Irrational hatred?

I would like some advice on something here, and to hear your opinions. My girlfriend has what I would consider to be an irrational hatred. She hates, with a flaming passion... gum. Yes, that's right, plain and simple chewing gum. She will not chew gum. She will not look at someone who is chewing gum. If she is in the car, then noone can chew gum. Also, she hates anything minty, because it reminds her of gum. That is foods, candies, toothpaste, anything. Even just something minty on my breath, be it from brushing my teeth or eating a tic tac, reminds her of gum and disturbs her. Oh, and let's not forget the color pink. Bubble gum is pink, so she hates the color pink. She actually dislikes another friend of mine, simply because they called her pinkish-purple backpack... pinkish purple.
I don't know, maybe it is silly, but it kind of bothers me. I mean, this morning I woke up late for class, after I should have gotten on the bus, so I didn't have time to brush my teeth (nasty, I know). Well, after my class was over I went to convocation, where I got a piece of gum from a friend because the taste in my mouth was awful. My girlfriend wouldn't look in my direction for the rest of the hour.
Am I wrong for thinking that that is exceedingly silly, and strikes me as the sort of thing she should just try to get over? And does this mean that I should never chew gum or eat minty things again, or should she just learn to cope? Let's hear it.
Thanks and God Bless,
Sven
It is exceedingly silly. I have an irrational hatred of cheese, and I don't act like that, I just don't eat it.

gun is the embodiment of evil
by chewing gum you are releasing malicious spirits into your body
your girlfriend is right to be weary of gum!

irrational dislikes are irrational. you wont be able to talk her out of it.
she is what she is, accept it or move on.

Maybe she's extremely sensitive. To some people, chewing can look pretty gross, this coupled with the popping and slurping sounds some people make while chewing gum can be off-putting. And if someone is chewing with his/her mouth open, it can be downright nauseating.
Although the whole pink/mint thing is wierd.
Maybe she should be checked for ADD.

I have 4 words for you:
Get yourself another Girlfriend.
See, I love this one, and I'm pretty sure I want to marry her. Besides, it isn't like girl are lining up around the block to date me. If I was that cool, I probably wouldn't be asking for advice from a bunch of people who I don't know...

Aren't all hatreds irrational? I don't see anything rational about plunging your own psyche into a simmering cauldron of negative emotions.I hate being cold. That's not irrational at all.

then stop chewing gum around her.
if she is great otherwise, dont let a small mental glitch ruin your relationship. if she were claustrophobic you wouldnt want to force her into an elevator would you?
accept it, keep an eye out for other irrational dislikes and if it gets too bad tell her to seek help or youll have to move on.

I hate being cold. That's not irrational at all.
Everyone prefers a certain level of temperature to remain in their comfort zone. That doesn't mean it's a "hatred." You're using the word "hate" here to mean "dislike," which isn't the same thing at all.

For the record, I want to make it clear to everyone that I am not stupid enough to break up with the girl over this. I love her, and I want to spend forever with her. I'm hardly going to throw that away over gum...

You should consider it though. If she's irrational about one thing, she will be irrational about others. Like you for example. First gum, then your heart strings! I tell you, she's a ticking time bomb.
I've yet to meet someone who isn't irrational about some things. I sure as heck am...

maybe she uses unflavored toothpaste?
also, your GF sounds like a whackjob and you probably won't be able to change her, so love it or leave it.

I side with this post. She could be sweetest thing in the world and you'd still get hurt. Crazy girls are just crazy to the core, and my crystal ball says that your future with her will be tumultuous and unsufficiently rewarding. If she IS a great girl though you could give her the benefit of the doubt and dump her only if she really does start doing retarted shit. But don't be too "understanding", "understanding" is just a word made up by women to emasculate men and make them feel guilty all the time.
(this was only a halfserious post btw)

Maybe she associates gum or the smell of gum with some bad memory and everytime she see's it or smells it, it reminds her of it. I dont think that it is irrational at all because every hatred has a reason for being a hatred.

Nope... Not this one. She chewed gum once as a small child, decided she didn't like, and the hatred began.

Or this is her petty way of being the center of attention -- because the princess DEMANDS no one near her do this minor thing, and people go along to avoid the snit.

Well, that makes sense to me. Small child means easily formed views, habits, and what have you, and unless they are countered they can continue for a huge amount of time. I'd offer up an example for myself but I'd rather not do so.
Or this is her petty way of being the center of attention -- because the princess DEMANDS no one near her do this minor thing, and people go along to avoid the snit.
Oh, yes, she must be petty. It's not possible that it's just an idiosyncrasy of hers. Oh no.
Come on, Kat...you've got to have some sort of idiosyncrasy, right? I mean, you're a mod here, aren't you?

That may be all well and good for Sven, but if I were in Sven's position, as much trouble finding a girlfriend as I've had in my life, I'd consider giving up gum to keep her.
And refraining from referring to her pinkish-purple backpack as "pinkish purple".

It's one thing to hate something, it's completely another thing to despise anything that might have 6 degrees of seperation to the object of your hatred.
For instance, say that someone hates, umm, cotton socks. Does that make it even slightly reasonable for them to hate Eli Whitney, or thermal underware(bit of a stretch there)? Nope.
The only way I could be with someone like that would be if she recognized that the problem was hers, and if she was willing to compromise.
it's not irrational when your entire family died in a horrible chewing gum catastrophe
Well, it's still irrational, but an irrationality for which most people would forgive.
