are part of England.
You're penitent before God? I suspect you are merely attrite.
Hmmm. At least one source (http://www.google.fr/search?hl=fr&q=define%3A+contrite&meta=) appears to suggest that the word is sometimes used in a non-religious sense. I'll check in a paper dictionary tomorrow.
Only because the People's Republic has a veto. There's no credible reason not to count the Republic of China as a country (though it naturally isn't among the 193).

Incidentally, the island of New Guinea was so called because when the Spanish found it, they thought the inhabitants looked "African". Which explains why you have a country with "Guinea" in its name all the way over in the Pacific.
To confuse people even more, Papua New Guinea has islands called New Britain and New Ireland.

And stupid French Guiana, non-colony or not, don't forget them. With their stupid "look at us, we're different" spelling. :p Which, to make matters even worse, is not spelled "Guiana" in German but "Guayana". Which explains why I spelled it that way. *boggles*
Also, while you're here and answering questions and I'm too lazy to ask the internet at my finger tips: what does Guinea (and all its versions) actually mean?

I could name more, dozens more, but about to head home from work. That's just the western hemisphere.
At the risk of sounding obvious (and I'm probably way too late in pointing this out), but the Western Hemisphere does consist of a lot more than just the Americas you know... like, say, half the UK, a bit of France, Spain, Portugal and several west African countries.
It's not as if the Greenwich Meridian passes through south London after all.

guin·ea (gĭn'ē)
n.
(Abbr. g.)
A gold coin issued in England from 1663 to 1813 and worth one pound and one shilling.
The sum of one pound and one shilling.
Offensive Slang. Used as a disparaging term for a person of Italian birth or descent.
[After the GUINEA coast of Africa, the source of the gold from which it was first made.]

Well, I knew about the coin (though not that it was named for its place of origin). But of course that begs the question even more why all these countried were named Guinea, even before the coin.

That said, I always forget all the "nations" in the Greater/Lesser Antilles. Too many of them and too damned small. But how seriously should people take a grouping whose "central government" (i.e. the European Commission) has now had its annual accounts rejected as inadequate by the official auditors for thirteen consecutive years? :(

Yes, Taiwan government does not dispute it. But on the bottom of each Taiwanese is written "Made in Taiwan" and on the bottom of each Chinese is written "Made in China."
And I can prove this fact!
If it is required, I can make all citizens of Taiwan and citizens of China lower their trousers and show you their bottoms.

Despite people writing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the only two recognised nations in the British Isles are the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (Eire).
I could only remember 122. The easiest way to do it, I think, it to mentally picture each continent and kind of skip around from region to region. I did terrible with Africa and Oceania. Edit: Damn it I forgot Ireland! Apologies to the Irish.

(* Either together, as -- theoretically -- the last remnants of the Duchy of Normandy, or as two separate 'Balliwicks' which is how they're now administered...)
(** Still recognised by the Pope, by Italy, and perhaps by a few other Roman Catholic governments too, although landless since about 1801: Their HQ in [the Italy-controlled side of] Rome possesses extraterritorial status, like an embassy...)
(*** Effectively two separate territories, one Serb and the other Muslim & Croatian, for most purposes.)
(**** Annexed by India, not that long ago...)

Sweety, I've never heard "Yakko" before having seen that film, and "Animaniac" I still don't know, so... I never said he/it wasn't, I just knew it only under that one name. Chill out, folks, I never said Junii was wrong or anything...

If you think just that particular segment was bad, try watching the entire episode. I think my IQ dropped about 70 points just by seeing it.
-snip-
Why did you have to do that and get that song stuck in my head? I must have vengeance...but I can only think of one thing to do...
Congratulations, you just lost The Game
Should express my displeasure well enough.

Czechy, Slovakia
I think it's fairly safe to point out that the song would have probably most likely stated "Czechoslovakia".

I remember the Nation song and that it was on Animaniacs, so...

If I've counted right, you've got 189, excluding Taiwan and including the Vatican. That's better than my 176 (well done!), but unless I miscounted you missed four. ;)
I found three that I missed: Hungary (a really obvious one! :headbang:), Albania (again, obvious), and Brunei (a little more obscure, but I know where it is, it shares the island of Borneo with Indonesia and Malaysia).

As geographically touching as that may be, the British Isles include Eire and isn't recognised as a separate country anyway. It's the United Kingdom (including the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands) and the Republic of Ireland, nothing else.

Oh, I give up. Not going to bother with all the little island countries. Damn them, damn them all.
Okay, so I got about 110 and forgot Bangladesh, Peru, Syria and Sri Lanka amongst others. Oops.
I can name roughly 180 countries from memory and place them correctly on a map...to the amazement of everybody in my geography class. I'd name them here, but that really doesn't prove anything.
