Who/what do you turn to?

We all have hards times, and bad days. So who or what do you turn to in those times, to give you comfort and peace of mind? For me, its my faith, like many others. I really can't turn to my family nor friends, since they are the cause of a lot of my troubles :p

I typically go to my bookshelf, pick out a book I love, curl up in bed and re-read it. That or escape to the pottery studio for a day. Not much for pouring my heart out to innocent friends and family. My bad days are more my fault that actual issues that must be debated or resolved.

This poll should be the kind that you can choose multiple answers in. Because I turn to more than one of those options.

If I'm having a bad day, "peace of mind" is probably a luxury I can't afford. I get angry and defiant instead, and that generally helps me push through anything.

I don't really "turn to" anything. If I'm having a shitty day or time, I just go as best I can. While I was in the Army (especially when I was in Iraq) I learned to not sweat the things I have no control over.

I turn to thinking. I think about my problems. I think about them from new angles and perspectives. I think outside the box, inside the box, and down the road from the box. I think about them with a goat, I think about them in a boat. Then I think about them in all those ways at once. Generally, my head asplouds at this point in time, and all is well.

All of the above. The way I deal with a problem depends a lot on the nature of the problem.

If I have some deep emotion that's troubling me, I'll get it out by writing poetry or song.

If I have a cluttered mind and need focus, I'll meditate and/or pray.

If I need something to enjoy and distract, I'll put on some music, or practice making my own music.

If I need guidance, I'll go to my friends, family, or a book that speaks to my problem. That book may be religious or not religious.

If I just need to talk to someone, I may go my significant other.

Your friends should not be the source of trouble for you. At least not on a regular basis. Family you are born into and friends are the family you would choose if you could. I say use your faith and your friends. If your friends are the source of the problem think about getting some new or more friends to rely on for sound advice and emotional support in hard times.

There are very few things that I've come across that I can't deal with on my own, but they do crop up from time to time.

I usually turn to my friends. I don't have a huge number of people I would call friends, but the ones that I have I am very close to, can discuss anything with, and have never let me down. My wife falls into this category, too, which seems natural to me but seems not to be the case for some couples that I know.

Oh, that depends very much on the nature and the source of my troubles, just as HotRod said.

If I'm just having a moody day, I usually let music and/or physical exercise take care of that.

If it's someone I'm not close to (or some inanimate circumstance), I usually vent to someone I am close to (NB when I'm angry, all I usually need is to relate that to someone else once, and the anger disappears).

When I'm sad, it's usually one of the three people closest to me who will get the job of drying my tears and telling me it'll be all right again. Strangely enough, I usually turn to the very person who (inadvertently) hurt me to console me IFF I feel the pain isn't, you know, 'rational', but just me overreacting emotionally to the tiniest thing as I'm prone to do, and then I'll usually tell them that I'm "just having a bad moment" and not let them know tehy had a hand in it. I don't know why I do that, but I do.

With most serious things that aren't just the occasional mood swings, however, I tend to pull the lone player part and just work it out myself. I've very successfully learned to be my own best friend, and best support person, and after a short emotional despair I can usually give myself the strength to do whatever needs doing that moment. Things like writing, singing, taking a walk or some quiet time may help, then.

Music.

Though when my problem is intellectual--when I am troubled by a challenging argument whose implications are in some way upsetting--that doesn't help. I have to actually resolve the issue or I go crazy.

Ah, well. At least it cures boredom.

My family. What's the point of having a collection of people you're very close to if you don't use them?

a) You might want to not presuppose that everyone counts their family as "people one is very close with".

b) I like to "use" my "collection" of people I'm close with more for sharing and multiplying the good, rather than making them feel my bad. I know they'd not object to it, and that they'd love to be there for me, but more often than not I choose not to do that.

Three main areas that stress can effect;
1) personal/home life.
2) school/work/care.
3) financial.
Not everyone reacts to stress in the same way, something may cause alot of stress to one person and have no effect on another.
It is not so much the situation itself, or the individual, but the interaction between the two that triggers the stress response.
So different personality types will cope better with different situations, talking to other friends or family can help.
Prescribed drugs can relieve symptoms of stress, however they don't stop the cause of stress.
Physical exercise, relaxation, meditation, and assertiveness are different methods to help reduce stress.
Different types of stress affect different parts of society, often "lower classes" typical example is depression, however "upper classes" is neuroticism. But don't take my word for it look it up,

Ok, my good ways of dealing with stress?

Music, going out with friends, dancing, getting more organised and breaking things up into manageable bits, sex, doing something just for me.

Bad ways?

Drinking, isolating myself, shutting down and getting nothing done, sex.

I can be alternately really fantastic at dealing with stress, or abysmal at it.

So who or what do you turn to in those times, to give you comfort and peace of mind?

Wikipedia articles on the age, evolution, and eventual demise of the universe, Earth, and homo sapiens sapiens. For example, did you know that the entirety of human history, from the first bipedal ape-like thing to today's person, constitutes only 0.0004% of the entire history of the planet Earth? Only about 0.00014% of the history of the universe? How about the fact that the last time the Sun completed an orbit around the galactic center, only the earliest of the mammal-like creatures were beginning to diverge from the reptiles?

Kinda puts things into perspective.

I have no practical reason to care, but there is still something strange and disturbing about the fact that life as we know it on Earth is going to be extinguished in about 600 million years. Still, in the same amount of time, that same life advanced from primitive sponges to everything we see today, including humans. Imagine what another 600 million years will bring.

And if it all has to end some day, hopefully we'll all go out with style (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Rip). T-minus 50 billion years and counting...

I'd actually really like to see the 50,000,020th Century.

Several ways, depending on the level of upset/ stress.

Music for something minor.
Poetry for something depressing.
Art for something emotional.
Writing for something uncontrollable.
Kendo for my utter lack of faith in humanity.
Kyudo for something that needs calming.

Mostly though, when I'm upset, I need to create something.
