Why I love my home, America!

Some reasons why I like America:

Everything is big! bathrooms, trucks, hallways, camping sites. We have plenty of elbow room here.
Diversity! No really, If you think that Americans are some kind of hegemonic xenophobic isolationists, I invite you to drive from one side of Atlanta Georgia to the other and count how many different languages you see on building facades
Food is cheap! Between the great plains and the fruit orchards of California, food is plentiful! I bought a fabulous flank steak last week for $8 and it was so big I made three dinners out of it. A steak that big in Paris or London would cost twice as much and be half the size. And people in Japan pay out of their noses for fresh fruit from California. I love America because I love good cheap food!
Guns! and the right to use them. I own multiple guns, I am very proud of them, and by golly if you break into my apartment I will shoot you and then call the police.
Beautiful Landscape! I know there are many beautiful places all around the world, but there are a fare amount of natural wonders in America! I've been to Alaska, Yellowstone and I've hiked the Appalachian trail. I love nature and America has plenty of it.

Country music! I like American Country Music!

I agree with your sentiments (except perhaps big vehicles...that's one thing I'd be glad to see go away)...the only difference is that I like classical music and a good play rather than country music. But then again, that's another part of the US that's great; we can have totally different interests and still be able to find someone or somewhere that caters to them.

I hate the big SUVs, I mean honestly they are taking up a parking spot and a half here! God who need cars that big, beside people who actually use them as a part of their job.

I love the USA, because it's the most inexpensive place to fly aircrafts. Mainly because we fund our Air Traffic System and entire Aerospace structure with taxes. They actually talked about having it fund the same way you fund other things like $15 to get IFR clearance, $10 to land $20 to take off etc. Thankfully that was defeated in Congress.

I also like the fact that I can build a house out in the country. I am not a city person and I never will be, I need peace and quiet when I go home.

Finally, I just like the freedom that we have. :)

Some reasons why I like America:

Diversity of Ideals, Goals, Dreams and even lifestyles.

Everything is big! bathrooms, trucks, hallways, camping sites. We have plenty of elbow room here. opposite here. after all, an Island is pretty limiting.
Diversity! No really, If you think that Americans are some kind of hegemonic xenophobic isolationists, I invite you to drive from one side of Atlanta Georgia to the other and count how many different languages you see on building facades and here, spoken.

A steak that big in Paris or London would cost twice as much and be half the size. And people in Japan pay out of their noses for fresh fruit from California. I love America because I love good cheap food! well, not that cheap here. due to the fact that most of the stuff is imported. but the selections of food...

Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese (various), Japanese, Okinawan, Philipino, Hawaiian, Mexican, etc...

Guns! and the right to use them. I own multiple guns, I am very proud of them, and by golly if you break into my apartment I will shoot you and then call the police.don't own any guns. (swords and knives are different story :p) but I'll support your right to own em.
Beautiful Landscape! I know there are many beautiful places all around the world, but there are a fare amount of natural wonders in America! Yes, I love the countryside and freedom! I built a 20 ft trebuchet in the parking lot of my apartment and the police were absolutely cool with it. The landlord loves watching us launch rocks into the woods 400 yrds away. I can't imagine anywhere in Europe where a college student could do that with dealing with some serious red tape.

Yeah, trust me, Georgia's not all that great. I was born there and I never want to go back.

But there are plenty of other climates. Colorado has a great climate, and while it also has its portion of rednecked fools, it doesn't have anywhere near as many AND they're all spread out. Vacation in Glenwood Springs. Lovely place. Absolutely lovely.

Very good observations so far. :)

I've had the opportunity to see basically every inch of this country while driving a truck, and it really is God's Country, to use the phrase. Many truckers come from the UK, Europe and Central/South America to earn a living in the U.S., and most that I met had good things to say about the country and its hospitality, even if most of them were homesick for family, which is natural.

Because around here they're driven by soccer moms who have no problems almost driving you off the Interstate when she's trying to change lanes, but God forbid she goes the speed limits on a highway. She usually goes 10 below around here which pisses me off.

Everything is big because Americans are ridiculously overweight; the diversity is chill, I agree; American steaks are huge and cheap because your meat is factory-farmed in circumstances where the animal leads a disgusting miserable and vile existence culminating with your plate, whereas in Europe responsible policies have been implemented supporting small family-owned farms, thereby giving much-needed money to rural populations, preserving their culture and heritage, as well as avoiding the morally reprehensible concept of factory-farming; Americans value their 'freedom' soooo much, and equate it with their guns, and yet do nothing to stop the steady curtailing of all their rights and freedom taking place under current and past administrations under the guise of counter-terrorism, which is sickening; and America's beautiful landscapes are wasted on a populace intent on covering every available surface with cookie-cutter suburban houses, garbage dumps and 16-lane highways.

Thank you and goodnight.

True, though it's still surprising. It's really nothing against Sweden. I'm just as surprised to find Indians living in France outside of Paris, or in other parts of Europe.
Certain regions make sense. I mean we're spread out all over the US, there are a ton of us in the UK, and both of those make sense to some extent, the UK because of the fact that India was under Britain's thumb for a long time, and the US because it's the "land of opportunities."
There used to be a lot of Indians in Kenya too, back when it was still heavily influenced by England. Still, I'd be surprised to find Indians in other parts of Africa, or in South America.

Obviously, you haven't spent much time in New Hampshire. Did you know that's where the first game of paintball was played (back in 1981)? There's auto racing, skiing/snowboarding, camping, amusement parks, etc.

Yes, heritage and history. A heritage full of racism, bigotry, and slavery, and a history of oppression.

Whatever sentiments you may associate with the Stars and Bars, lad, to the rest of us it's not seen in a kind light.

It's funny you say that with regards to Georgia, as Atlanta has been for quite a while "The city too busy to hate," and Georgia Tech, where I go to school, has the largest African American engineering enrollment in the United States and was one of the first public universities to voluntarilly integrate. Indeed, Georgia was a part of the solution to America's race problems back when Martin Luther King was marching through DC and LBJ, a texan, was bridging the legal gaps between whites and blacks. There's a lot of history here in Atlanta, and just because somebody else sees something very different in a flag then you do does not mean they are bigoted or racist. Oh, and just to tell you, of Georgia's 9 million people, more then 6 million live right here in Atlanta, so you could say the city slickers are a majority.

And anyways, what place isn't full of racism and oppresion? Heck, with California's mass-slaughter of Chinese workers that the business no longer wanted to pay ("Going to hell in a hambasket"), maybe we should consider the California state flag a symbol of racism as well. After all, it was the state government of California that sanctioned and supported both actions, by reducing the penalty for killing a Chinese man to a small fine that could easilly be less then you were paying them, and not actively investigating immigrant deaths.

Let me make one thing clear: I am not attempting to state that the Confederate States was the only government to ever commit vile acts. That said, the acts of one does not somehow excuse the other, and saying "They did it too!" just makes your argument look pathetic.

Furthermore, California did not drag the U.S. into a four year long bloody war.

That stuff put aside, ALL governments responsible for this sort of thing ought to stand up and accept their history for what it is, and then move on. Rather than continuing to flaunt and claim that it "wasn't that bad" we should accept the truth and make the world a better place.

America isn't so great. The conservatism on race and gender issues (stuff it is no longer cool to be intolerant about) has transferred itself to less harmful things, like underage drinking. Hypocritical cops arrest kids for drinking while they were "in that exact spot, 20 years earlier, drinking with those kids' parents."

Americans economize their time far too much. This is, of course, a result of the higher wage rate paid to Americans, since a sacrifice of time for leisure in America incurs a higher implied cost in terms of wages lost than in another country, but that doesn't make it suck any less when I hear of Spaniards going to discotécas until four in the morning nearly every day on weekends.

America, at least the section I am so unfortunate to inhabit, is full of provincial, uncouth rednecks who seem to practically orgasm over their right to own a gun. If I had a nickel for every time I'd gotten into a fight with one of these brutes because he failed to adequately understand what I was communicating to him, I'd have about 30 cents.

American humor is not nearly as funny as British humor. Only the basest of jokes make it into the mainstream because they must be reduced to the least common denominator so as to interest the maximum amount of viewers, and thus draw the maximum amount of advertising dollars. Irony, understatement, and self-depracation have little place next to Larry the Cable Guy.

Jesus Christ, let's finish it with the SUVs already. If I had a nickel for every time I saw some liposuctioned, face-lifted soccer mom driving a Ford Explorer around with a smug look of entitlement on her face, and no one else in the car, I'd have significantly more than 30 cents.

All told, I'd rather be British. Or Spanish. Nothing else though, since I'd be somewhat unable to communicate. In absence of direct experience, I probably idealize these countries, but a glorified ideal is better than a grim present, eh?

I love this country, but we are being led into the ground by a group of fanatical nutjobs who are more concerned with exploiting the global economy and keeping the people docile.

I have a hard time living in a country:
Where a major political party can't figure out if waterboarding is torture
Where the only opposition to that party can't figure out what a spine is.
That turned their back on the world, even after they showed us sympathy
Where people still get kill eachother to get out of the ghetto
Where cancer patients get no medical care
Etc...

But, America is the most diverse, friendly, funny, beautiful, and coolest place I know in the world.

The Nazi party didn't rise to power in a healthy cultural environment, they rose to power in a nation that got royally stomped in WWI.
And they're enjoying quite the resurgence in the youth of TODAY'S Germany, who are sick and tired of a national identity of guilt for something their grandparents did..
Kinda funny , how we sit and blithely watch history repeat itself and glorify guilt despite the long term consequences....

All told, I'd rather be British. Or Spanish. Nothing else though, since I'd be somewhat unable to communicate. In absence of direct experience, I probably idealize these countries, but a glorified ideal is better than a grim present, eh?

No, actually a glorified ideal is just how the lazy opt out of having to think....

Yeah, I've never understood that whole 'be ashamed for generation and generations unto the 7th generation" crap..
I think it's the guilty born-again mindset,lol.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

It's not about endless self-flagellation for the wrongs of one's ancestors, it's about realizing that your own heritage is probably not perfect. It's about realizing that pretty much every culture and country has some icky mistakes in its past.

Being aware of past mistakes doesn't mean you have to let yourself be consumed with guilt over them.

The worst thing about a national culture of 'feel ashamed' is the backlash..
The Nazi party didn't rise to power in a healthy cultural environment, they rose to power in a nation that got royally stomped in WWI.

And a large part of the problem was that people were frantically looking for a scapegoat so they wouldn't have to face the mistakes that their own people had made.

And they're enjoying quite the resurgence in the youth of TODAY'S Germany, who are sick and tired of a national identity of guilt for something their grandparents did..
Kinda funny , how we sit and blithely watch history repeat itself and glorify guilt despite the long term consequences....
What's this "we" stuff?

I believe in teaching history accurately. Germany did some deeply fucked up shit, and I hope NOBODY ever forgets about it. Badgering modern German kids and telling them they're awful people because the Holocaust happened is pointless, and it certainly doesn't represent good education. But allowing them to brush it off, minimize it, or blame it on others doesn't really help either.

Oh please, I have never met a "cultured" person who just wanted to sit back and crack open a cold one with the guys.
maybe because 'the guys' want to talk about nothing more than really banal dribble that holds little or no interest to the 'cultured' person.
I'm hardly a 'cultured' person, but the idea of sitting round, drinking US beer and waffling 'bout cars, football and girls* does not interest me in the slightest.
Guess that makes me pretentious.

(*if on the other hand it was Grolsch and the topics were OC paddling, travel, books, film and/or food then I'd only be too happy to)

I may have grew up as what is commonly reffered to as a "hick" here with all the connotations it implies including the large fourwheel drives (still have a diesel 2500 and a rock Jeep)

But even I was taught to never ever EVER drive or operate a firearm while drunk

There is a safe limit. Kind of like .07 BAC for driving. As long as your not too drunk.

Oh, sure, they're friendly, unless you're not white. Or not Christian. Or not heterosexual. Or not anything that's not just like them.

Stereotype much?

It's truly heart-warming to see some appreciation of America out there. Admittedly, I prefer Classical Music and Chinese culture, but America is my homeland, and not even a Chinese democracy could change that.

Stereotype much?

Of course. Why focus on the good people when you can just bitch and moan about the bad ones? After all, everybody knows that in order to be happy, EVERYONE must like you.

Some reasons why I like America:

Everything is big! bathrooms, trucks, hallways, camping sites. We have plenty of elbow room here.Nutella jars are 13 grams smaller than the smallest European ones.
Diversity! No really, If you think that Americans are some kind of hegemonic xenophobic isolationists, I invite you to drive from one side of Atlanta Georgia to the other and count how many different languages you see on building facadesProbably still less than you can find people wanting to make English the official language
I love America because I love good cheap food!Food is usually cheaper in areas with plenty of space to grow it. Not a bad thing, though.
Guns! and the right to use them. I own multiple guns, I am very proud of them, and by golly if you break into my apartment I will shoot you and then call the police.Yay. Going out puts you in danger of an angry, gun-totin' dad not keen on how you're handling his daughter...
Beautiful Landscape! I know there are many beautiful places all around the world, but there are a fare amount of natural wonders in America! I've been to Alaska, Yellowstone and I've hiked the Appalachian trail. I love nature and America has plenty of it.Unfortunately, there's little effort to prevent it from being depleted :(

Country music! I like American Country Music!I hate it, and so does the rest of the American side of my family.

This one, on the other hand, is still valid:

Things I liked about America:

Very little smoking. You could actually come home from a party not smelling like ash tray.
Shopping! I could buy food whenever I was hungry.

Ah, yes, the beautiful American landscape.
