Undoubtedly, most of you have received at least one of these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_fee_fraud). Interestingly, I didn't get my first one until a few months ago, but I've getting them like crazy lately, receiving more than one a day.

How often do you receive them?

Funnily enough it looks like the Nigerians are kicking of again...and this time are much more sophisticated...ok...ok...they actually bought a spell checker...albeit a second hand one...

****CONTACT MRS BRIGGS****
Dear Friend,
I'm happy to inform you about my success in getting the fund transferred to a Swiss Account with the cooperation of a new partner from Paraguay who is an international business man.
Presently I'm in Paraguay for investment projects with my own share of the total sum. Meanwhile, I did not forget your past efforts and attempts to assist me in transferring those funds despite that it failed us some how.

Now contact my secretary, her contact is:
Name: Miss. Briggs Reginna
Email: regina4ng@yahoo.com
Ask her to send you the total of $1,500.000.00 (One Million Five Hundred Thousand US Dollars) that I kept for your compensation for all the past efforts and attempt to assist me in this matter. I appreciated your efforts at that time very much. So feel free and get in touched with my secretary Miss. Briggs Reginna and instruct her where to send the amount to you.

Please do let me know immediately you receive it so that we can share the joy after all the sufferness at that time.
In the moment, I am very busy here because of the investment projects, which the new partner and I are having at hand.
Finally, remember that I had forwarded instruction to my secretary on your behalf to receive that money, so feel free to get in touch with Miss. Briggs Reginna and she will send the amount to you without any delay.

With best regards
Please do not reply me on the email box below,is my private email address:
francis_891@yahoo.com
Thanks for you urderstanding

Dr.Mr Francis Duk

I do admit though that I am not quite sure about this one...there are a few references that are....unusual.

I wouldn't know, I mainly sign up to things with my tertiary email address, and since it's a Gmail account all the spam gets filtered out. Probably a few of the ten or so spam letters I get a day are like that.

My junk mail folder(fromwhich email are deated 10 days after their arrival) seems to perpetually have 60-110 emails in it. The majority of these appear to be phising scams. The first page currently looks like:

Yep...I use a throwaway addy if I need to give an email out when on a message board...my work and private ones are much better protected.

Yeah...it can get mad though...at the height of the scamming our exchange servers were getting well and truely hammered...until we started managing our own POP and SMTP servers....sorted out block lists and allsorts of neat stuff....then corporate moved us to Message Labs (and I had no issue with that at all....ML are the r0x0r)...

Yours is probably more throwaway than mine, I use mine for IMing people I meet on message boards too, and for receiving email from such people. Although I don't think that the latter happens very often.

The point is having a throwaway spam magnet is good :)

Well, they claim to be from either of those two countries.

Heh I just delete and block any like this I get. Not that I get that many, using my crap account for most things on the net.

It does though make me laff that these people try to sound so professional yet have free web based email. A certain pointer to fraud in my book.

Ok...you mean in the content of the email or the origin of the system that sent you the email? I was thinking the latter...content is just fluff to me...I am more interested in the delivery mechanisms.

Oh I think the 419'ers invented an entire language around english... LOL

You'd be surprised actually at how many people use webmail accounts for biz...I've seen snr execs in large multinationals using Hotmail to conduct biz because 'our exchange server is slow'...and that is a drop in the ocean...

yeah spam magnet...I admit I do sometimes read them just for the hell of it...I esp love the 'Microsoft Lottery' and the 'BMW Lottery' phishing attacks...like either company would run a Lottery! LOL

You are probably right, but you know what, I personally then would not deal with these people.

Within the professional world, to act in a manner that is not professional is sorta detrimental to your business.

i have numerous accounts. one old/thowaway hotmail one i use mostly for signing up to things; one gmail one for personal communications and buying stuff online; and then a number of work accounts which (surprise surprise) i only use for work and get very little spam on.

it works quite well... lots of spam > a bit of spam > very little spam :)
