I don't know if there has been a thread like this but anyway.

I've you had the ability of changing one thing in your country's history the past 200 years, what would it be?

I personnaly would have made Denmark keep the Virgin Isles know in the hand of the US :D

It's a corollary of the if you could go back and give yourself advice (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=543368) thread.

And the answer is just the same: don't mess with time.

Even thinking about doing so messes with your own head, actually doing it would fuck everything. Forever.

Oh, well. I would have made friends with Bill Gates, and shown him a real computer, running Unix.

I would've essentially made us go for the Swedish economic model. And pushed harder for that proposed union with France. That would've been AWESOME.:D

Go back to the last election in 2006 and rig it so the NDP would get 1-seat shy a majority, with the Bloc as the opposition. And if I had time, photo shop a picture of Harper to put him in a compromising position with another man... then publish it in all the papers, along with another picture with the caption that says "Harper Eats Babies".

Ah, bugger it. Just give Madison a book by Hayek, and shoot a couple of the other founders.

You could at least have said something like "we defeat the entire Wehrmacht in 1940, saving the whole of Europe and Africa" :p

Myself, I'd say "we have that union with France." That could have been so good :(

Extermination of the bison.

Eh they were going to get killed off sooner or later. They were dumb stupid animals. Kinda like the deers of today who runs out in front of cars, or the do-do birds.

No, they aren't extinct, but they are fragment of their former numbers. 60 million down to what, less than 1000? And now their a few thousand?

That's a far cry even to 1 million.

anyways, edited the original post.

I'd like to go back to the beginning of the 20th century, shortly after the rebirth of the Olympic Games in Greece(1896) and arrange for naked athletic competition to become the norm.

Tell me you wouldn't be fascinated by naked ski jumpers and I'll call you a liar. :p

The American Bison, while not nearly what they were in the 19th century, have made a massive comeback, and now number over one million.

Really? I didn't think they were at a million. Anyways, that's great news! :)

Indeed it is. Evidently, Buffalo just don't want to die.

And that's a good thing, because bison meat is great.

While I am not typically a Labour Party fan, given how events transpired after the election I am about to refer to, I would have been willing to cope with an extra term of Labour.

I would have ensured that the "Citizens for Rowling" campaign had never occurred; as a move, it almost certainly backfired on him and it did not help the Third Labour Government's re-election chances, considering that National already had a massive bribe in terms of NZ Super. Hopefully, Labour would have won the 1975 election and Muldoon would have been outed by a backdoor coup to enable National to win in 1978 (quite possibly Brian Talboys may have been involved in such a hypothetical move).

Without Muldoon, there would have been no Think Big, and no Fortress New Zealand mentality - two actions that almost certainly caused the near bankruptcy of New Zealand and resulted in the Rogernomics reforms being more rapid than they otherwise might have been. This would naturally have not caused them to be so controversial and thus would have ultimately resulted in a more right-wing New Zealand today.

[Shudder]. There are so many frightening things in that scenario, I don't even know where to begin.

Why? Because then we would have health care properly funded, with education given priority? Because we would see an actual green policy put in place to help prevent climate change? That we wouldn't be stuck in a war that is a drain on our resources? Because we wouldn't kiss America's ass any more? What's the problem with it? Oh sure, it's socialist and there's a group of separatists in t but if you get the latter involved, they will feel like they are part of the solution.
