In Court...

You're called to court to provide testimony, it could be for the Crown Prosecution or the Defence, it doesn't matter because you're there as a witness. As a witness, your position is to provide the court with accurate testimony, free of lies.

When you're called to the stand, you're asked to swear on the Bible. Do you accept this or ask for another book to swear upon and why?

At least Ruffy is honest about committing perjury. :)

Dang, I missed the decline to swear on any book. That, some book that I like, or Bottle would all be good.

Damnit... I should have included that. Ok... pretend option 9 is that! :)

I choose not to swear on anything, I read the affirmation instead of the oath.

I knew it! We haven't even left the first page and someone already abused the poll options! :D

Since you don't have to swear to God or on the Bible in the US, I'd have to say this totally doesn't apply or matter.

Honour never seems to count for much nowadays, it's unfortunate. Someone needs to bring back Bushidō. I mean it's a good code. Rectitude, Courage, Benevolence, Respect, Honesty, Honour and Loyalty isn't really asking for much. Although I'm sure people today wouldn't be particularly happy about the method of regaining honour if you lose it.

If you wanted me to vote for one then I wouldn't have an answer, the only correct answer is all of them. It wasn't abusing but instead using them correctly.

But you see, that requires work and many people like to take the shortest route between point A and point B, only stopping to smell the flowers if the flower is handed to them.

Using them correctly doesn't mean checking off all of the options, my friend. :) You're a poll abuser.

I said would you or would you decline all together? Sure the OP is badly worded. My fault for posting before my cup of coffee.

I've been a witness in court four times, twice in a military court, and twice in civilian civil court. I was sworn in all four times. I was never asked to swear on a bible or any other book. I only raised my hand and took the oath.

I would (and have, actually) affirmed the truth of my statements upon my sacred honour. I believe it is generally accepted most places.

Why would i swear on a book that specifically tells me not to swear on anything, but instead to "let your yes be yes, and your no be no"? That's the reason why i decided not to swear on the bible. Of course, now that i have come to my senses, swearing on the bible has the same meaning to me as swearing on Hans Christian Andersen...

I'll assume this doesn't take place in either the US, where I'd use the constitution, or Germany, where using books during the occasional oath-taking of witnesses doesn't happen.

I would refuse to swear on the bible based on the fact that it has no meaning to me

When traveling abroad, it is best to observe local custom-so whatever they wanted an oath on would be fine by me. Too many people are so easily offended by non-essentials, it's all moot. Swear on the Necronomicon, if you want some divine reprisals for perjury.

Instead of swearing on a book, perhaps we should go back to the old Roman system. It would work for at least half the population, and I bet my balls it would definitely reduce the amount of perjury commited.

Nope, I'm the one with the badly worded post.:)

It was more a question of court procedure (not having been in court I wouldn't know) than anything else. I wanted to know whether you have to have some physical object to swear on, or whether you can just, you know, swear without something.

Actually, I'd swear on the constitution or something. But not the bible. Or the Koran. Or really any Abrahamic text.
