Well there's one good thing about that video. As an Englishman, I was immensely gratified to see Tony Blair emphasising his Scottish heritage for once. Makes it easier to see which side of the border any blame lies. :)

They could have immensely improved that if all they did was remove absolutely every reference to "junior national park rangers". I mean WTF? That just came out of nowhere.

Just show clips of the dogs and kitty running around the White House, and have shots of all the staff and Blair giving them cuddles and it'd be the best presidential christmas address ever.

A few thoughts:

1 - Bush likes National Parks a lot better than National Forests.

2 - Bush is better at acting than being a president. But I think the world would have been a better place if he had just grown up to be a factory manager. I blame his dad.

3 - God I want to fuck Jenna and Barbara so bad. Laura's looking all right, too.

4 - Tony Blair is bald and crazy. I guess what letting a "special relationship" take over your life will do to you. You bend over and over again and all you get is a few seconds in a Christmas video.

Okay, I'm usually in amongst those who pile upon the President when he's done something ridiculous, but what's with all the uncalled-for harshness? This video probably was an educational holiday message promoting the National Parks to kids. I don't think you have a grasp on just how much of this kind of thing a President has to do as part of his job. I'd wager there are tons of recordings and addresses the President makes in the course of the average week that we'll never see because they're not intended for general release. This one had the tenor of a kids' infotainment video.

So no, none of the Bushes can act, they're not trained for it. I'll give the Bush daughters points for looking good and excellent diction, and Laura even got an indirect promo for literacy and reading to your family in there.

All in all, as promotional videos from the White House go, and I haven't seen them all, but I've seen a few, this is standard fare.

I'm not asking you all to lay off, you're free to go to town on whoever you want at your leisure. But I just have to remind you that disproportionate vitriol like I've read so far is one of the things Bush critics do that does more harm to the critic than to the subject of criticism. Remember all the right-wing talk show/radio show hosts in the 90s who suggested things like Chelsea Clinton was the White House dog? The girl was 13, for cryin' out loud.

So why pile on the guy for doing something he probably had to do and had little or no hand in scripting? Take the man to task for the things he does that actually mean something.

Oh, you were plenty clever. I'm kinda like the Japanese automaker of cleverness. I can't create clever from scratch, but I can see others' clever and perhaps improve on it by making it for less money or improving it's gas mileage. But then someone comes along and sticks a ridiculous wing and a cannon-sized muffler on my clever improvement, and life begins to suck.

It certainly wasn't a groundbreaking example of film (I think the several short films I made on my own back in high school would have easily surpassed it), but it was cute. At least it's benign and deliberately silly rather than obtusely belligerent and feinting seriousness, which many have long come to expect from Bush & co. when they're in the spotlight; in this sense it's something of an antidote.

edit: although I think the bit about the national parks was bullshit anyway. I see Bush as being overtly anti-environment, so it's mystifying why they even bothered. If there was a decent amount of oil under a national park I'm almost certain they'd go for the oil. nothing like sucking your own dick...
