Okay, time for something lighter.

The last few summers, I've been driving a tour bus (tourism is seasonal here, big shock). Anybody else work in the tourism industry? Got any good stories? Any kind of tourists that you love or hate?

No, but I'd love to hear stories. So, which are the worst tourists?

The ones that don't tip.

Honestly, I really only have one stupid tourist story. A couple of years ago, we had a bunch of construction on one of our regular runs. I got in the habit of showing a video about town while we were stuck in it. Part of it covers North Pole, a little town a few miles south of here that is big into the Christmas theme. A lady asked me if they were open year-round.

My personal favorites are people from the South (USA). They're laid back, easy to talk to, and I get to mess with their heads when I talk about winter.

...

a LOOONG time ago, I was walking home from school (Elementary) and I saw a couple of my friends talking to a couple in a car, they were pointing and giving directions. By the time I caught up with them, the car pulled away and drove down the road in the direction they indicated.

I asked them what they wanted.

Them: "they wanted directions to Iao Needle (http://www.hawaiiweb.com/maui/html/sites/iao_valley_state_park.html). "

I stopped and thought about the directions I over heard them giving...

"you just sent them to Kihei." (a beach town that is in the OPPOSITE Direction... great beaches and tourist shops, but not where they wanted to go.)

they stopped and thought about it..

both of them: "oops."

as for tourists I hate? those that don't come to Hawaii. :p

oddly we don't get many tourists in the midlands

I have however meet a woman who didn't know they had different plugs around the world (this was on holiday and so is relevant)

Hehehe. So, no nationality that's the worst? What kinds of nationalities do you get most in Alaska anyway?

What sort of plugs are we talking about here?

Tourism Poconoes is a great place. . . . Probably none of you even now where that is.

I work in the hospitality industry. Crazy tourists come to my hotel all the time.

In Alaska, we get just about everything. But I work for a tour company, and most non-Americans don't seem to like to come with a tour company. I guess they like to plan their own tours instead of having someone do it for them (which there is something to be said for).

Also, we don't get many West Coast folk. I guess that's just because, being closer, Alaska doesn't seem as interesting.

Ah, 220 V vs. 110 V.

Ah, 220 V vs. 110 V.

The actual shape of the plug is at least as important. Most of my electronics are dual voltage, but that doesn't help if it doesn't fit into the damned outlet.

Yep.

Lucky for me I have sufficient adapters so I can plug all of my European electronics into American outlets and vice verse.

Overheard by an OTC friend working at the castle.

"Aw, we missed the one o'clock gun. What time do they fire it next?"

A) not everyone holds the same ideals as the Trask Sisters...

and

B) If they are living in Hawaii... then they are not tourists... :p

I just recently bought one thingy that can do all the combinations. Now I only have to take a vacation to somewhere to use it...

Oh. D'oh. I was thinking they just fired a gun several times a day, meaning it would totally have made sense to ask when it's fired next.

*doesn't get it* the Trask sisters are HIGHLY vocal about their displeasure of the Tourist industry... to the point of rallying people to get rid of the tourists... not realizing that the Government of Hawaii squandered the agriculture to the point where it's a joke and thus Hawaii's economy is heavily relying on tourism.

See that comma between "tourists" and "living"? It's there for a reason. :p
*cleans glasses* oh, so I see, yes, there is a little comma there... :p

well, the locals know where all the tourists areas are, so we can avoid them when possible. :p
