The Joys of Technology...

Why is it that computers and other such technology find the need to fail just as you need them??

I have two papers due, one today and one tomorrow both are done...well they were till my computer saw fit to kill its self last night while I slept and lose all of my documents.
The sweet joy if this is that I had just made a back up..they day before I wrote both papers, so I don't have them on my back up..the two things that I need. :headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang:

So this is a thread to share your stories of computer bliss:(

This was back in the days of coax cable and 386's.

I was employed by a college to assist in the maintenance of their computer pool, 120 386 machines in a serial array. They were very proud of it.

The day before end of year exams started, the system went down. ONE cable had failed, and the system couldn't talk to half of itself.

So, guess who had to crawl around behind the desks, testing every cable until we found the one that had failed..? and who had only four hours in which to do it..?

Just how exactly do you have time to create threads on NSG when you need to re-write two papers till tomorrow?

My internet browsers have conveniently taken to just randomly closing down whenever they feel like it, which is, more often than not, exactly a point in time when I had just discovered some important stuff/site and hadn't saved it yet.

Unrelated to that, my internet connection itself likes to crap out on a regular basis, too, and it took me a couple of irrevocably lost posts to remember to always CTRL+C longer pieces of text input for websites before submitting it, lest my connection went down just as the new entry loads and subsequently gets whisked away into Net Oblivion.

Technology is made by flawed humans following the orders of even more flawed humans. It's hardly surprising that it comes out with flaws.

Had a fun time trying to print an essay at UVA while I was still there. I missed the deadline to hand it in because the printers in the library (in Clark Hall) failed me. So I rush to the Alderman Library down the road. The printers failed me there too.

18 straight hours of video editing once simply vanished for me once in college. I think my reaction to it is why some of the people I graduated with never talked to me afterward...

my current computer woe is that my CD/DVD drive doesn't like CDs or DVDs any more. i put one in and my system freezes up. i don't know if its a hardware or software problem... just started doing it one day.

it was a real pain in the ass when i needed to use this computer for presentations at a conference just now, and speakers kept turning up with their powerpoint files on CD... grr...

My computer bluescreened for like three days and I had to transfer everything to a different harddrive and then put the new hardrive in. Luckily I had another computer to help. I could have just replaced it with a blank hardrive 1,2,3 but then I'd lose all my files.

Oh my god. Is that actually real?

If it is, that's the best. That's the best fucking mental image I've had in months.

My biggest problem currently is that all that malware from porn sites has somehow choked my Internet Explorer so that it doesn't work, and the only way to fix it, as far as I can see, is to format my drive and reinstall Windows. That's too much work, and I wouldn't have enough room on my other hard drive or on disks to back my stuff up anyway. This thing wouldn't normally be a problem, but for some inconceivable reason I can't access my campus' p2p network with Firefox; I'd need IE.

Another thing is that Windows (not just my copy, but every Windows since 98) sometimes randomly decides that my floppy disks are not formatted. I still use them to back up small documents, or to take them to my school computers for printing, and it's really unnerving to get "disk not formatted" half an hour before my paper is due, when it'll take twenty minutes to go back home to get a working disk and come back. I guess that sometime around '98, the good people at Microsoft figured that since everybody is already using CDs, nobody will notice if they let Gates' two-year-old daughter program the floppy reading thingy.
