Why are you trying to divide America? This is One Nation Under God, with no difference at all. Every place is the best because America is the best.

I say the Northwest. I live in the Northeast and we have it all: beautiful girls, minimal fat people, money (in certain areas), and good weather (most of the time). However, we have our group of idiots. We call them "Red Sox fans".

Aside from that, Mitt Romney, when he was governor of my state (Massachusetts), he made the state FUBAR - something that not even Jane Swift could achieve.

Been to all the regions in the great nation of the United States of America. Will have to go with the Northwest just because I love the outdoors and it seems to have it all. I also live near Seattle. Some other parts I think are nice are the Southwest around the Grand Canyon, South Utah and parts of New Mexico around Santa Fe. Also liked parts of the South with New Orleans and Savannah topping the list.

Under what criterion? Climate? Local culture? Economy? Beliefs of the people who live there? Openness to outsiders?

Me, I like Colorado the best of the various states I've been to(and I've been to a lot of them) but that's personal like, and mainly due to the climate. Sadly, no matter where I go I never seem to be truly accepted for who I am. :(

How is the Midwest not in this poll? It would win because:

1 - The only place in the US where residents can experience the entire gamut of real weather.

2 - Highest percentage of people who are non-fake, yet nice, and even honest. Some are sane, too.

3 - Class/race/income divide less blatant than on the coasts.

4 - Best education, good to raise kids

5 - low cost of living, affordable housing

6 - Fresh air, at least within driving distance

7 - Rural areas not too hick-like; with good Mexican food too thanks to an influx of illegal immigrant agricultural workers

That said, there are some downsides to the Midwest, like inner cities in decline (except for Chicago and the Twin Cities) and little in the way of unspoiled nature.

It's all about the northeast. Beautiful scenery, plenty to see and do, perfect weather that balances being nice most of the time while still not depriving you entirely of some really good storms here and there. I also love the southwest almost as much, but the tie-breaker has to be that aside from a few exceptions most of the northeast is less stressful to live in.
Although of course I'm gonna be biased in favor of both of those places... I've spent most of my life between Ohio, California, and New Hampshire =P
The Northwest also looks/sounds amazing, but I've never been there. Although Washington and Alaska are at the top of my list of states to visit because damned if they don't look like the most beautiful places in the country.

I hareby eliminate the entire state of Ohio from contention. Let me count the ways.

Terribly hot summers, terribly cold winters, more ice than snow, and the city fucks around with it. At least they do here in Columbus.
There's no such thing as fall, and there's barely a such thing as spring.
The average person can't afford to live in a neighborhood that doesn't have people breaking into cars.
The seasons are: Almost Winter, Winter, Still Winter, Road Construction, and Damn It's Hot!
The most harebrained responses to problems such as drunken driving and sex offense - making peopel drive around with a different license plate if they're convicted of a DUI? Harding H. Taft, that idea is lame.
Check the origin of a potential harebrained state law. Odds are it's from Ohio.
The capital city likes to think it's a big city that can act like a big city, but in reality, it's an insignificant, piddling nothing that gets laughed at by everyone else.
Athens is the one bright spot, and unfortunately, it's in a dirt-poor area funded almost entirely by college students and alcohol, and it turns into a ghost town the first week of June. Trust me. There are few places livelier than a college town of Athens' caliber during the school year. There are even fewer things more eerie and depressing than such a town when all the students go home. How I met my wife over the summer at college is a miracle I've yet to explain.

In the meantime, I nominate the two non-contiguous U.S. states.

I would but then it's true from my POV that the best place to live in the US is north of the border.

Barring that, New England has what seems the closest to what I like.

I must admit, I don't think there is one region that's better. Some I'd feel more comfortable in, due to climatic, political, and demographic reasons, but that doesn't necessarily make them better, just more suitable to my needs and desires. The East Coast and larger cities are probably the best fit for me, and so might the West Coast, but I haven't been there, so I wouldn't know for sure.

In the meantime, I nominate the two non-contiguous U.S. states.

It's quite a British thing to decry your local towns as being more than a bit crap. It got to the point where an actress declared upon receiving an award at a British ceremony "Who would have thought, a little girl from North London...". NORTH LONDON?? If she'd said, "Who would have thought, a little girl from the Outer Hebrides" or "Who would have thought, a little girl raised by wolves..." I might have gone along with it. But a couple of miles away from the place you're receiving your award? Really?

Anyway, I've digressed quite spectacularly. The point is this: in Britain you can write down pretty much any town you like and use it as shorthand for somewhere dull and depressing and terribly unglamorous. Americans are a lot more positive and much prouder of where they're from and so I struggled for a while trying to find a US equivalent. It turns out Ohio works really well.

I have traveled all over the country, and San Fransisco is my favorite place within it. California is it's whole own world, but in general, north over south.

I just hate everything "Southern". I hate rednecks, I hate confederate flags, I hate the Bible belt, I hate all that shit. Big cities on the coast are generally nice places. My favorite parts of America are

1. SF
2. NYC
3. The Tampa Bay Area (where I live).

I wouldn't mind living in Washington (I've got relatives there), but I don't want to be anywhere in that state on the chance that MSH blows again.

I do quite like the Midwest, being a Midwesterner born and bred, but I admit to a preference for the less urban areas of New England. I lived in the Berkshire mountains for a while, and there's rarely a day that goes by that I don't miss them. I quite honestly used to start nearly every morning by stepping out my front door, inhaling the marvelously crisp and clean air, looking down the road at the gentle, tree-covered curves of the beautiful old hills shimmering in the morning mist and saying, "Holy CRAP, is that gorgeous! I am so lucky to live here!"

...and then I'd go get an apple cider doughnut. (Well, not most mornings, admittedly - but I would have if I could!) :)

I will say Florida, While I love snow, a White Christmas, if you think about it , it snows in every USA state except Florida and Hawaii and also cold, actually I have heard say it snows in the high mountains of Hawaii, a state I would love to visit one day soon.

In California it snows in the mountains, also the California earth quakes, I used to live in California, Chicago Illinoiss, Indianapolis Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Currently in Florida again.

It gets cold in Florida for brief periods of time and officially and unofficially it has snowed in Florida especially in the North part by the Georgia border, but nothing you can compare and call snow like up North.

Yes Florida has Hurricanes.

they aren't really redefined. the midwest is in the north, and just left unmentioned. sorta like how the east coast refers to the northern east coast. the south is its own cultural region and has been for centuries. and it's midwest, because it is neither the west coast nor the mountains, nor the vast empty dry expanse of the great plains. the naming is a matter of historic settlement patterns, climate, culture, and awesomeness.

Well, the key is that the name "Midwest" has been around for a long time. Keep in mind the way the U.S. grew, and it starts making more sense. :)

(Also, in re: Missouri being on the eastern side of the country - in the U.S., west and east are most frequently determined based on your position relative to the Mississippi River, which comes reasonable close to bisecting the country. The Mississippi runs down the eastern border of Missouri, thus rendering Missouri the "Gateway to the West.")
