Braveheart IS awesome.

the acting is terrible, as is the "characters" and the plot is fairly terrible too (though you can't really pin this on living people)

And what's the difference between a movie and a film? They are the same thing.

Movie = little plot made up for with either high budget explosions or gore e.g. the Saw movies

Film = Art form e.g. Devils backbone

Lilja 4-ever. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300140/)

It is very emotionally draining, though, so if you're used to vapid, Hollywood fluff, you may be in for a very rough ride watching it.

Tillsammans (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203166/), by the same director is also very good and much more forgiving.

The Princess Bride
Labyrinth

The first two of these are definitely two of the greatest movies ever made. Especially Labyrinth. Sooo many levels... sooo much to think about. I'm still finding new depths in that movie and I've been watching it for two decades.

Maybe "The Last Unicorn" also, since it has so much in common with those two. :)

Princess Bride and Dark City, both awesome. Not seen Departed, but isn't it a remake of a Japanese, (or Korean...? not seen the original) movie anyway?

"Hero" is truly lovely. Others that have been listed already... The Prestige, Equilibrium, Dark City, The Princess Bride, Labyrinth. The Last Unicorn is very good, too.

I also like The Fountain. The Usual Suspects. Mulholland Drive. Seven. Twelve Monkeys. Sixth Sense, etc
