A judge in India has summoned two Hindu gods, Ram and Hanuman, to help resolve a property dispute.
Judge Sunil Kumar Singh in the eastern state of Jharkhand has issued adverts in newspapers asking the gods to "appear before the court personally".

The gods have been asked to appear before the court on Tuesday, after the judge said that letters addressed to them had gone unanswered.

Ram and Hanuman are among the most popular Indian Hindu gods.

Judge Singh presides in a "fast track" court - designed to resolve disputes quickly - in the city of Dhanbad.

The dispute is now 20 years old and revolves around the ownership of a 1.4 acre plot of land housing two temples.

The deities of Ram and Hanuman, the monkey god, are worshipped at the two temples on the land.

Temple priest Manmohan Pathak claims the land belongs to him. Locals say it belongs to the two deities.

The two sides first went to court in 1987.

A few years ago, the dispute was settled in favour of the locals. Then Mr Pathak challenged the verdict in a fast track court.

Judge Singh sent out two notices to the deities, but they were returned as the addresses were found to be "incomplete".

This prompted him to put out adverts in local newspapers summoning the gods.

"You failed to appear in court despite notices sent by a peon and later through registered post. You are herby directed to appear before the court personally", Judge Singh's notice said.

The two Hindu gods have been summoned as the defence claimed that they were owners of the disputed land.

"Since the land has been donated to the gods, it is necessary to make them a party to the case," local lawyer Bijan Rawani said.

Mr Pathak said the land was given to his grandfather by a former local king.

My proposal: LG dresses up as one of them and makes an appearance.

My suspicion is that Hindu gods don't appreciate court summonses any more than the rest of us. Surely, they have much better things to do.

Indian bureaucracy (including judiciary clerks etc) are notorious for blindly following the written rules (a legacy of having one colonial officer at top having to control the dozens of clerks below him).

Instead of taking on the hundreds of thousands of backlogged cases (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Judiciary_equally_to_blame_for_backlog/articleshow/2583272.cms), the courts have time to indulge in such comedy.:headbang:

I like this judge's sense of humor.
Or, at least, I'm assuming he's only doing this to make a joke of the priest's claims.

oh sure its all well and good if you assume that these gods dont really exist and that he'll just have to toss the claim out.

but WHAT IF THEY SHOW UP? is he really prepared to host god's in his little district courtroom? i think not.

I endorse this idea.

If they doubt I am Hanuman in mortal form, I shall fling poo at them!

Now I wish I could draw comics. I would draw something based on this that would be highly amusing.

What a joke. No wonder people make fun of India. You can't claim that land belongs to God since God owns everything. In this case, it'd be open land since God isn't here in person to actually rule it.

Dear Judge Singh,

It has been drawn to the attention of my employer that you wish Him to appear before your court next Tuesday, to speak in His defence regarding a property dispute relating to His temple in the Djarkhand region.

I regret to inform you that due to prior engagements Hanuman shall not be able to attend your court, and recommends that you proceed without His most gracious presence. He also wishes to take this opportunity to demand that all mortals to stop being so fucking petty and fighting over trivialities, and to leave His temples alone.

Yours sincerely

I'm assuming the Judge is doing this to make a point about the claim the land is owned by the Gods. If/when they don't appear in court it will be shown that they can't exist as legal entities.

Probably.
