Anatomy Thread!

So, I just got done with my first semester as a Med Student, and I got to say, I had a wonderful time studying the human body. It is just so amazing and wonderful, and it's awesome how all parts of our body works together to form a functioning human body. So, who else has taken Anatomy? What is your favorite system, favorite organ, cells, etc?

For me, it would have to be the Cardiovascular system, the heart, blood cells, White Blood Cells, the Arteries and the Veins, not to mention the capillaries bed throughout the body. I just found it really amazing! :) I also enjoyed the muscle and the bones.

Genitourinary System, even though I hate nephrology. :p Finding the internal pudendal nerve is fun... and oh yeah, also splitting a cadaver's penis and pubic symphysis in half. :D

The skull and brain. Mainly because lab exercises involve the use of quality power tools (http://www.stryker.com/myhsp/exercise/Instruments/GeneralMultiSpecialtyInstruments/PowerTools/HeavyDuty/PrecisionSaw/index.htm). Hey Bob (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Vila), lets see Sears (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craftsman_%28tools%29) do that.

Especially when one accidentally nicks that one artery that didn't quite get completely drained. Oh dear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Face_shield).

Ha. Ours was much fun. We used hammers, chisels, and hacksaws. Definitely good for developing murderous tendencies.

meh, I don't really like anatomy, but it's ok. I prefer physiology (especially of the nerve-system) because it answers "how" and not "what". But to answer your question, I prefer anatomy of the brain.

Hey, when you're in this thread, you'll refer to them as mammaries!

Or you could try using proper Latin and not the abomination used in the Anglo countries and refer to them as "glandula mammaria" or simply "mamma".

Anyhew, I pick the twelve cranial nerves: N. olfactorius, opticus, oculomotorius, trochlearis, trigeminus, abducens, facialis, vestibulocochlearis, glossopharyngeus, vagus, accessorius, hypoglossus. They're of course part of any routine neurological examination and I like them because they can be so methodically and easily tested and the findings can tell you so much.

Also, I have to pick circulus arteriosus cerebri (Willisi), simply for being a bitch to remember all its branches.

I still do :p

As for Anatomy: looking at it and learning bits and pieces was fun. Trying to remember all the stupid names for everything was less so.

I used to know a very dirty mnemonic device to remember those.

I used to, too, something like "Oh, Oh, Oh To Touch And Feel Various Girls' Vaginas And Hymen."

But the thing was that mnemonic devices never worked that well with me. I'd remember the device, but still forget what it stood for, so I just learnt stuff by name, and the mnemonic didn't help a bit with remembering their function.

I knew a different one used to remember their function......to tell the truth they are clutter in my brain now.

for a while when I was younger I wanted to be a pathologist, so I learned a lot of anatomy and medical stuff.....right now the only good it does me is teaching anatomy stuff to my kid who wants to be a doctor and freaking myself out over medical issues......

CT? Pfft. Splurge on an MRI and a positron emission tomography while you're at it. And lots and lots of blood work - it could be giant cell arteritis, and then we'd need to biopsy. :)

I always have enjoyed the brain. In my junior year of HS,I was in a dual credit college anatomy class, and one of our things was to successfully remove the brain and spine of a pig. I was the only one in class to do it with out tearing. I still have the thing at home in a jar. Kinda creepy really. That was also the class that helped me decide not to go into health care. We were examining a cadaver and i was leaning on the box that it was in, and my hand slipped and fell into the juices....and that made me sick...and I spewed. :(

This of course merits nothing less but deploying the de-lochinator. *excellent*

It wasn't that the instrument was junk, things break after all. It was trying to get an already cash strapped community college to spend more money on its inaugural human prosection class to get the stupid thing fixed. All the other lab equipment (especially microscopes) were guarded with an almost insane fury for precisely the same reason.

The sudden event isn't so bad. What's bad is when, in order to reach a tricky spot, you've been leaning against the subject for approximately ten minutes before you realize that the protective gown you've been wearing only protects for approximately 5 minutes.

Ask your instructor if the class can finish with the construction of a nifty trophy (http://www.clinicalcharts.com/shop/images/1745.jpeg). Why buy one when you can make your own?

Ahh, good times.
The fetal pig I had to dissect must have been aborted(or however they acquire those things) especially early because it was ridiculously small compared to the other ones. I couldn't even find some of the organs and everything looked different. This may have been partially due to my hackjob of a dissection.
